Nine Inch Nails are a huge part of my life and define a lot of my musical taste. So when I found out that Halsey's new album was entirely produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, I had to investigate. Check my reaction and leave your thoughts in the comments!

In her interviews she explained how a lot of her songs were about her baby, and how she was pretty much trying to heal all her past traumas before her baby was born and that’s why a lot of the songs talk about “daddy issues, being a fraud” and such. She’s calling herself out. It’s a very HEALING album, I just LOVE it. It’s deep/meaningful and enough grungeyness for my emotional/dark self hah.

As someone who has been a fan of hers for the last 7 years, this is by far my favorite album of hers. Trent and Atticus did a FANTASTIC job on this album between the piano, synths, industrial sound, and some of the songs that don’t have any of that. The production and engineering of this album is the best there’s been on her music in my opinion.

as a fervent Halsey fan since Room 93, “Darling” is probably one of her least typical songs. I feel she’s always expressed herself in a vulnerable way but it rarely is it so stripped back. Her cinematic, ethereal alt, pop-punk/pop-rock filter has always been somewhat present as almost an armour between Halsey and Ashley. That song (imo) is the most pure track on any of her albums (and yes i’m including More). In my eyes it wasn’t for her fans but she chose to share it with us anyway which is a beautiful thing. It is for her baby, and by extension herself.

Halsey has some great lyrics but this is also a fantastically produced album. The only disservice this album has is such a fantastic opening that on my first listen I kept wanted to go back to those first 3 tracks. Definitely get overly that after the first couple listens. Oddly, you say Darling is what you expect from Halsey when i'd say the opposite! Halsey plays with a lot of alterantive, rock, pop and R&B sounds with only one of two stripped back songs like this in her discography. She has a great cadence in her vocal, great flow and is a fantastic live performer.Know you've heard some Halsey tracks but would be interesting to see you react to her other albums as Halsey does play with a lot of different genres and has some great lyrics.

8/10 sounds about right, maybe 8.5 for me if it's allowed :P Definitely some of my favourite Halsey production but still need to sit with it as a big fan of her first two albums, Badlands and hopless fountain kingdom

It so interesting to hear that! The first song on the album is the only one I skip and I love the rest of them so much. The first 3 are my least listened to probably and I listen to the second half of the album first when I’m in the car lol such great talent from Halsey and the guys and it really paid off! ❤️
@shelbybilicki

Darling is such a perfect acoustic song to put in the middle of the album. It breaks it up and Lindsey Buckingham's guitar playing is so classic and timeless. The production and arrangement of the album as a whole is quite genius. I think the last song is a great choice to close the album out. It's deep but soft, like a pallete cleanser that also really leaves you feeling the message of the entire record.

Dude for the first maybe week I couldn’t get past the first 3 songs! I listened to them over and over and over and over. I just got my 5y/o the actual cd to play in her room (she’s a MASSIVE Halsey fan 😂) and she plays #1 over and Over and OVVEEERRRR 🤣 and scream sings it lol she’s obsessed.

Trent and Atticus have said that they formed all the songs around the melodies and lyrics that Halsey wrote and sent over, with a few changes of course. Just goes to show that her song writing ability and conceptual vision, was able to stand up with 2 of the industry’s finest producers 🙌🏼

Halsey's lyrics reference all of her other albums, like "I want a fist around my throat" and "Cry so hard I choke" are in reference to Castle's "Now my neck is open wide, begging for a fist around it. Already choking on my pride, so there's no use crying about it". And her love songs are about her baby that she suffered 3 miscarriages to have

“Ya’aburnee” is an Arabic expression used for someone you love and very commonly used by mothers to their children. It literally translates to what Halsey mentions in the song, “[i hope] you will bury me before I bury you” because the person cannot stand living in a world without the other.

I’ve always been a fan of Halsey, her darker songs were always my favorite, Control for example. This album is like a fucking dream come true. Bells in Santa Fe, the Lighthouse, Tradition, 1121 (which happens to be my birthday 😂), Lilith, I Am Not A Woman I’m A God, Whispers are the stand outs for me. I want to watch the film she made to accompany the album but it’s not on any streaming services yet, it only went to IMAX theaters. I really hope she stays with this sound, it’s incredible.

Lilith was the first song she wrote for this album. Honey was written when Halsey's younger brother asked her about her writing process and she wrote this song, later on she and her manager realised it was a banger so they added it to the album. 1121 is the date she found out she was pregnant with her son, she thought she had COVID. Ya'aburnee is arabic and it translates to "You Bury Me" a decleration of one's hope they'll die before there partner. Darling is a lullaby to her son. You asked for this relates to her wanting to be a mother for so long. Halsey's way with lyrics is *chefs kiss* *Punksey was born with this album*

This whole project, as i believe she's said, is about the horrors and traumas surrounding pregnancy and motherhood. In that sense, i think Ya'aburnee (which translated from Arabic means, "may he bury me"), is the perfect closing track for a record that is in a way dedicated to her newborn son. Love this reaction though, great to hear the perspective from a NIN fan. You should give her previous record Manic a listen if you haven't already!

I had never really listened to her. I've always been a NIN fan. This album is the best thing I've heard in years. I really hope they do another together. Lighthouse is amazing. I want a longer version, a couple more verses. That said, as it stands the song could be sung from the perspective of a woman murdered and tossed into the sea or from the perspective of a Siren luring sailors to their death. Love it.

as a Halsey fan is so interesting to see how NIN fans reacts to the album because you are not familiar with halsey's music and im not familiar with NIN music either so it was surprising for almost everybody ... it was amazing to see halsey working with people she admired so much and who she wanted to work for so long. Also it's interesting how you can identify the undertones as "classic NIN" because as I said I'm not familiar with NIN music and now I think they're geniuses. Halsey's lyrics were one of the first things that made me fell in love with her music when I listened to Badlands, they have such a brutal and honest way to write about how they feel and their struggles that sounds almost poetic and heartbreaking... for us fans to see her struggle with her reproductive health and thinking that she could never have a baby or even a family and seeing now in 2021 that she has everything she ever dreamed of makes songs like Darling, 1121 and Ya'aburnee so sad but at the same time so fulfilling after all she'd been through. This album felt like the right thing for Halsey and as a fan I couldn't be happier. I throughly recommend you to listen to her previous albums :) thank you for this review.

You could almost name a Song and then a NIN fan would suggest listening to a corresponding NIN Song and you’d pretty much see the similarity sometimes in the first couple Notes. Trent loves Triads. If you like Tradition listen to The Day The World Went Away, Leaving Hope both off of Still or The Frail off The Fragile.
@AmalaFrequents
@AmalaFrequents 2 года назад
It's interesting hearing your take which is more production and sound focused. I often think of Halsey as being distinctive through her lyrics- the sort of brutal twists of poetic honesty being the hallmark, and being able to sing in pretty much any genre. So I often read Halsey albums as more of a cohesive thing, the progress of the narrative with the music influencing the tones and flavours. I really enjoy this album, at first I was more taken with the same tracks as you but after a few listens I've come to really love listening to the album as a complete piece and those other tracks have really grown on me- though Lighthouse is still my favourite. I feel like you might find Manic an interesting album to check out from Halsey (if you haven't checked it out as a whole piece). I'm not sure it would be 100% your flavour musically but it's the first album they wrote not as a concept album but about theirself- also the one You Should Be Sad is on- and there are some real lyrical stunners on there. She said she writes her songs designed to be listened to multiple times to pick out the true depth. I'd be interested to see if you, like me, find a first listen of a Halsey album is usually good but around the third or fourth listen it becomes something else as a complete project. Enjoyed your take on this. Also I feel like you would probably enjoy a live Halsey show- her concert feels was more rock and has some great haunting moments and atmospheric creation with a lot of good heavier sound. (Plus they're a highly professional performer I was stunned.)

As a fellow Nine Inch Nails fan, I’ve been excited to hear your reaction and really enjoyed it! Feel the same as you on most tracks, especially for Whispers and The Lighthouse. I hadn’t listened to Halsey too much before, but I enjoyed some of her tracks from Hopeless Fountain Kingdom and massively respect her love and creativity for concept albums. I was really excited for this album when I heard Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are producing and it didn’t disappoint for me. It’s nice to have this sound back - the industrial, the punk, alternative and just general rock sound. Also “The Fragile” album is actually my favorite album from Nine Inch Nails, too. So many tracks from there that I love like “The Mark Has Been Made”, “The Fragile”, “We’re in This Together”, “The Day the World Went Away” and “Where Is Everybody?” Always glad to hear someone love that album, too.

Hell yeah, The Fragile still my favourite NIN album. Easily within my top 5 albums of all time. Trents involvement in this Halsey album was the only reason I was interested in checking the album out but so glad I did, it's an amazing blend 👌

Man, nothing makes me happier as a music lover than seeing another person jamming and grooving to one of my favourite artists. I honestly had no clue that there was Nine Inch Nails influence in this album (tbh though, I can't recall if I've heard any of their songs, probably have). Listening to the whole album from start to finish is both a feat and strangely dark yet whimsical journey. I typically focus more on the hidden, covert meanings behind lyrics, and consider how well they meld with the instrumental mood and tone, but I'm curious to hear it while under the influence of some Mary Jane. I tend to hear more, nearly inperceivable, layers within the music that way (btw, hopeless fountain kingdom, especially heaven in hiding and don't play, it seriously incredible while stoned). Overall, it's a brilliant release, Halsey has evidently matured as a person: spiritually, emotionally, and especially vocally. Their voice sounds much more controlled and stronger in this than previous albums (not dissing the first 3, they're amazing albums)

Multiple listens highly recommended so it seeps into your bones. My favourite album of 2021 so far, 9/10. PS - Have you listened to Deafheaven’s new album (“Infinite Granite”)?
