The modernized version of these frigates actually sound a lot more capable than I would have expected. Canada would probably do well to invest more in its navy generally- lot of coastlines

These have been pretty good AWS ships through out its history but the Type 26 will be a major upgrade that is long overdue. I still feel that we should have been looking to get some Arleigh Burkes.

The US doesn’t have the capacity to build them as fast as is required…and Canadians shipyards are in snooze mode and there are few that could even conceivable build a Burke. Those Type 26s, will be old tech in many ways when they start to be built…and they will not be built as rapidly as the Halifax class was. It’s going to cost a fortune to have the shipyards set up to build them in Canada…again, procurement failure is expected. Naw, the RCN should be subcontracting the PLAN to do its job. Thanks to the PMs, MNDs, DND, and NDHQ…for just enough money to plant flowers on the grave of the RCN, RCAF, and Canadian Army.

@@TheAndyLaz-You again. The RCN is not developing weapons of the future. The ARC in Dartmouth has a very limited budget. These ships will be built over a long period, and the tech that goes into them will have to be decided upon at a specific date and time. The first five will likely be built with one standard of specific technologies, the second five with newer technologies, etc. However, a fundamental change has already occurred that these ships cannot escape. Building these ships implies a 20th-century mindset. Drone subs, AI mines, swarms of drones in the air...these ships need a support fleet of glass mine hunters and a load of unavailable AAW defence systems. This will not happen. A determined enemy could sink these ships in port, not to mention in a firefight. Realistically, AI drone subs, AI torpedoes, and "mines that move and wait for specific targets" are the bigger threats. These ideas have existed for decades, and with AI, they will exist in the 2030s. Russia already claims to have a similar system in use (the Poseidon), real or not; whatever it is, it is clear that the threat is imminent. The "proposed" ships will be obsolete in the 2030s-that is to be expected! The bigger problem is that the whole concept of replacing the CPFs with newer surface combatants is obsolete. Canada should be using 21st-century tactics and technology. The money should go into subs, drones, and AI. Fisheries and Oceans and the CCG should do non-violent law enforcement. The RCN should be ready to provide credible deterrence and killer capability. It should only focus on Canadian waters unless DND's budget goes way up. Although I do not work on the CSC program, that doesn't mean I don't have information about it. I'm not talking about what is online, either. So, chortle away, I couldn't care less. DND's procurement strategies haven't kept up with reality or been forward-looking for decades. The Canadian government is fat, dumb, and reactionary. The next war will be "come as you are." If you think for a moment that the RCN will be in a good starting position, I'll be the one chortling. There are too many arrogant frigiidiots in NATO countries.

@@doogleticker5183 As bad as the current DND procurement bunch is, it's a good thing you're not in charge. Although you have some valid points, most of your conclusions are off-the-mark. Reading a few headlines does not make you a Naval Warfare Strategist. Lots of armchair Admirals on here that never spent a day at sea and don't have a clue. By the way, the state of military resources and support says much more about the Canadian public than any particular government.

@@TheAndyLaz - Well, I may be off the mark. I retired from the RCN after service beginning in the Cold War and until a few years after the First Gulf War. So, thirty years out in a second career. When I left the mob, I was only a Commanding Officer of a ship off Canada's east coast. Our ship's were very light green, not gray. It had been less than ten years since we got our blues back. The CPFs had not yet arrived, so we had 280s and steamers derived from the St. Laurent class of DDs. I lack the qualifications to be an "armchair Admiral!" My military occupation code (MOC) was "71." Are you a qualified armchair Admiral? PS - The RCN rarely has an Admiral. They have a Vice-Admiral, unless the CDS is from the RCN...a post rotating through the three branches of the CAF.

Actually, during our research phase, we found some problems. We especially think these ships experienced too many fires. But to keep our video short and sweet, we skipped them.

I thought they were under gunned and could have been better equipped with SAMs with only 16 missiles, but maybe they do the job fine for the RCN

its a good way to prevent them being pushed into doing roles they werent designed for. With such a low missile load they wont be expected to fill in for dedicated Air Defense Assets, instead those missiles will be dedicated to its own self defense.

Thoughts of the new Type 26 Frigate? I find them clearly capable warships but with too many duties and expectations in order to be able to "do everything". I feel having several less Type 26s but making it up with more numerous lighter frigates or escort type corvettes would have been a better idea...

Absolute. At over 3B + a shot?... for one Frigate is insanity. The RCN could build with the funds saved a fleet consisting of: 16 Type 31s @ $500,000 each. 06 Type 26. 08 SSK. 10 OPVs. 04 AOR,... 2 BERLIN/ 2 'Hardened' ASTRIX. -------- *Militarize the Canadian Coast Guard, similar to the USCG, and assign them all the 'Popsicle Class' Harry De Wolf Arctic Patrol Vessels.

By far the most successfull warship building program in canada. But they only built 12. Looking back they should have built 20 but with thicker steel for hull and sides. Like 3 inch minimum.

The Canadian Type 26 was designed to be longer then the U.K version so it can house more crew, from what i've read every ship will have a command room so that extra crew could be for the fleet command crew when acting as a flag ship.

The military doesn't always stick to the budget as was demonstrated by the death of the Arrow program, the Navy looks like it's doing the same thing with the csc like a kid in a toy store overreaching, we need a standing bilateral defense appropriations committee with educated members from all branches of the military and industry who will spend and prioritize responsibly but give the soldiers, sailors and aircrews the kit they require in a timely manner, And yes the military spending needs to increase to 2.5%

Our navy most neglected branch of service. These twelve frigates are too old & heavily overworked. Meanwhile our littoral fleet is a HUGE joke. 22 vessels. Only four of them have single mount 25 mil pop gun. The rest? A handful of WW2 era machineguns in circa 1940 pedastal mounts. Just superb for frigid arctic conditions !!

The Navy's ice breakers were never intended to be combat ships, they are to assert Canada's claim of the north west passage, the U.S is trying to get the U.N to claim that the north west passage is international waters. Harper at the time asserted Canada's claim then ordered these ships to maintain a navel presence in the region. The only time they will leave Canada's waters is on anti piracy missions.

These are the RCN’s only class of warship. Twelve of these CPFs, of which a third of which are operationally available in peace-time at any one time, is…well, indicative of almost six decades worth of decline. All other hulls are not fit to fight anything but slow small boats in coastal waters….and even these little ships are not available in quantity. Some are completely unarmed. All are lacking in sensors…even the new “large” AOPS are toothless and not fit for much of anything do do with combat. Calling them “Arctic” patrol ships is hilarious. The are the lowest class of icebreaker that can be called an icebreaker…they are summer Arctic ships with a pea shooter (25mm bushmaster) and a helo deck for the radically unreliable Sikorsky Cyclones… Canadian military personnel deserve better as does the citizens of Canada. It seems that the Canadian federal government is grossly mismanaged, especially the Department of National Defense’s procurement process. Billions of dollars have been pissed away from a very tight budget that is not even close to Canada’s NATO “recommended” commitment of 2% of GDP. This is not news…over a half century of neglect is what it is. If anybody ever wants to stop the RCN, all they’d have to do is declare that the approaches to Halifax and Esquimalt harbours have been mined with AI equipped mines, waiting for specific targets. The RCN would be paralyzed. It’s pretty safe to say the RCN personnel go to work every day in cemeteries ashore, or for the hulls with crews assigned to them, to coffins. The RCNs funeral happened a long time ago. 😮

It should be law that Canada budgets 2% GDP to defence and let the military divide the cash up to the three branches. They know what they need let them purchase the equipment. Too much Government interference and politics in the military. Let the Best qualified have the job and stop the men not need to apply approach to getting your desired stats. Most qualified approach will stoke confidence in the ranks. Oh and special missions need to come from another Government budget not the 2% GDP for the military.

Military procurement has always been 'political' and you can bet that this will continue. In addition, all military in Canada use the 'starving man' approach when in the design stage, slowly shedding 'wants' for 'needs'. Feeding time only comes once every two decades or so and if a change of government occurs before the order is filled...well ....all bets are off. That is exactly how we ended up with too few helicopters(Cormorants) and a frigate which could not carry them(far too heavy) back in the 1980's. The Halifax Class is still a Canadian success story. India and Australia don't operate any of Canada's old aircraft carriers, they were scrapped after the Cold War ended, India operates an old Soviet Carrier I believe and Australia operates two Amphibious Assault Ships built by Spain in the 2010s. The UK's Prince of Wales has had all of its problems worked out and is currently undergoing sea trials and South Korea opted not to build an aircraft carrier due to their primary enemy, North Korea, only having the capability of operating near littoral waters in the sea of Korea. I'm Canadian and I like the Halifax Class Frigates, but spreading misinformation and nonsense claims about the naval forces of other country's is unhelpful and rude. The Halifax Class will be a bit long in the tooth by the 2030s so we desperately need to find a way to expedite the delivery of the first Type 26 CSC and improve sailor recruitment and retention numbers to ensure that the RCN has the personnel needed to man a 15 ship fleet.
