Thank you so much for these videos! I picked up one of these at a ham fest this summer, sold as restored and working, i brought it home and plugged it in and it tripped the breaker so fast I didnt even know it happened. No sparks or smoke, I hope shes still ok. No hard feelings to the fella who sold it to me, but i would like to troubleshoot on my own.

Does it have a 3 prong plug?

I am looking forward to the videos about the heterodyne circuits. I would really like to learn about how all that operates.

Did you do the video on the ssb bfo modification?
@UpcomingJedi
@UpcomingJedi 6 месяцев назад
I dont see that he did anything special to the radio. He just peaked the IF coils. I made an external bfo and use a transistor tecsun R9012 with it to hear ssb. So it seens to me all he did to the bfo is reset its place to put out 455 khz when the dot shows 12 oclock, nothing more.

So, is this particular receiver considered a general class receiver ?
@MikesRadioRepairRestoration
Yes i would consider this a general coverage shortwave receiver.

I am still waiting for the SSB mod. I have watched the previous videos and haven't seen it.
@MikesRadioRepairRestoration
The video has yet to be made. It will be done at a later date.

Any recommendations or favorites for sourcing parts?
@MikesRadioRepairRestoration
The 64 dollar question is > What kind of parts? :)
@garyk4gda480
@garyk4gda480 Год назад
Thanks for the reply. In this instance (S-38C), I am replacing the rubber feet, dial chord, perhaps the speaker. I have a cap kit. But I also have several Zenith and Philco radios that I will be rehabilitating. My Ham club has a tube tester and tubes may be something that I may need in the future. So I am looking for parts sources that are like or close to OEM or components that are good. Just wondering if you know of reliable vendors that you have worked with/trust.
@MikesRadioRepairRestoration
@@garyk4gda480 Hey Gary, What is it you are looking for exactly? There are many different suppliers depending what you are looking for. Caps, resistors and tubes can all usually be replaced but they often wont look original. They are usually much better. Caps and resistors can be had at Mouser. I will be doing a video later on sourcing parts as there are so many places you must keep on file. Thats why i ask what part are you looking for as the answer will be different in each case. Mike, I gave up Facebook a bunch of years ago so, i can't join or interact, but I can go to your page in a "receive only" mode. Thanks...great info. I'm just getting started on the hallicrafters and the immediate repair is the power cord which i will be using your suggested modifications for safety (have that), the rubber feet (crystallized and brittle) and the dial cord (worn out and just snap under tension). I've looked for some suitable replacements for the feet at the local hardware stores and have purchased some "bumper stops" but don't really like that solution. Would really like something closer to original. I've ordered dial cord from Amazon because it was easy and functional. I'll recap this week and test the tubes. If any prove to be marginal I will replace them (I'll be looking for a tube source possibly). Thank you for your tuning demo, that should really help when I get there but I will need the signal generator and analog VM. I may borrow them from a friend for this project, but will look at your tool video for my own equipment for the other radios. Thanks again.
