In this video I summarize the rebuilding of a UHF repeater/remote base, including two mods to a Kenwood TM-271A for use with an Arcom repeater controller.
This repeater is solar powered and contained in a weather tight enclosure for installation in an underground radio vault.

Is your vhf remote base uhf link seperate from the repeater?

Hey Robert - The radios on that peak are all connected to a single controller. There is a UHF receiver and transmitter for the repeater, and a 2 meter xcvr (the TM271-A) as the "remote base" 2 meter radio. Then, at a separate location on the other side of the county I have a 220 mhz system, configured almost the same. From there, I use a UHF xcvr as a half-duplex link to the the system shown in the video.

Still using the 5 step frequency, it is a very old step for Thailand. This era, he uses the step frequency. 12.5 all together Which is a more basic and more advanced step with much better performance The system you are building and admiring it now is old.

why need one radio to scan? is that only a link? hope its not connected to the duplexer

The 2 meter radio is connected to the controller as a remote base. There are no controllers that provide for scanning of remote base radios, so I modified the radio to do so. Imagine if you were to drive to a mountain top with a 2 meter mobile and you wanted to scan the band to listen for activity. I am doing the same thing, except remotely via the "remote base" functionality of the system.

@@ShawnDienhart if that ever becomes an issue (and I'd do this just in case anyway) use a big thing of silica gel and crack the top open before you shut the lid of the drum. Once every 6 months to a year put the gel in a pan in the oven at its lowest temp for a good couple hours to dry it back out for reuse, might want to get two batches of gel so you have a fresh batch ready and don't have to drive back and forth... "Cook" a batch of gel the day before you plan on using it. www.amazon.com/Premium-Silica-Desiccant-Industry-Standard/dp/B01BLYLUSY/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=bulk+silica+gel&qid=1620365627&sr=8-3

@@ShawnDienhart could even pour the gel into something more malleable that can breath well like a small pillow case, beings things are packed so "tight as a drum" in there.
