Very good, hopefully more people will start to embrace Linux because of your efforts...

I did, largely because of one of Kevin’s earlier videos and some helpful users on HRCC’s FB group.

I've been very impressed with Linux as of late. They have made vast improvements over the last 10-20 years since I last tried it. I run Linux Mint on pretty much all of my systems now because of it.

@loughkb Kevin - thank you *SO* much for posting this. I'm a newly minted Ham operator here and recently picked up a RTL-SDR dongle to experiment with SDR on my Ubuntu box. I was R E A L L Y struggling to get the dongle communicating with Cubic SDR on this machine until I came across this and it broke the log jam. Once I installed Soapy and some other dependencies the dongle showed up in the Cubic application and now I'm in business. Eventually I'll hook this up to my random long wire antenna. Thanks again & 73 Tom D - KF0OGU

Thanks so much Kevin for sharing your hard job!! . Brilliant!👋 Your script works 100% - Ubuntu 20.04 - 64b installed on a stand alone bootable SSD external drive (grub on it). ... I spent so long time without success.... You did it!. 73 from Switzerland. HB9HFJ, Pat

I keep bugging them for official Linux support but they only come back with a vague we are planning on doing that in the future. It's the only thing holding me up from buying it right now.

dr Kevin, om, your instructions were so short and they finally made it work for me! I bought an RSP1 from a fellow ham a few months ago and followed various not-too-old but still outdated instructions from various sources in the web, and I couldn"t get it to run. Thanks so much for distilling out the relevant stuff for me! I use it on Ubuntu 21.04 with stock GQRX. 73 de Steve, OE3SPR

This is absolutely incredible. I have been trying to get the api's installed for my RSPdx and have literally been working all week on this, and then I stumble on this script and install and up and running within 5 minutes. Kevin, I sincerely thank you for taking the time to put this together and share it with everyone!

What would I recommend for what? If you're asking which distribution I would recommend, and you're coming from windows, I'd recommend Ubuntu mate. The mate desktop looks and feels similar to windows XP/7 and is easier to transition to.

Too bad the 3.07 Linux API for the RSP1A is so unstable. It frequently (sometimes several times a day) just stops working and I have to restart the service with systemctl to be able to use my SDR again.

Yeah, I know. If they'd invest a bit more and have someone rework it properly, their hardware could be the choice bit under linux.

Yours works! I could not get my SDRPlaydx going on Macs or Ubuntu following the instructions on the SDRPlay website. Needed to freshly install Ubuntu to wipe out history. And I see hickups, and my Ubuntu freezes, about every 15 minutes... Thanks very much!

Hi Kevin.Thank you for your very good video. I installed both cubic sdr and gqrx on Kubuntu connecting sdrplay dx.I used a virtual machine vmware from windows11. In both the software rspd dx is working, but i have the problem that the audio is crackling in all frequencies and modes. I installed the software with your script. Do you have please some suggestion about how to solve this problem and what can be the cause? Thank you again. I appreciate a lot your work. 73.

You can use wine to run some Windows applications under Linux. But not all. I have a couple of videos on doing this. Some things do not work, including SDRplay's software since it relies on their Windows API which will not work under wine.

This is awesome. Thank you for putting in the time to troubleshoot and document getting this up and running. Do you know of software to control the sdr exclusively from command line/ssh for running on a server? I'm new to sdr on Linux, but have wanted to setup hardware to run an sdr receiver with wspr and other decoding software on a server.

Nice overview! Thanks! I noticed in your blog there is a script for Raspberry Pi. I'm interested in that one since I'm about to inherit a Pi 3 Model B. I may have missed it, but I have a few questions: which Pi will your scripts work on, and what PI OS was used as the starting point before you executed the scripts? Thanks!
@loughkb
@loughkb 2 года назад
I used the current release as of the posting of this video. It will probably work on a more recent version. The model B might struggle due to high CPU demand. I did run on on a B+ and it will certainly work on a 4.

Thanks for another great video. I switched to Ubuntu 14 years ago. Do any of the Linux SDR apps receive 70cm? Was wondering if it would work for a ham satellite receiver?
@loughkb
@loughkb 3 года назад
GQRX and CubicSDR both let you put in any frequency your hardware can handle. With the sdrplay, that's anything between 1KHz and 2GHz.

I tried doing this with your old video from a couple years ago and I gave up. Too much had changed with the software. Can’t wait to try again. I have it set up on my Mac Mini and Cubic SDR, but wanted it on my MXLinux or Linux Manjaro.

Very nice. Did you get all functions in the sdrplay to work in your set-up? Or is any function missing that you normally have in the Windows based software?
@loughkb

I haven't compared them closely as I'm almost never in windows. There's probably a few that are missing.

Hey Kevin - since you're running SDR Play in a VM, maybe you're fighting some performance issues due to emulation/hypervisor overhead?
@loughkb

The demos were on my machine, not in the VM. But on that note, running sdr uno in a win10 vm I have, it was perfect. No issues at all.

How is an SDRPlay different from a generic USB dongle, other than the ability to tune lower than ~20MHz, as shown in the video? Does the SDRPlay also have Tx capabilities? I use Cubic, start Soapy inside Cubic, and I'm off to the races with a Nooelec dongle. I downloaded Cubic and Soapy from the repository - no scripting required. I'm using a Raspberry Pi 4, running Debian, but po-tay-to, po-tah-to.
@loughkb
@loughkb 3 года назад
The sdrplay is more sensitive, has a bias-T option, 1KHz to 2GHz range, and can display an entire 10MHz at once. No TX.

Renee, I've been running it exclusively for more than a decade. I do everything with it and can say that it works wonderfully. I also use to run several linux servers in a large company, the most reliable servers we had. Your opinion is probably based a few bad experiences you had, most likely due to impatience.
