Hey guys! Here is my updated mobile rig! I’ve done a few changes since you’ve all last seen it! Switched some antennas around and changed some things inside! Hope you all like it! 👍🏻
i am so jealous of this. I dont have a license yet but found out about ham radio about a year ago and already have learned much. Now i am trying to find a date to take the test for the license.
Sick looking rig. I had an old old V1 for ages until I finally gave it to a family friend. They have fantastic support and are all around a good company. Its really neat to see all the new features they have. I think SDR++ is perfect for a tablet. I have it on my phone and it feels a bit too cluttered with the small screen.
I know what you mean! That’s why I created this little compartment out of wood and wrapped it in vinyl, Just so I could drill all the holes I wanted and move stuff around! 😂 if you got the room and time, I’d highly recommend creating your own!
Nice setup. I don't know why so many have hearburn over this. HF mobile is challenging and fun. If you think this is overkill you should see the VW GTI with the mega vhf rover station inside. Its an engineering marvel.
Hello from Phoenix, Arizona. This is some cool stuff I love gadgets. I don’t have my ham license. I’ve been looking at GRMS lately very powerful 50 W radios that you can put in your car. They work on the repeater system and you don’t have to take a test. You need a license but it’s a 10 year license for $35 coverage your whole family. I’m sure you know all about it, anyway, looking forward to more videos
I used to love listening to scanners as a kid growing up in Phoenix. I would listen to aircraft as well, but since Phoenix went digital, I cannot figure it out. I spent $700 on a digital radio only to sell it a couple years later, cause I could not figure out how to get it to work. I even had the place I bought it from program, but I could not understand the transmissions. It sounded like it was garbled. I also didn’t know how to follow a call. I used to be really simple. They had a channel chase as they called it, which was channel one and then all the precincts had their own channel when emergency traffic came out let’s say for the seventh precinct they would switch to channel one and they would work the traffic on channel one and you could hear all sides of the Conversation, if you have any knowledge on how I could do this again I’d be happy to pay for your time. Thank you.
Sounds like encryption. If you got a digital scanner that does p25 phase one and two, and you still hear garbled mess… it’s encryption, but there’s plenty of other things to listen too, Look up radioreference.com and put in your county. It will show all the local frequency you can put into your scanner
What a nice setup. Could you let us know where you procured the mounts for the phone, radio, tablets., I have a 2014 Ford F-350 and I would like to do a similar set up. Thanks in advance.
Interesting… I’ve ran mine for several hours straight and it seems rather fine, warm to the touch but nothing hot.. maybe yours doesn’t have thermal pads inside it
Very nice setup! I just got myself the same scanner recently. This video got me thinking about the SDR too. What kind of splitter you are using and how much it weakens the signsl?
@@SakariNythank you! I used to run a splitter but everything has its own antenna now! The sdr uses the chameleon telescopic whip, it’s on a quick disconnect so when I’m not using it I store it inside the truck
So if I have followed you correctly. You got messing around with CB radio, got bit by the cb bug. And found your self escalating to ham radio. That's what happend to me too. The drug of CB that's how it starts, just 4 watts and 40 channels that's all it takes to get hooked for life. Now it's crossband this HF that and some ISS when you think you can get away with it. Good videos 73
Battery cut-off switch is always a great idea, but the location is not good. In a bad accident it could make contact with your left knee. I have scene this with older snow plow controls before they switched to the remote control
Great update. I just started playing with my RTL SDR dongle, too. It blows my mind. Maybe i missed it. Which antenna do you use for that? And an awesome idea putting a tablet mounted in there for it. And good idea with the kill switch. Keep those projects coming, brother!
Thanks! The sdr is connected to the 17ft chameleon, works super well, I was parked by the water, able to hear stations from England coming through on 20m band
@jackbarker2175 crap, that's awesome. I also threw a 17footer on my roof but a crappy Chinese one and tried to tune for 11m... no luck. But for listening for the SDR? Genius.
Neat to have on a towtruck if you do 60 plus hrs a week and nobody uses your truck….id like it. Gotta be in truck most of the time or for a living for me do do this…I got 1 25watt anytone with a whip on my expedition…that’s it. I carry phone.🍷
I’m trying to do the same thing but instead of a tablet I’m trying a Chinese android head unit. Yeah, they’re cheap and not the best quality, but I can root it and run software on it. So I have my SDR wired up to my head unit. Lol.
Wowie! That's not only a nice truck with cool accessories But the radio equipment puts it at a whole other level. Question: To operate the bear traker and sdr on the same antenna can you operate at the same time and what type adapter and/or connector did you use? Thanks for sharing, KO4HPC 73
They are for listening only, not transmit, The chameleon antenna there, is on a quick disconnect, So I only have it on there when I’m parked using sdr++ anyway! I keep it stored in the back seat when I’m not using it
@@jackofalltrades28 But even just for listening the antennas and feedlines are located close to the engine compartment where most of the vehicle noise is generated. JMHO, FWIW, YMMV, etc.
@@mikemcdonald5147 A. Antennas need to be as far from a noise source as possible. The engine compartment is where most of the noise is generated. B. RF safety concerns by having a transmit antenna close to the operator, though if listening only isn't an issue.
WTF @ 0:30, you don't put two antennas on same bloody mount. Battery Isolator above knees, nope, bad location in so many ways. You have a mountain of gear, all facing the drivers seat, DISTRACTED DRIVER SITUATION.
First off, they are listening antennas. So it doesn’t matter, second off, I’ve got 2 battery isolators. Third off, vehicles not some small Toyota Corolla, plenty of room, everything mounted perfectly, and far from distracted driving, because there’s something called prioritizing, If I’m driving I’m looking at the road, not my equipment lol
@@jackofalltrades28 First- If you think that suddenly makes it correct, please stay off the air as you far from radio wise. Secondly, so what, put them in logical location not above your knee with dangle-berries on it. Thirdly, if its turned on while vehicle is in motion, its a distration, especially when your batting yourself over the tablet screen and SDR. Happy to call BS on your claim.
I have worked in a police cruiser solo and never had issues with three radios and the LEERN system used in my state. It also helps having specific training in utilizing comm gear running solo in the military. It all comes down to training and more training.
It’s quite common in NATO vehicles as well as a lot of Red Cross vehicles. Should attend the Hamvention in Ohio in May, there are several wild ones who have turned their vehicles into porcupine rides with several dozen antennas installed on their cars.
