Thank you Kevin for your videos. You are one of the very few USA English speaking RU-vid video makers who are articulating correctly and slowly enough so that the rest of the world, outside the USA, can understand it all from the first time listening to what is being explained. You are a born teacher! I hope that you can continue to make such a good instructive videos for ham radio community, and therefore I will become a (small) patron. And to the rest of the world: please join me in becoming a (even small) patron of Kevin. Thanks Kevin - Paul ON7ARF.

I hadn't thought about that. I'm glad to know it. When I was young I tended to speak too fast and spent many years consciously slowing my speech down.

Great job Kevin. You taught me something about automatic gain control as well. Still deciding on buying this radio and your videos are helpful. Nice talking with you on 80 meters a couple weeks back just after you acquired that radio. 73 from K6TJO!

Yes ! My answer to how to configure my Icom IC 705 to the Raspberry PI to run digital modes. This is exactly what I needed for my setup. I really liked your description about using the filtering with Flrig and being able to control the radio remotely. I already got my usb cable and I am able to change the radio through the computer. This is awesome, great job on the video, I hope that you will be able do more videos on enhancing the capabilities of the IC 705 and being able to use the Raspberry PI to do more with the 705. Thank you. Eric

I love the conversational style of your videos. They're not only relaxed and friendly, but they're extra educational because in addition to the primary subject (connecting the IC-705 to a Linux computer), you also convey an enormous amount of very useful supplementary information - use of bandpass filtering in Fldigi to prevent interference from strong adjacent signals, setting audio output to avoid ALC distortion, and even good operating practices of tuning at low power not on top of someone and identifying yourself after tuning. When you finished with Fldigi and said, "Now for what everyone is interested in...", I thought for sure you were going to say JS8Call. FT8 is dead to me. 🤣

We also can record/playback QSO from/to the rig. Use Audacity or any sound recorder and select the audio device related to the rig. TO TX the playbacke audio we neeed to push TX key or PTT.. Thank you.

Hi Kevin, I couldn't get HamPi to work with RPi- so I went back to basic setup. I am just loading WSJT-X and FLdigi/Flrig from source. Your explanations are clear and understandable. Thanks for your perceptive need for more information. Right on topic. :-) VE6KBI

Kevin, At 7:45 you say WSJT-X doesn't support changing the CI-V. Well, the workaround is to tell WSJT-X to use FlRig as the radio, and not an IC-705. The bonus here is that you can send additional commands to the rig using FlRig while WSJT-X is operating. (Just be careful not to send conflicting commands to FlRig that confuses WSJT-X.)

Wonderful videos as always Kevin, thank you! :) Just some questions about the Rpi solution. Do you managed the current draw of the Rpi or do you run it as by the default settings? Portable use and battery drain thoughts... And do you know about any kind of Audio DSP programs to run with the Rpi? (Would like to use it with my FT-817, a sweepable BPF, Notch etc. would make wonders. Those IF filters are way to expensive. I know of the SotaBeams Laser filter but... if the Pi is already in the system...yeah.. just another thought.) / SA5VOX

Thanks for making this video! I had a question about the CI-V address “spoofing” - when you tell it to use the IC-7300 address, and tell your software to think it is an IC-7300, are you still able to use the VHF/UHF capabilities of the IC-705? (ie, would 2m FT-8 work, etc) Or does the software say “oh this is an IC-7300, so we’re not even gonna try to tune that high”?
@loughkb
@loughkb 3 года назад
As far as I have seen, it does work. If the software tries to set a frequency out of the 7300's range, the 705 just goes there without complaint.

Great video Kevin. Something I didn't know until i watched, Ray Novak in Josh HRCC video, pronounce it ci-5. Apparently the V stand for version 5. Did you have any luck with HamPi and audio system.
@loughkb
@loughkb 3 года назад
Yeah, roman numeral for 5. A broad range of people from many countries watch these though, so I usually state things verbatim to avoid confusion. I can't think of any reason you'd have any trouble with hampi. It's using ALSA and pulse just like debian, which raspbian is built from.

Thanks for another great video. While I managed to get WSJT-X running fine from a PC, the RaspberryPi unfortunately stubbornly displays a Hamlib error when I try to connect it to the IC-705. I've replicated all the settings on the radio and inside WSJT-X that you suggest ... but no dice ... always the Hamlib error on attempting to connect to the radio ... can't figure this one out yet.
@loughkb

What's the error? Is hamlib installed? sudo apt-get install libhamlib2
@edwardhammond1624
@edwardhammond1624 3 года назад
@@loughkb Hamlib was there. I did eventually get it running on the Pi, WSJT-X and then JTDX. All I can say is that it required sucessive reboots and reselecting the right settings. :-) Thanks for your great videos.

Yep. You can probably build a few things from source to get the latest upstream support. However, across the landscape, most people are running distros that are a year or more old. So I went for the approach that will have the broadest application.

Turn on snap to grid or snap to, in whatever software you're using. Or if it's intermittent, maybe ask the software companies tech support about it.

As of 12/30/20, WSJT-X v2.2.2 - amd64 installation from the Princeton U. pulsar server appears to have broken dependencies on Linux Mint 20.2 and Ubuntu 20.10. Wsjt-x v.2.3.rc2 does install, but will die on 1/30/20. Ahhh, the wonders of Linux. --N2GX
