I am POSITIVE that Disney would not try to gamble such a lucrative franchise just to pander to a minority group. They wanted someone that was already famous/had a fanbase. Think of all the people that were between the ages of 21 and 18 when Halle got the role. Are any of those actresses coming close to Halle vocally? In this style? I never doubted that they picked her because she was the best person to audition and she easily embodies some of the biggest Ariel characteristics, an ethereal beauty, perfect voice, youth and bubbliness, innocent/soft demeaner with a fire underneath. Everyone wants a meritocracy until it takes away something that is believed to belong to white people. At that point, it can't be based on merit at all.

The nation erupted and suddenly woke Hollywood as many call it has a tendency to increase the amount of people of color that they feature in once white dominated spaces. I wasn’t necessarily skeptical, however I understand why people would believe Hollywood intends to intensify negative racial relations with their content for political purposes. They have done so historically by placing black people in subservient roles and there are powerful people in the industry. It would be naive to think these creators do not always have influence however they want.

Further, the reason that people of color had been underrepresented in media is due to racist ideas of beauty, competence, and commercial viability. What you should have been skeptical of is the disproportionate amount of white people in leading roles, often for characters or figures who were not white, and the erasure of the full spectrum of human variety in central, fully fleshed-out roles. The only reason you would be "skeptical" of castings like Halle's would be that you believe black people are not capable of truly earning such a role, which speaks to deep ignorance and racist presumptions.

She said second Live Action. Brandy was the first, Halle is the second. PATF doesn't have a live action yet. Until it's announced. I know there's rumors about it.

It's not that at all and I don't believe that's what she is saying. She's responding to the reaction videos of little kids who are black and brown seeing her and feeling happy. They saw themselves in her. It's just that simple, but adults make things so hard. From the beginning people (mainly adults) have made it about race and attacking her despite knowing (well those of us who knew she was) she was more than qualified based on her talent. They didn't give her a chance based off appearance alone. Now people are hearing her and you cannot deny that she was the right person for the role. All we were saying is with her talent it was cool to see someone that looked like us be able to play this role because it was type cast despite talent. Look to Beauty and the Beast for the latest example. Just like seeing Brandy in Cinderella with such a diverse cast as a child, it made us feel like we could be a princess or prince too. Representation is just that simple...from Supreme Court Justice, to Astronaut, to Educators, to Mermaids ...if you can see it, you can be it. All kids deserve that.
