Hallicrafters S 40B - Part 1 - Initial Inspection and Power up

First in a series. I tried a different video filetype to upload and it went 4:3 aspect on me. It was 16:9 when I uploaded it. GRRR! A nice S-40B General coverage Receiver I just acquired. We start out with a short introduction to the Hallicrafters shortwave radios and a quick teardown of an S-38 that I restored earlier. When I purchased this, it was described as working fine. After power up, I found that it isn't working. Part 1 turned out a bit longer than expected, so grab a cup of coffee!

Very cool and informative. Thank you. I just got my hands on a Hallicrafters s-77a and a recap kit. So, while this is a different radio, it was still relevant and educational as far as the different stages, heterodyning, general troubleshooting, etc. I'm a little overwhelmed but I'm optimistic.

Just watched part 1 of the S-40 restoration. Excellent presentation! I've watch many of yours, but this one is particularly interesting to me. I have a S-40A that's been sitting here for probably 10 years. I'm going to knock the dust off of it and see if I can tackle it. Your detailed diagnostics, will be extremely helpful. Thank you so much.

Just came across this video set and your channel. Excellent job explaining basic radio theory. I have been working on radios for some time, but have always been weak on theory and you do a great job explaining it. I have a radio like this that I did a basic fix up and it seems to work well, but I want to go over it more thoroughly to see if I can make it better. Subscribing now.

I would strongly suggest not wearing rings or watches when working on a live chassis. Accidental arc welding sometimes happens (don't ask me how I know!) Other than that, I really like your video. I have an S40B waiting its turn on the bench. Nice way to get an overview and saves me lots of time. John, K8NN

I have one S-40B also, I recapped / Re resistored it about 7 years ago and I use it 2 or 3 nights a week, its a good SWL radio now and it was a good one in the day of its youth as well. John A bellas KC2UVN

Where can I find more information on the BFO kit? I got the built in BFO to work pretty well but had to adjust the gimmick cap wire a bit away from the tube socket to keep it from overloading the receiver.

Resistors...that's what I suspect is wrong with my Jackson 112 condenser tester that's causing it to be way off on the highest range. You could also have built a Colpitts oscillator with an extra tube for the BFO.

Have you ever seen or worked on a Hallicrafters SX-42..??? I always wanted one....I have a SX-71 now...

The SX-42 is an awesome receiver! I never owned one, but would love to pick one up someday. You have to have the speaker that goes with it (the R-42), and they're hard to find. It was also unique in that it was one of the first bass- reflex speakers on the market and had HIFi sound. It also had a 600 ohm voice coil. You need a 600 ohm speaker for the output transformer in these receivers. Can't use an 8 ohm unless you replace the output transformer. This would not be for beginners to align. Top of the line for its day!!
