want to hear something spooky? my wife literally just told me "you're in charge of figuring out what the heck we're doing for Halloween" seconds before this video appeared in my subscription. we are both at a loss as to what adults are supposed to do.

This year my husband and I bought our first house (yay!) and it's in a cute suburban neighborhood with a lot of kids (double yay!), so we've opted to stay in for the first time this Halloween so we can enjoy all the trick-or-treaters coming to our house!! We're planning to dress up, watch The Nightmare Before Christmas, and play Clue, all with welcome interruptions from all our new little neighbors!! I'm so excited!!!

IMO it's about actually borrowing from the culture and not the stereotypes. If I saw someone dressed up as a Catrina from the Día de los muertos that’d be awesome, but if they just run around with a thick moustache, poncho and hat it's a completely different story. Why are people even having a discussion about this? Why’d you rather dress up as a stereotype when literally most cultures have some sort of cool yet creepy myth/creature/costume? You want to dress up as a Geisha? Buy a white kimono instead and pair the white face-paint with blue lipstick, boom, you’re a yuki-onna, you went from entertainer/prostitute to cool snow spirit; or just skip the makeup and get a featureless mask, now you’re a noppera-bou, a face stealing demon. Both qualify as spooky + no kokoros got hurt in the process, you just changed “”culture appropriation” to “culture appreciation” with a bit of lipstick/mask. If you care enough about your costume to defend and argue about it, you should care enough to do your research to make it awesome, right?

That sexy frog is definitely one of the classic scary costumes! I can’t tell you how many times I see someone choose that as their halloween costume

You can basically sum up the last category of adult costumes as "Don't be a douchebag." seriously though, I've never understood why this is so hard for the people who claim to be the adults in the country (conservatives) to understand. Great vid. Love the channel. DFTBA

You mentioned that we shouldn't dress as a character from another race or culture. I totally get not doing anything like blackface, but what about just dressing as a character you love (ie from an anime where the characters are mostly asian, at least in the eyes of the creators) but not altering anything about yourself? Is that still bad? 'Cause I really wanted to dress as Dee from Rat Queens one day. =/
@learnhowtoadult
@learnhowtoadult 6 лет назад
Katie Williams I think that if you aren't making the character's race part of the costume, you're probably ok (it's always good to be open to hearing arguments, though). But the fact that you're taking a moment to consider it speaks to a desire to be kind and respectful, and I think that's pretty awesome. -Sarah

Whatever, just wear what you want as long as it’s in the right context. Dress as a mariachi band member if you fucking want. Be Pocahontas, do whatever. Just don’t be a bad person day to day.

I have a black Kimono I sewed a few years ago from a historically accurate pattern and an easy-tie Obi I bought from Japan. I've made a white Nine-tailed fox mask and I am going to have a darned good time this Halloween. No one is going to care I am white. No Japanese descendants are going to be emotionally scarred because I created my own character. I just love Japanese lore and traditions and I think Kimonos are beautiful. I don't believe I should be barred from wearing an item of clothing because of my skin color. White people wear Japanese stuff all the time for Cosplay and are celebrated nerd culture, how is this any different? Are there offensive costumes out there? Of course! But I think people should just use common sense and not live in fear of offended people. Have a sense of humor people! Its Halloween!
@borkbork4124
@borkbork4124 6 лет назад
Mary Hornsby That's really cool about your Kimono! I totally agree with you. The whole thing about costumes relating to other racial cultures is just weird to me that it is such a hot topic. Not to mention there are more cultures beyond racial cultures.
@thatjillgirl
@thatjillgirl 6 лет назад
But that sounds like you're going as a fictional character, right? Not as a Japanese person or even a geisha or anything. That's not really the same thing. I don't think it's the specific items of clothing that are the issue. It's the going as "a member of culture x," which almost always involves a stereotyped presentation of what someone from that culture looks like. Your costume sounds totally fine and not culturally appropriating, is what I'm saying.
@monicanlamppost9631
@monicanlamppost9631 6 лет назад
The fact that you've conflated going as a fantastical (not real) creature with dressing up as someone from another culture is kind of the point of why stereotypes suck. Other than that, I don't know what your costume is going to be like for people of Japanese descent, but telling someone to have a sense of humor when they are hurt (not just emotionally but practically) by a stereotype sounds pretty entitled and presumptive. Also, it's presumptive to think you have a sweeping knowledge of the opinions of an entire ethnicity. Maybe you don't mean to sound this way, but in that case, perhaps you should reread what you wrote. Annnd what you're calling a fear of offending people is actually just basic human consideration. There are literally millions of non-racial costume choices a person could make, so why bother with something that might contribute pain to the life of another person?
@nienke7713
@nienke7713 6 лет назад
I don't completely agree with the culture costume thing. First of all, there's a big difference between dressing as a character who happens to be from a culture or dressing as a stereotype. If you think the character is problematic, complain to the people who created the character, not to those wearing the costume. However, there are plenty of characters, and most human characters have a clear race/culture assigned to them, and it's ridiculous to say that you may only wear costumes of characters that happen to have the same race/culture as you. In fact, since minorities are often underrepresented in pop culture, this argument would actually cause people from minorities to have less options available to them, which definitely doesn't fit the progressive ideal that I subscribe to. Furthermore, wearing traditional costumes that are actually properly representative of a culture when worn respectfully should also be celebrated for their spread of multi-culturalism. The only type of costume that's truly offensive is when you're dressing as a stereotype, especially if it's a stereotype that has negative associations linked to it.
@monicanlamppost9631
@monicanlamppost9631 6 лет назад
The only people who get to decide whether a cultural representation is offensive are the people from that culture. If someone tells you that the character you are portraying is problematic and you don't take that into consideration, you're kind of just being a jerk. I mean, be a jerk if you wish, but you can't just fob off responsibility for your hurtful costume once you have knowledge about what it means.
@nienke7713
@nienke7713 6 лет назад
Monican Lamppost if someone tells me the character I'm portraying is "problematic", I'll tell them to complain with the creators of the character, I'm not dressed as their culture, I'm dressed as a character, if you find the character problematic, then me not wearing the costume isn't going to erease the existence of the problematic character, if you have a problem specifically with people dressing as the character based on the person's race (or other inherent characteristics), then you're being a racist (or otherwise discriminating) jerk.

why is this comment section overflowing with people defending cultural appropriation? blackface isn't funny, right? so why would we negatively characterize another culture for our own good time- "sexy native princess" "sexy geisha" "indian goddess" just as some catholic people wouldn't want a person dressing as jesus with disrespect, we shouldn't be trying to wear feather headdresses with a miniskirt and claiming it as a costume. there are 10 MILLION other things to be dressed as.

@JennyBrooksOfficial
@JennyBrooksOfficial 6 лет назад
This whole video could have been a ten second PSA about cultural appropriation. The only negative "story" ending was when you culturally appropriated a costume. I wanna know how to find a work/life balance, how to be a good wedding guest, how to repair a dent in drywall not be told again about not dressing up as another culture, gosh dangit!

Love how "go to a party" is just an option like you can go to the adult store and buy a group of friends with the time/money/energy/space to organize a party. Still had time to take a jab at grown people who might want to actually express their sexuality though. Good job.
@learnhowtoadult

TARDIScrash Oh! We certainly didn't want to take a jab at anyone for dressing in a sexy outfit. I just thought the cat was adorable, and the imagery somewhat random. It really does depend on your circumstances as to whether or not you can go to a Halloween party, but depending on where you live, there may be some community spaces you can check out! What would you have liked us to cover? -Sarah
