Ham Radio Yaesu 857d install in 2012 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner

This is how I installed my Yaesu 857d radio in my 2012 Toyota Tacoma Dual Cab PreRunner. I didn't want any holes that would be visible if I were to remove the radio and sell the truck, so I came up with an installation that would not have this problem.

I have a 2010 Tacoma quad cab with Tule racks - I installed the radio (Yaesu 8800-R) under the drivers seat - remote speaker in the same place, head unit with velcro in your alternative location. Microphone on the little black cover below the AC vent. Mag mount diamond on the roof top with wire tucked into the roof rack. Great....Insane range. I also have a dual battery set up (Stinger 200 amp isolator). The radio connects to a fuse block hooked up to the aux battery (Kinetik Blu-1200 AGM). I never worry about running out of juice. Cross band repeat all day...many days on second battery. Great set up for community service events, hiking or anywhere you need to extend the range of a HT. Thanks for sharing. Great set up for the Tacoma!

I am interested in the cross band configuration; my van battery is an 80 amp/h, the radios I use is mobile kenwood TM-710GA, Hts: Kenwood TH-D74A and icom ID-51A, basically I would need a list of parts needed to run it the same way you do, locally it is hard to find some help. note the Kenwood HT can remote control the mobile, but this is only to shut it down of course. My snarios are overnight trips into the Nevada Desert in remote areas and north of the state. I am a new ham. got my license 2+years ago but just got into it recently for real, before I took a hiatus because work. 73, KI7CSI

Follow the wires from the battery back to the firewall.. you could have brought the power in through there also, a little less wire to run. I have a 2011 Tacoma Access Cab and will be installing a 2m/440 dual bander soon. Thanks for video.

I like column shift vehicles, because you can take out the stock center console and make your own to make the radios look like they were on a police center console

This was excellent, I just got some of the details worked out to install my radio. Will take some of the advice on the electrical side of this, thanks

Nice video, I was looking for someone installing the same radio I am going to buy... If you want to change the way the antenna cable goes to your cabin, there's a grommet behind the plastic bins (where you installed the radio) that are higher and better for keeping the water out. I used them for my CB...

Sir, an excellent job in your install, and, very informative too. Now that you've had your YAESU FT-857D installed, and operational for a while, have you had any issues with the radio, as to where you installed the head unit? I ask this because I just purchased this same unit, and in reading its installation instructions, the issue of "proper ventilation", is stated. Being that this YAESU 857-D is a high-powered radio (100W), with the head unit "covered" with the rear seating, have you experienced any kinds of issues, or that maybe you, yourself, have had second thoughts of where you installed the head unit? Other than that issue that has now surfaced in my mind, I really think you did a great job in your install. Great video. Thank you Sir.

If you still have the truck and want to change your radios location, look into a TechDeck.

I read somewhere that both positive and negative leads should be fused near the battery. I don’t remember the rationale for doing so.

I didn't put my 857 fuses close to the radio, they're under the hood.

Great video. What is the name of the chair-bolt mount w/swivel?
@ac7rt
@ac7rt 8 лет назад
I don't recall the name, but if you go to hamradio.com and type in seat mount, this is the one I used. I didn't actually buy it from hro because you can Google the manufacturer and get it direct. Note that you use the remote head kit from your radio on this mount so you'll need the remote head kit from hro.

Where did you buy the Front panel " snake" support ?????? Thanks
@ac7rt
@ac7rt 4 года назад
It's a Lido mount. You can buy directly from them but I see it a HRO as well. I recently made a few changes. I bought a Yasesu FTM-400XDR and their separation kit for the microphone wouldn't reach to the place I had my 857d. So I mounted that radio under my passenger's seat. This new radio had a different kind of ball mount looking arrangement so I had to go to the LIDO site to order a different attachment device to attach this new radio to the existing Lido mount. You may actually want to start looking at Lido to see what they have. They have mounts that you can also attach your microphone to so lots of options. I have also moved the antenna from being in the back of the truck to instead using an antenna mount that clips to the hood on the driver's side. Works well.

Where did you get your antenna for your radio? I’m installing a radio for my fire department and Im tryin to find a long antenna for it and idk what kind to get or where
@ac7rt
@ac7rt 6 лет назад
Trey Smith I got it from ham radio outlet. They can help with sizing an antenna depending on the frequencies. This was a dual band antenna for 2m and 70cm.

Pete Stark, I only do hf when I'm stationary with a portable antenna so I'm parked and just run the cable through a window or door
