Halloween (1978) The Movies Within the Movie - Monster Madness

Every October, it's a tradition to watch the original John Carpenter's Halloween, but what about the horror movies the characters are watching in Halloween? It's a familiar trope, the movie within the movie, something to compliment what's actually happening in the film. It could be a tribute to the movies the director grew up, but could there be more of a reason why these movies are on the TV? Is there a reason why Carpenter chose The Thing (1951), Forbidden Planet, and Night of the Living Dead specifically, or, was it all at random? That's what I'm investigating today!

The scene where Tommy looks out the window and sees Michael carrying Annie into the house is my favorite scene. Fun fact: John Carpenter's favorite movie director is Howard Hawks who directed The Thing From Another World. His five favorite movies: Only Angels Have Wings (Howard Hawks, 1939) Rio Bravo (Howard Hawks, 1959) Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941) Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958) Blow-Up (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1966)

It's always a pleasure to get a glimpse into James' creative mind, particularly in how he links all of these snippets that 99.9% of people would just attribute as 'homages', as something much more intentional and thought provoking. Thanks again for providing so much entertainment during the month of October. I can't wait to see what he has in store for the yearly AVGN Halloween themed episode! It's going to be tough to top Jason and 'Old Macdonald had a f**n' FARM' from last year! Keep up the amazing work.

James, I think the "watch the skies" was more to show like, in movies they tell you to watch the skies but this is no movie and the terror is in your neighborhood, not in space but right here in your car, waiting in the darkness. Showing the older movies is a way to say this is real, we have horror movies in this world and this is no movie, this is real and terrifying.

There probably never was a TV horror show host called "Dr. Demenia", but on the radio, you had "Dr. Demento", who played novelty songs on his radio broadcasts. He was in the LA Market for years, with a four hour show on Sundays, and a national two hour show. It might not be that far fetched that John Carpenter thought of that, when coming up for the name of his fictional TV Horror Host.

I just like point out; the scene in 'Halloween II' with the nurse getting her head dunked in hot scalding water repeatedly was inspired (or a homage) from a similar death seen in the Italian horror movie 'Profondo Rosso' (Deep Red) directed by Dario Argento. And that death was just as brutal... and maybe even worse, the victim was still alive when the killer left her.
