@@AlgaeEater09 he's saying that to spark. Chief looks back when he says "when did you know" and you can see guilty sparks blue light illuminating the background before he comes out. Spark also responds directly saying "just now, but I had my hopes".

New headcanon: He doesn’t like speaking to Arby because he’s an alien and he finds it disturbing to talk with them. However, when the only sentient beings present are an alien and an ancient spacefaring zombie hivemind, he suddenly doesn’t think regular aliens are all that different from himself.
I think the reason we look back on these two so much isn't because they talked alot but because their friendship was defined more by their actions than dialogue. Like remember in Halo 3 Cortana when the Arbiter shown up to help Chief or how Chief let the Arbiter kill Truth.
Combine that with their camaraderie in the final mission of the game. Only 3 people stayed on the Ark to finish the mission, and that’s no coincidence. The nods to each other on the Dawn also takes the cake here for showing how far they had come since the beginning of Halo 3

The best part is this is only a fraction of the scenes they are both in. They spend all of Halo 3 together and in that entire time Chief only says one word to him.

There’s something so cool about a silent bond. I think if two enemies can get along and work well with each other with little words, that the bond will go further than those who would speak to each other.
I vividly remember playing one of the halo’s with my dad and being excited for the arbiter sections. Not that i ever got to any, I never got past the first level
it’s a good way of showing friendship/allyship through actions rather than conversations, but it is still funny to think about how iconic of a duo they are despite literally only saying a couple of sentences to each other in the games
Hilarious as this is, it's very possibly why their bond is so iconic and memorable. It's not like you need that much verbal communication when you both are just on the same wavelength. At the end of the day, both characters are the strong, silent type; They both respected that about each other, and both focused their attention towards their common enemy.
At the beginning of Floodgate in H3, behind the visor and all that stoicism, with his one liner "worse..." , you could tell he was deeply fearful but due to his training and his courage, he suppressed it and didnt display it. Canonically, Chief was terrified of the Flood and rightfully so. Heck, even the signifcantly more advanced Forerunners were terrified. Everyone is terrified of the Flood but itself. Even though Spartans are exceptionally courageous, Master Chief was one of if not the most courageous of them all. The Arbiter is also a different breed.
It's really funny how all the fan made content from the late 2000s and early 2010s (Like Arby N' The Chief and One One Se7en) portrayed these two like they had some kind of buddy cop relationship, and they never even had a full conversation.
The fact Arbiter was the one killing humanity on mass, caused the fall of Reach, and was the one who chased Chief to the first Halo - only for Master Chief to say "I don't think about you" is hilarious
What you don't see is the 40 hours of trash talk my brother and I gave each other in coop Halo 3. Those were the real conversationa between Arbiter and Chief.
Everyone talking about how Chief never talks to Arby, no one talking about how Arbiter has seen the flood as many time as Masterchief, why didn't he recognise the infested ship just as fast?
On the last levels of Halo 2, the Chief is present when the Flood invades High Charity, so he knows most of the covenant fleet is at their disposal. The Arbiter spends that time in Delta Halo instead, so he doesn't know it yet. Up until that point he probably believed the flood was still stuck on Delta Halo.
this is such a weird querk of bungie writing. the master chief and cortana also canonically only spent 30 days together from their first introduction before the fall of reach and her "termination"in halo 4. the time frame they knew each other for was longer, but they where either seperated on missions like between halo 2 and 3, or the master chief was in cryo sleep that includes the 6 og bungie books. so really, the end scene in halo 4 between them was absolutely only for us, the players who spent over a decade with cortana at that point. The master chief and her where still basically strangers canonically. this is weird on many fronts, because not only is it unintuitive to the player, but their relationship in halo 2, 3 and 4 makes little sense. furthermore, the entirety of halo 5s secondary plotline and a portion of halo 4s plot hinge on them being inseparable battle buddies for literal ages. also also halo 3s scene in which hood asks chief "do you trust cortana really that much" makes double no sense. A: the obvious "its likely that this isn't even cortana but a gravemind trap" but also B: he literally barely knows her, but is canonically aware of her origins and knows that she is unpredictable, unhinged and absolutely does not play by anyones rule nor is she loyal to anyone. she is to him, but there is no way he would be able to trust an ai known for manipulating everyone and everything, when he barely knew her for 30 days. actually much less than that at this point in the plot. Girl was online for barely an hour before she wreaked havoc on oni systems and broke any encryption she could get her hands on. not hating or critiquing bungies writing btw, i love their dynamic alot just like everyone. i just also love over thinking story details like this :P

Eh, I'd like to hear more from Chief in Halo 3. Someone made a comment on the Halo 2 anniversary cutscenes and said that he talks too little in 3 and too much in 4.

One thing I love about this is, you -- the player -- are Master Chief, but so is Arbiter. When you play in co-op, Arbiter is literally your friend that you invited over. Master Chief and Arbiter are friends, but only because you're playing with your friend in real life.
I'll never forgive the whinny babies who complained about having to play as the Arbiter so much that Bungie decided to "correct" that by having him be a secondary character in 3. He was awesome in Halo 2, most interesting character in the games in my opinion.
@@MechanicalRabbitsTrue, I think I personally like Chief more just because of how you can tell how he feels about Cortana and Johnson and Guilty Spark and Arbiter etc without any need for words and just how badass and iconic some of his lines are but the Arbiter was very interesting. He added more to the world building of Halo than Chief did if that makes sense.
He talks to the Chief a lot during gameplay except we are supposed to assume his character during those moments, so this isn't entirely representative.
they talk in the cutscene after the covenant, when a new halo gets shown off like a new car and Arby pretty much is like yeah man that’s the replacement for the one you fucked up, and then chief goes “when did you know” only other time he says a word to Arby in halo 3

@@LOL_Garrus no, Spark's lights are already visible. Neither chief nor arbiter reacts to spark a la "i was asking him" / "So anyways chief in knew as early as...". Spark is the one who answers. Chief has no reason to believe Arbiter knew about the replacement halo. Chief is absolutely not asking how he knew that he destroyed the ring. All the rules of language and context say that has talking to spark
I mean to be fair this video would be a lot longer if it was all the times the arbiter spoke to master chief. Like y’know halo’s whole “quiet protagonist” thing.
I like how Arbiter's body is positioned similar to jesus in the Gravemind cutscene. A subtle way to represent the current predicament the poor guy is in.
This doesn't include it all though. Arbiter tells Chief "Were it so easy" when Chief puts a gun to his head. Arbiter also tells Chief "We traded one villain for another" in the cutscene after he kills Truth. He also talks about Cortana to Chief at one point around that time in a cinematic. Then there's all of the nods and silent gestures between them in various cutscenes. And then on top of that there's some in-game dialogue as well where Arbiter speaks to Chief. So this video should be way, way longer. I mean, it's a funny video don't get me wrong, but it really does exclude a LOT.
