Actually, that was NOT John Carpenter's film of The Thing (getting a "shameless plug") - that was the original 1951 film called The Thing From Another World. I was confused by the title board on their TV, since Carpenter's film was not released til 1982, four years after this Halloween film. I'm not sure if JC made The Thing as a remake, or a sequel, or if there's any real connection at all, other than JC saying that his film (seems to) "picks up where the original left off". Then there's the 2011 film, which is apparently a prequel to the 1982 film (I always thought it was a remake)... which I guess makes it a possible remake of the original 1951 film?

@LoneWolf_Cub_Ogami_Itto
@LoneWolf_Cub_Ogami_Itto Год назад
@@percyprimm disagreed. It's the simplicity of it. A simple act of staring in this film makes it more creepy than most of any horror that come out in 25 years. This is a suspense film, you know someone is going to die. We the audience know, the characters don't, so we anticipate when, where, how and who he'll kill. Can't stress enough the importance of not only the soundtrack, but when to use it. Almost no blood either, again the fear I'd in suspense, building constant tension coming to a head in the last 20 min. .sorry you were disappointed, but 78 Myers is genuinely scary to me. The funny thing is, back in 1978, there hadn't really been a "slasher" style movie where the killer is repeatedly stabbed/"killed" only to get back up and keep attacking. This movie was the origin of the cliché that "they're never really dead, so make sure!" Nowadays every D-list slasher flick ever made has a killer like this, who's never dead on the first try - but back then it wasn't dumb for Laurie to assume that Michael was well and truly dead after she *stabbed him in the throat* like that. :)

23:51 - He's not slow at walking, dear Mary. He's taking his time. He likes to stalk, to enjoy the terror of his victims before doing them in. That's why he wasn't on Laurie's heels after she exited out of the kitchen. He stood back and was watching her struggle, calling for help, watching the neighbors not giving her aid. He was enjoying watching her struggle before he finally decided to try to go in for the kill. If that's not nightmare inducing, I don't know what else is. Also, a little thing about the end, John Carpenter had Michael disappear and his breathing over the places he's been, to convey to the audience that he was still out there, and that no one is safe. Not even the audience. Meaning Michael disappearing could convey that he's waiting for them at home, or maybe in the backseat of their cars. But, more important, the evil that Michael may be, is still out there.

Halloween is one of the movies that really jump-started the horror movie craze of the 80's because it was technically a low budget film that was picked up by a major studio for widespread release. Good horror movies are usually low budget and high returns. This movie was was Jaime Lee Curtis' first starring role and what put her on the map. The movie "The Thing" that the kids were watching was actually the original movie from 1951, which was one of John Carpenter's favorite films, which is why he remade it 4 years later.
@glennwelsh9784
@glennwelsh9784 Год назад
That's why horror movies have been so lucrative, but I'd hesitate to call them all good. Though the 1978 Halloween is an all-time classic and the best in the series, the many sequels, requels, remakes, and reboots have wildly varied in quality. The Friday the 13th series has a similar range in quality, but they were so cheap and quick to make that the studio would pump out a new movie nearly every year throughout the 80's. When each movie cost only a couple million bucks to make at the most and earned 5-10 times its budget back in their first weekend, the movies didn't have to be great or even good to be successful.

the reason she keeps dropping the knife instead of stabbing him again is because they want to draw out the final confrontation, lol. but in-universe, you could also argue that she does it because she's so horrified at having stabbed someone. she's not an action hero here, she's just a normal teenager who, through no fault of her own, is being targeted by this monster. and i know we all say we'd stab him again just to make sure, but i honestly don't know if i would have the stomach for it if i was in that situation. i'd probably just want to get away as fast as possible. though i do hope that in the moment, i would have the presence of mind to keep the weapon.

I guess in-universe her arm was cut, she's in shock and running on adrenaline.

10:19 To answer your question about the dog Michael ate the dog, because the Dr. Loomis said he got hungry, also this theme you’ve been hearing originated from this movie, but today most people have unfortunately only heard it on social media for memes but don’t even recognize it as the Halloween theme.

Fun fact, the mask is an unfinished thing based on William Shatner's face. That means the spooky killer is wearing a Captain Kirk mask.

The prop guys just went out to a Hollywood costume store an bought them for a couple of bucks. They were so cheap and terribly made that no one guessed for years that it was supposed to be a Captain Kirk mask. So funny.

Oh Ya Mary 😂😂😂You younger people crack me up because there was a time where you could leave your doors and windows 🪟 open day and night and not be scared 😱…We used to leave our doors 🚪 open and go grocery shopping and nobody would steal nothing and if the neighbor’s needed something while you were gone they would walk over and get in the fridge or cabinet and grab what they needed…Oh the good ole days…Shame you young kids missed out on feeling that safe…😅

Halloween came out in '78 while his movie, The Thing, came out in '82. Ponder that fact for a moment, Mary. The Thing movie title on TV was from the original, classic version from the '50s, and was pretty scary for its time, but not like Carpenter's version.

The fact that he has no motive is what makes the movie so great and creepy. The later sequels tried to give what he was doing some kind of motive and it honestly ruined them.

I never understood why Laurie was stalked all Halloween day, and by Halloween night shes telling Tommy Doyle hes imagining things. The thing is it doesnt matter, because the film is so effective at being scary that the little plot holes and inconsistences are irrelevant. I agree that JLC is a much better lead than the annoying teen in Nightmare on Elm St and i didnt like the lead in Friday 13th either

70s to 80s small town middle class America especially in your neiborhood with kind neighbors where we grew up you could leave your doors unlocked at night or the back of the house door open with just tbe screen door shut ,or even if you forgot to shut or pull down your garage door things would be OK back then ,I know we did it and alot of the families in our neighborhood did it back then, unfortunately not so much any more in this day and age
