HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! And don't be like me in making your own list of least favorites. I do it so you don't have to! Have fun wasting the next 72 minutes of your life. Oh wait, it's now 72 and a HALF minutes.
I also heard that the T1 trust is ironing out some of the biggest problems like the wheelslip and they are putting on a simpler Type B poppet valve gear as seen on the C&O L2-A Hudson.
Even if Thomas is an embarrassment to rail fans, many heritage lines rely on Thomas events to make money. I can understand your absolute hatred though as I've been bullied by others for being a steam rail enthusiast just because of the little blue devil
The PRR S1 could have been a lot better if it had been a 4-6-6-4 or 2-4-4-2 or for people who would like it to be a 6-4-4-6 put boosters in the trucks and would have been better as a articulated 6-4-4-6 that was skinner
Yeah, if the S1 was a streamlined 4-6-6-4 or a 2-4-4-2 locomotive, then there would've been more S1 4-6-6-4s and 2-4-4-2s built and one would've been preserved today.
If you think the PRR S1 was bad, check out the experimental AA20 of Russia, that engine was a 4-14-4. And as you may have guessed, it literally straightened some tracks.
I'm disappointed about The Experimental AA20 of Russia because it wasn't really a proper locomotive. It wrecked every points it passed over, derailed almost every time it moved, it was to long for turntables, it was too big for couplers at that time, it was too long, too powerful, function over form, restly completely thrown out of the window and unceremoniously scrapped 23 years later in 1960 after 1934-1936. And if somebody's buying to build a full size replica of The damn long thing, THEY DON'T HAVE TO DO IT!!!, one one has already been enough. TWO can't be Incredible. It will be complete disasters!!! So the AA20-1 didn't work, and it was too big, too long, and too powerful. And if someone still wants to build a full size replica of The Experimental AA20-1 of Russia, THEY DON'T HAVE TO DO IT BECAUSE IT VERY FUCKING SUCKED!!! And if Jim would've put it on his list, then he would use like 4 F bombs! And if we want to build a full scale steam engine, do it based on a class that was actully good. Like the Regular Soviet 2-10-4 Texas type without having the cylinder over the middle wheels like the OR23, or the Extinct Canadian and American Texas types, Or the extinct UP 4-10-2s, or the SP, PRR, UP, Santa Fe, Frisco, N&W, SSW, CB&Q or The B&M 4-10-4s, or the 2-10-4s from South Africa and Brazil, Or the German 2-12-0s, or the Extinct 2-10-2s, 2-10-0s, and the 0-10-0 Big Bertha next member #2291 from the UK, or the 2-10-2s from the UK. And while we're at it and if we have a million bucks to spare. Why not get ourselves new cars. And for us personally, there can be only 3 #20 because the 20 is in The Experimental AA20-1 of Russia. Like one in the US, UK and Canada.
The 34027 "taw valley" was originally going to be the hogwarts express, but GWR 5972 "olton hall" was chosen to be the hogwarts express instead of 34027 because the director of Harry Potter and the sorcerer's stone said that 34027 looked to modern for the film,so 5972 is now the hogwarts express.
Coming back to this video after a long time & becoming an adult, I've come to realize that you used some of the Soundtrack from 'Transformers: Armada' in this video. Specifically, the OST was used for entries number 8, 6, and 1. And I love all three of these music pieces, as they (Those specifically used for entries number 6 and 1.) really sells the idea that the Decepticons were a far more major threat than what they were back in G1.
The S1 was actually regarded highly by crews who ran her. As she was very smooth, very free steaming, and very fast. A division manager of Fort Wayne said that crew often had to hold her back, lest she breaks Mallards speed record. There was one time the S1 hauled a 90 car freight train at 73 mph. I liken the S1 to the Caledonian Single 123, a show girl who had a few tricks up her sleeves. I’d say the bigger failure was the PRR Q1 cool looking, but the opposing cylinders were a headache. Also the S1 was easier to maintain than the T1s due to the latter’s Franklin Poppet Valve Gear. Was she a show girl? Yes. Was she extremely long? No denying it. Was she slippery? All duplexes are. Was she a failure? Not really.
Does anyone wanna mention the fact that it allegedly beat Mallard's record on several occasions? (and also, the opposite cylinder headache was also on the B&O N1, which came *before* the PRR Q1)
I would have to disagree with Thomas being an embarrassment; despite being based on a feeble class of engines who should’ve been rebuilt if they meant so much to the SR and BR and how he and the tv series was watered down once Hit took over. That and his basis should’ve just been a J50 like Awdry envisioned or a freelance built on Sodor. His show and books are a source of inspiration to children who grew up to be railway enthusiasts and children who will grow up to be railway enthusiasts.
The southern q1 is neville's real life counterpart but neville's number is 33010 just like engine # c10 and...... "But he had a square body like a diesel"(from "Thomas and the new engine")
@@Jimboliah3985 the AA20-1 of Russia is worse than the S1 because it's a 4-14-4. And it's longer than UP 9000. it wasn't a proper locomotive. It derailed while backing up, it damaged some switch tracks, it was too big for turntables, it was too big, functional, function over function. 😒
I would just like to say that the 56xx/66xx class were almost exclusively run in reverse going downhill mostly because of the set of trailing wheels making it easier to navigate curves with a heavy load of fully loaded coal wagons coming down from mines near the top of a valley with a set of wheels ensuring the locomotive gets guided around the curve instead of the locomotive trying to continue straight on.
I think if there was at least one Thompson engine worth bringing back, it would either be an L1 2-6-4, or the A2/3 prototype, #60500 “Edward Thompson.” 60500’s design flaws could be ironed out, and it would at least be a showcase of a Thompson Pacific that actually worked.
There's a catch about calling 500 the prototype Thompson Pacific. In reality, it wasn't the first one built, which is why I used quotation marks for it. I even said the A2/3s weren't even built in that exact numerical order.
Cgodofawesom1212 The Foxehodge Yeah, honestly Thomas The (blue embarrassment) Tank Engine looks less like an e2 and more like a Jinty. Especially in the tv series
Cgodofawesom1212 The Foxehodge Also, as for the Adriatic (2-6-4), they’re not small engines that would be used for station pilot or branch lines. So a better question would be, why didn’t Awdry use the GNR J23 he sketched and modeled?
As much of a failure the s1 is, I still admire it because of its strange wheel arrangement, and it’s streamlining. Plus I’m also biased for American steam locomotives.
@@Jimboliah3985 Ah, I see what ya did there, mate. I gotta say, using "The Dark Warrior Attacks" for your segment regarding the abomination that was PRR S1 #6100 was ingenious. That bloody locomotive reeked of evil--and failure. Also, to answer your question at 1:08:46, maybe AJ traveled back in time for the sole purpose of mucking up the design of the locomotive. Also, AJ, if you're watching this, and you see this comment, I meant no disrespect. IT WAS A RUDDY JOKE!
The 3 Jubilees that are on the main line are incredible performers. I find it hard to believe that manors struggled to create draught because their bark was too weak. They're the loudest engines in the UK.
Even though I think the S1 looked really cool, I admit it's flaws really weighed it down. Hell I even once came up with a parody of the opening text to Bee Movie featuring the S1
There are 2 problems you forgot to mention for the Bulleid Leaders. They consumed a ton of fuel, and the fact that 1 side has the boiler and the other has the coal led to uneven weight.
I think the Virginian BA's look more similar to the C&O Kanawha's (the C&O called their 2-8-4's "Kanawha's" in case you didn't know for some reason) than the B&M T1's
For once I'm happy a Great Northern engine didn't make it on a top ten list. But to play devils advocate for some of the engines while the Allegheny's never could reach their full potential (for most of their working lives) they did preform well enough in what they did, again not fantastic and had the C&O put them on fast freight they would have been perfectly fine, plus they did better then a majority of ATSF articulateds. And at least two out of 68 is a far better track record then two out of 252 Challengers built by Alco and Baldwin (mostly Alco) which were used on nine railroads, and to be totally honest the UP Challengers weren't the best ever made. As for the B&M T-1 and PRR S-1... Okay I could only defend the Alleghenys since the points you brought up were completely valid. But I would like to thank you for informing me about the 2-12-6 design, I'm very interested in learning the history behind all sorts of locomotives whether they got off the drawing board or not. Sorry about your pet, and to hell with E2 fanboys.
Jim van der Kolk I respect your opinion about the e2 class because I grew up with Thomas the tank engine and I’m still love steam engines as well as Thomas the tank engine. Sorry to make you more ticked off. And sorry about your pet. Plus there’s one thing we both agree on
I'll respect your opinion of the E2 and, I don't blame Thomas for his unfortunate status. It's mainly the fans, (specifically the ones who ship Thomas with Twilight Sparkle.) HIT Entertainment, and those bitchy SJW soccer moms who are moral thumpers who are at fault. It was a great show from 1984-1998 and should of ended after Season 5. As for the real E2's It's kind of unfortunate how they sucked as locomotives.
I gotta say the S1 Duplex is a really stupid locomotive, I mean who would want to build a replica of it? I would rather build a replica of a Southern Pacific AC-11 Cab forward instead, if I've a huge pile of cash.
Thats why the s1 isn’t being replicated. The t1s are a more proven design, even if it wasn’t as good performance wise as an ac11. Also I wouldn’t replicate an ac11 I’d just restore the only surviving one
57:28 58:45 Not to mention, at anywhere above “walking pace”, the E2s oscillated which made for a rough ride, thus why they sucked at pulling passenger trains
Wow! 😳 Seriously Jim, as much as you hate PRR S1 6100, the LBSC E2 should have taken your no.1 spot! You absolutely went to town on those engines with all the F-bombs; it's as though you'd have liked to drop an A-bomb on them! Lol 😂
As terrible as the E2s were, they could at least be seen as locomotives. Even if they were put to shame by the S100s during their days as switchers at South Hampton, they could at least cope. The S1 Duplex doesn't deserve to be called a locomotive, because it was WAY TOO PROBLEMATIC. It looked great, but performed abysmally.
Both look nice in my opinion, but I understand and respect your opinion. I assume you've heard about the LB&SCR E2 No.110 Society? They intend to build the next member of the class, No.110, with improvements including an extended coal bunker. Is this in your opinion worse than the T1 Trust?
Honestly, I don't care how a loco looks. Sometimes this just means they care more about power and speed than looks, which explains EMD. Personally I like locos like the alleganies, they look different from others giving them something to be remembered by, except the A2s, they suck. But I respect your decision to be judge in a fashion show, but with trains.
Phew! You didn't do the Class 8 L&Y Hughes Dreadnoughts.....Or the GCR 9Q Robinson "Collier's Friends" (The Hughes Dreadnoughts were much better after rebuilding, but STILL heavy on coal, and the "Collier's Friends" were also heavy on coal as their nickname suggested, but to be fair, the "Collier's Friends" were LIGHTENING quick for their wheel diameter. Which was 5ft 8ins) But despite their problems, they are my favourite large pre-grouping engines!
THANK YOU At last I found someone who knew the E2's are shit. The fact I've seen literal children online fantasize about killing the men who scrapped these steam lemons simply because Thomas was one is both amazing and pathetic at once. These engines were absolute shit and while I do have a guilty pleasure for the earlier Thomas seasons and Railway Series books, that shouldn't be a reason to warrant a new E2 built that would likely have all the problems the original 10 had. The fact these POS lasted as long as 1963 will be one of the history of British Transportation's greatest mysteries.
Besides, what’s the point of building a new E2 now when we know it’s gonna suck, and we have dozens of Thomas Replicas across the world?, including the one in Nashville which is the most accurate I’ve seen. I saw during the 2009 Day Out With Thomas Event when I was 6 and I had so much fun that day.
Someone needs to build a new S1, but put the needed modifications for it to work like making it shorter, having it so more the half of the weight isn't on the bogey and trailing trucks, and making sure it has easy access to the body of the loco for repairs and easy lubrication and probably like all the comments I have posted this might get a reply from Jim. (Also I like your content btw and I think you are a great RU-vidr.)
about the T1 replica I wanna make a Milwaukee road F7 and then break Mallard's speed record for the following reasons: 1: bragging rights 2: for shits and giggles 3: it could also draw attention to this forgotten class And for the last one: Never before have I been so offended by something I completely agree with and also about Thomas the tank engine, if it weren't for it, I probably wouldn't be a Railfan again and the Railway series and S1-5 are pretty much not a embarrassment, the new dumpster fire garbage IS an embarrassment
I already heard that from my friend Christopher who said that the Trust decided not to gun for Mallard's record, and that the main focus is just getting the thing built and fired up for excursion passenger service.
Poor 5600s (taffy tanks). Chris Eden Green put them in his bottom 10, too. Jubilees and Bullied Pacifics are two of my favourite classes and spam cans have been very successful in preservation. Alleghenies are very attractive in my book. I like the smokebox-mounted airbrake pumps.
*Collett's* 5600 class 0-6-2s were flawed in that, as originally designed, the valve rod had essentially no guidance and the prototype failed under steam after one revolution of the driving wheels. The alteration to prevent this was to install _massive_ guides for the valve gear crossheads, way over-engineered.
A soundtrack from Transformers Armada called The dark warrior attacks. It's on RU-vid, albeit in the same video as another soundtrack that comes before it.
Jim van der Kolk And, believe me, for certain purposes like my headcanon of Madeline and the Costume Party, that music is absolutely and downright BONE-CHILLING to me.
1:11:08 I'm actually planning a full-sized Y6b New Build project, but it is still several years out. I know SOMEONE'S bound to shoot me down for it, but I plan to make it the next number in the sequence, 2201, as opposed to the obvious choice of building a replica of 2174. Also, Great Video! Granted though, regarding your comments about the E2's, while I think you were right about the locomotive, I have to disagree on Thomas being a disgrace to rail preservation, as it's been instrumental in getting youngsters into trains, which in today's rail preservation world, is FAR from a disgrace.
I do agree with you about the E2 tank engines being a shitty class of locomotives and I used to like the E2s because of Thomas the tank engine but now that I discovered that they not very successful. I have started to hate the E2 tank engines and losing my interest of Thomas and Friends because of how bad the franchise has been over the years.
Originally, Wilbert Awdry wanted Thomas to be a LNER J50 tank engine but the illustrator stupidly decided to base Thomas as an E2 tank engine which resulted in Wilbert Awdry and the illustrator who he originally worked with argued with each other back then.
The illustrator who Wilbert Vere Awdry worked with was Reginald Payne who was the one who stupidly based Thomas the tank engine as an E2 tank engine instead of a LNER J50 tank engine in the first place.
My 3rd cousin had that toy at 2:56! By the way, sorry about one of your pets not doing good! Hope you don't mind me pointing that out! And also, Hope your halloween isn't too bad in spite of the shit you all have to take doing this list!
You're actually the first person to mention my pets since the re-upload. So thanks for the extra bit of thought. Halloween wasn't ruined by this list since I recorded and edited it all in advance. But it was ruined because the pet in question sadly had to be put down...
@@Jimboliah3985 So sorry you had to go through that, lad. I know what it's like having to put a pet to sleep, and it ain't a pleasant experience--at all.
44:04 *Jim:* "Britain's Worst Looking Pacifics" *Bulleid Q1 Pacific:* Are You Sure About That?! *(Had this design been made it would've EASILY dethroned the A2/2)*
54:36 you have screwed UP my friend you just criticized a man who worked hard to entertain us children and a locomotive who holds his name with grace and respect who did likewise!
Maybe - but it's unlikely. *Bulleid* was a fine engineer, the work he did on the *LNER* proved that, but he had some really terrible ideas too, the oil-bath for the *Merchant Navy* class valve gear was one.
I agree. The e2s do suck. Although I do think with a thorough rebuild they could’ve worked well. I think if they extended the bunker, extended the cab and somehow made it use less water. Then I think it would’ve worked perfectly for branch lines though. Then they would’ve never had to work at South Hampton. While it is idealised by popular culture I don’t think it makes it awful. I do think if Thomas didn’t exist or was a j50. Then the e2s wouldn’t get as much hate. In fact they would just be forgotten about entirely. Still, while they may suck I can tolerate them. And if someone decides to do a replica I won’t complain. Also good job with the vid 👍
Here are the Hornable Mentions: 1. A tie between the Baltimore and Ohio N1 #5600 and PRR Q1 #6130 2. The PRR T1 (the ones with the controversial performance) 3. The D&H 2-8-0 Consolidations (the one with high maintenance and unsuccessful design. 4. The Union Pacific GE Steam Turbines 5. Russian Railways The Experimental AA20-1 of Russia.
I have to say this: hating on steam engines and scrapping on them is considered wrong. Put them on display in a museum instead. That should have changed everything. What would you think of that? Will that change your mind? There's no need to hate these engines! At all! I will get models of the S1 class though, not build replicas of them. Also if you're saying that you dislike Thomas, I can't understand. The Classic and CGI Brenner episodes: not really, he's likeable. In the HiT and CGI Miller episodes, I can understand. He was an irresponsible idiotic dickish moron in those episodes. Also liking real engines but not the ones in TTTE? I'm so done with this!
I think Thomas the Tank engine is a ridiculously formal sounding name for a silly, moon-faced talking train. An American probably would have called it something like Tommy Tank Engine. Yeah, the S-1 had problems with slipping, but they still turned in some impressive performances, hauling thousand-ton plus trains at top speeds of 100 mph or more. No steamers outside America could do that. I'm also a bit sad that the Pennsy T-1 gang aren't going to try to get some vindication in terms of the previous T-1 speed claims. Last but not least, I hope you're feeling better.
In my honest opinion Thomas is okay, I did watch it growing up as a child, but I hate the fact how OVERRATED THE E2S ARE, like nearly every single person in the Thomas Community has an E2 OC with like emo hair or something, I honestly agree with you, the E2s fucking sucked, I'm glad none of them were preserved.
@Jim van der Kolk Your Voice sounds so loud and funny when the lighting effects came on the E2s and S1 and using the F Bomb! And you were Like Stewie Griffin Angry, Eric Cartman, Squidward Angry, Bubbles Angry from Powerpuff Girls, Angelica Pickles Angry, Shouting Bear (Tex Avery) Jesse (McJuggerNuggets), Angry Grandpa, Lunatic Dad, William (Violette1st), DaddyOFive, Boris the Teeth Guy (Goanimate), Jacob630 from Goanimate and Lola, Lori, Lynn, Luna, Lisa, Lily, Lana and Luan from The Loud House when You were screaming angrily about the least favorite locomotives that you hated. And your lighting was scary and you had rage about these locomotives because you hated them!
