Tartarus tries to get Miranda Keyes to reunite the "Index" with the Core... The Arbiter and Sargeant Johnson work to stop him. All learn the purpose of the Halos. I recommend watching this video in "High Quality" if your computer is good.
Arbiter is trying to reason with Tartarus here because he is still trying to convince himself. He hasn't completely accepted yet that what he believed his entire life was a lie, but the Oracle confirms it. You can see on his face the sadness from him accepting the truth. Tartarus and Arbiter represent the 2 ways humanity can react to the same terrible truth. Sad acceptance, or furious denial
Even when I was young, I still felt the pain and regret and betrayal in the Arbiter's words in this scene. And the confusion and dissonance in Tartarus. Bungie did an exceptional job, and Keith David performed excellently. To this day I STILL love this scene, and hearing that line...
The fact that thousands of years of religiously worshipping the forerunners, all those poor generations of innocent sangheili _(and other species)_ deceived into accepting polytheism which - in the eyes of God himself - is the greatest sin. To learn that all their lives were dedicated to a belief system based on just one lie. Words cannot possibly describe what thoughts were going through Thel Vadam's mind. And nobody can ever understand how heartbroken he must've felt when he learned about how Billions of his people for thousands of generations had lived and died deceived on account of the San'Shyuums' lust for power. That face tells it all.
I don't think they re-recorded the lines for the remaster, but I agree. I think it feels sadder because of the close-ups, you can SEE Tartarus' rage at being forced to do as a human tells him to. In the same way, you can see the Arbiter's sadness when his belief is finally broken and his fears are confirmed. The anniversary version is zoomed out and makes it harder to see for some reason.
I dont know, I feel like the audio is slight different it starts quieter and then when he says "Betrayed" it sounds a bit deeper? almost more angry and sad than just sad? Im not sure im not an expert lol either way, the line is still heart wrenching
Why? Humanity is 99% similar to chimpanzees. We're basically apes ourselves. Is it because of that reason? That you see something within the brutes that you yourself denies within yourself? Anyways... Brutes are awesome. Love Halo. They also remind me of Dragon Ball Z, with the 'great ape' form of the Super Saiyans, but without the psychic powers, but instead plasma rifles. :)
Tartarus's face at 1:36 is extremely powerful. You can see the wealth of emotion of betrayal he must have felt. But because he believed so hard in the Prophets he stood behind what he believed in. Bungie knew how to make good, emotional moments in the Halo series. Something 343 has serious issues with.
It's not just that he believed in the prophets, it's that he and his people finally have the opportunity to prove their true worth the prophets that he doesn't want to let it go. Consider the early cutscene where Tartarus and and some brutes drag the Arbiter to the prophets. Tartarus is dismissed immediately, and Tartarus makes it plain as day that he's not satisfied with this role. I've never read any Halo novels, tie-in comics, what have you, but I've always considered Tartarus to be extremely old. Imagine living your entire life under the thumb of the covenant, never treated with the respect you think you deserve, FINALLY getting it, only to realize it's for absolutely nothing.
@@whitedude877 it's just politics at that point. He will follow the prophets even when he knows they are wrong, purely because it advances the brute cause and their position within the covenant.
Despite the rivalry between the elites and brutes and Tartarus trying to kill him, it feels like Tartarus still respects Arbiter. He did give him a chance to speak before the battle, as if he felt Arbiter was an Elite to be revered and listened to.
To me Halo 2 had the best story than all the Halo games. Even showing what the halo rings were built for to seeing the great skism and seeing the gravemind and seeing high charity fall to the flood. Shit no wayin hell the new 343 halo games are gonna top that shit.
You know what now that I look deeper into it Assassin’s Creed and Halo have very similar Storylines this is basically Altair and Abbas and Ezio when he was fighting the pope.
Tartarus gets told the truth by an actual forerunner AI about what the rings are for. And still tartarus believes the prophets word over an actual forerunners word.
I think Tartarus realized what the Oracle said was true, but Brutes don't value honesty or symbolism. They value brotherhood and sacrifice. For the Prophets to have thrown away the lives of untold numbers of his bretheren broke him. Realizing that he could never find meaning in this life again, he decided to find solace in unity.
I remember seeing this as an 8 year old and finally understanding the dangers of blind, zealous, religious fundamentalism. This series was beyond influential to so many.
Isn't it just great how the prerendered horseshit from H2A took all the emotion out of this exchange? Man, so impressive, *those were so impressive!* Did Microsoft pay at least one of all our friends to make some fucking comment about "how good that [CGI, therefore irrelevant] looked" or is it only me that noticed that?
can you just imagine that fight scene remastered? Tartarus has impaired movement and efficiency with a lower HP bar smart AI limited allies co-ordination MANDATES with limited opportunities*. Not a set regiment*: co- ordinated. "CO-" Tartarus plays more defense of the index than anything. but fearing no one else hangs his junk low. ai have limited ammo. including the Big Stick. just brutally embellished to cinematic grade choreography as far as AI and Balance goes. to touch on a few of the lighter matters involved in doing it to a **surreal experience**. and they speak Covenant Brute, a Language that allowed the brutes to communicate with the Sangheili given lingual deficits. more often than Covenant "3rd Common", which wasn't favorable for the brute linguistic challenge.
I wonder what in the fuck was truth thinking about when he went to earth. I mean wouldn't he have died from the pulse of installation 05 because he wasn't in the control or in an underground bunker or anything. Didn't he think that through.
The Hierarchs knew the truth but didn’t want to lose power so they decided to just kill everyone. Imagine if the entire covenant found out; what would the other races do to them?
It's kind of a thing where it's answered if you played both Halo Combat Evolved and Halo 2, you'll get it. To sum it up, the religion of the Covenant, The Great Journey, is the seeking their "god's" (The Forerunners) creations, the Halos, and activating the Halo Array for believers of the religion to ascend to godhood. In reality, the Halos were galactic superweapons that kills all sentient beings in the galaxy as a last resort against the Flood. The reason it's significant because the Arbiter is learning the truth and his campaign against the humans, leaving billions dead in his wake, was all a lie. A lie told by the Prophets that if the truth were to surface, it would shake the entire foundation of the Covenant.
Despite all Tartarus has done to Arbiter, betraying him, trying to have him killed, massacring his people. Arbiter still tries to reason with him. Because he knows that just like himself, Tartarus was misled. the Prophets deceived both of them, and pitted their races against each other. He knew they were not true enemies, but puppets to the Prophet's evil
