Working amazing DX on the beach with just 20 watts and a vertical halfwave antenna for 20 meters #hamradio #portablehamradio #hamradioantenna Link to the maker of the antenna I used M1ECC Antennas: www.m1ecc-ante...
Great morning, awesome QSO'S. It's always fun to chat with Aussies and Kiwis. Glad your finding time to get out on the beach and talk it up. 73s, N5MLS
OK, that very first QSO, Australia at 59+ with you doing 20W on a wire...I have GOT to get me to saltwater at some point. Of course, I also have to get my sleepy a** out early enough to get those. I'm never voluntarily up with the dawn :-D
Cool, it is nice to see the station on the other side of der QSO. It was a hard Weekend. 73 de Matt DG0OKW member of the DA0HQ 15m SSB Team (not the OP from your QSO)
Haha, look at you with all those VK’s i bet they loved getting RI as well. I am traveling at the moment, in Colorado Springs. Hoping to get to a park or do a summit on the drives we are taking, but the vacay time is trumping the play radio time for sure at the moment. But hey, i am going to be in Breckenridge for a week starting Friday, so there’s that.
Hey Walt. A VL4 right away, my goodness. This is the greatest start! EFHWs are great. I was QRV 0800Z-1200Z to as well using the same gear (although my EFHW was in inverted V over 3 poles), would have dreamt to work you! I worked a station from NH on 15m so there would have been a chance... Another time! Your spiraled vertical EFHW over a 10m pole certainly is something I'll try. Thanks for yet another great tip!
bloody hell, first contact into .AU - that is totally amazing. I love watching your videos, you really make the hobby exciting and interesting. Inspiring video. Thank you so much.
@@alzeNL thank you so much! That was fun and making those New Zealand and Aussie contacts at the end was probably some of the most fun I’ve ever had playing radio.
Great to see you at my one of many old haunts from when I lived in Rhode Island! My friends lived off West Shore Rd there and we'd be out there eating doughboys, clam cakes & quahogs at Iggy's or partying on the beach at all hours. Can't wait for the next one! I'm actually traveling 'back East' in Maryland this week with my G90 and you just made me set my alarm to try some early 20m from the lake out here. Enjoying your great DX & mast in the sand!
Great time on the beach Walt. No beach here in NV, but I was going to give POTA a try (my first) this morning. Of course, the first rain we've had in MONtHS came through this morning. So, first POTA will have to wait.
Walt, a great video - glad for your success! You were adding a 3rd number when giving a signal report. My understanding was that 3rd number was for CW signal reports. As always, your videos are time well spent watching. KQ4IXD
Hey Walt, that was a fantastic demonstration of DX with 20 watts. I have been a little reserved in attempting to check in to the Southern Cross DX Net. Now, I may give it a go. The worst thing that could happen is nobody picks me up. Take care, VE9NHS.
Great video Walt, and thanks for the early morning DX tips and frequency. My family and I are heading to Ocean City, MDin August and I’m going to play radio on the beach using your Coastal 20 antenna so people don’t end up tripping over a counterpoise.
Very good Walt. I am in Boston ,NY and it super MUGGY as well. now 90F . Steam bath ! Great DX contacts ! Early morning is great time. I do about same 1/2 wave vertical on DX commander 10 meter pole. I did a fold back at top . Learned that from Lord Callum . That how is does the 40 meter wire. I have home made UNUN 49:1 rated KW. Put solar on that battery and go longer . fill up the log book. later in the day 15 meters been hot in NY lately . FT8/FT4 /JS8 call all been great . Great beach ! the East coast has great beaches up and down ! Me and my girlfriend love them . Bring your cooking stuff make Breakfast and lunch . With the good view ,it's great ! Make coffee and play HAM radio ! ! 73

This was really fun to watch. You were on fire. Since watching you Ive started working low power. Love my G90 and worked France with my QMX 5 watts on CW. Thanks for your videos. 73s
Walt, great QSO’s - you really owned that VK/ZL net. If your battery was heading south, you could easily plug into the ciggy-butt lighter socket - 20 watts won’t do a thing to your Jeep battery. Stay classy, my friend- maybe I’ll work you up there. Gonna be on OBX next week. 73, Mike K3CXG who fat!
Amazing Walt! I’m out on the ANZSA net on weds and Fri.. love making those DX contacts! I’m using the ATAS-120a and get great result.. but am going to chuck up an EFHW for 20m after seeing your great results.. shame you couldn’t tx with that fairground tower! Keep safe and would love to work you in the bands soon…
Digging up some good contacts. I got a guy in Finland the other night on 20M. It was rough and then suddenly the band opened for about 10 seconds and then crashed again. We got callsigns exchanged anyhow! My dipole is set up favoring to the west so it was off the back side.
I agree that you can work the world with 20 watts and some wire. I have managed to get SSB contacts in Slovenia, Serbia, Russia, Austria, France, Italy, Belize, Argentina, and various other countries I can't think of without looking at my log. I also have FT8 contacts with Japan and a few European countries. I also know you can make a contact from about 630 miles away with 1 watt on HF when conditions allow.
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES I have only used my G90 portable three times for POTA activations, but I am finding it to be a great portable radio. If I had more disposable income I would probably buy another one strictly for portable use.
Hi Walt. I was at Rocky Point State Park on Thursday and Brenton Point State Park on Friday and hoping to see you out there. I was QRP with an AX1 antenna. Rocky Point was a failed activation with only one contact, I only had about 30 minutes before I had to be in Newport. Was able to activate Brenton Point to include one DX contact.
@@w4id676 wish I could have been out there. I’m putting in some long hours during the week so my radio time is the weekend. I need to check out Brenton Point.
I was at Brenton Point today for the kite festival. Wow it was amazing! There had to be a hundred kites in the air and some were absolutely enormous! Later we sat on the sea wall and watched the sailboats and ocean waves. It’s such a beautiful place!
Thanks, that antenna setup is a vertical halfwave for 20 meters. I purchased the one I’m using here but have also built the same antenna using wire and a 49:1 unun. I go into more detail on the antenna in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EDU7b8ADBiA.htmlsi=KHT9HWk24TCSQDby
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES A pleasure for your response. -Some help please. For an 11 meter band, what size would you advise me to try? On a vertical rod, half a wave or a full wave? Will a 1/9 balum work for me? -I would love to receive your good advice if it is not too much to abuse you. Thank you and good health.
Great video Walt. I enjoyed it very much. Just one question, what time in the morning was it? Keep up the great work. Who says 20 watts isn't enough?? 73. John Aloi Sr - WB3HPE
Thanks! I got out there about 5:30am Eastern US time. The Southern Cross Net usually gets going around 6am and goes pretty well for a couple hours. 73 my friend
Very cool content... I have the same set-up and would love to try this. I'm near a large lake, that is not salt water, and I am wondering if the water body would allow for DXing at 20watts on the Southern Cross Net. What do you think Walt, would I get out that far from central Ohio next to a lake?
Thanks! I don’t think you would get the full saltwater effect but you would still get the advantage of a great signal takeoff by the water and being away from noise. Give it a try!
Hi Walt, another great & fun filled video. Each time you add such excitement to this wonderful hobby of ours! I love my G-90 too which works great for virtually all of my usages. Do you still use your FX4CR? I’ve used mine for the recent POTA’s with success, albeit the unit got quite warm… BTW: I love the t-shirt. Stay well & safe my friend. Prayers continue for the Mrs’. 🙏 73. AC3EA
Thank you so much George! I actually sold the FX-4CR a couple months ago. It’s a great little radio but I just wasn’t using it. I just love my G90. Thanks you very much for the continued prayers my friend! When I saw that shirt online I had to have it. I’m not sure if you guys have watched “The Chosen” but the portrayal of Simon Peter is my favorite. 73 my friend
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES The Chosen is an incredible series, which we enjoy! BTW: When you sold the FX4CR, did you give the purchaser the “Red Tassel” too? 🤣 ‘73
Wonderful contact with NZ! Any chance you could explain the /W1 ? at 11:49 You mentioned being able to give the hunters RI and I don't know anything about that. I been thinking of doing a very similar thing for 10m with my spiderbeam. Glad to see it works so well. KE9AGJ 73
Thanks for watching! Great question and I actually just did a video explaining it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KXly771DtaA.htmlsi=Mj5jqlJHEhWZ0MC8
I hate to tell you my friend but the sky over your head is foretelling of MORE RAIN for you in the 24 hours. Those cotton ball clouds are a dead giveaway.
KK7SWB Hi Walt, so for the EFHW vertical, the length i should be using a little over 16 feet of wire for the radiating element- i am confused bc you are using the 10m mast- can you please explain- thank you as always for your videos!
