FT-857D optimal RF gain and DSP control

Today I demonstrate how I set the RF gain and noise reduction on my FT-857D. The FT-897 and FT-817 work the same. The 817 has no DSP so will be noisier no matter what you do.
As you can see, sometimes, depending on conditions or how far in the noise the signal is or rather isn't, you can make the receiver pretty quiet.
Remember though you can only do this once you find a good signal, otherwise the gain will be down to low and you won't find any stations that are under the gain setting, so if you have it at S9, you won't hear anything at about S7 or under.

Good to see good use of the rf gain control. Was always taught RF Gain should always be tuned to where you just hear the signal you want with minimum other noise, then use AF gain to amplify the audio.

Thanks for your video! Very helpful for new hams such as myself (I don't get much time to play on my 857D with work and all, but people like you make my life so much easier!)

Who doesn’t have one of these radios ? Been using one for about 3 or 4 years. Great radio from AM broadcast to 440 MHZ. 👍

Yes your right, an absolute classic, and great for home, vehicle, portable box because of it's size and all around performance. As you probably know these are no longer made and command big bucks to buy one.

Wow, I used your setting suggestions, night and day difference. My 857 was noisey and horrid on rx, now it's a pleasant to listen to as my FTdx-101. Excellent tip. Maybe also suggest turning control setting 080 from sql/rf to just rf-gain, so can get full rf gain range. Thanks again

I installed the BHI DSP filter to my FT-817 and it makes setting up the radio much easier.

I miss my FT-817nd. I usually ran the long BHI DSP noise reduction around 3-4. The secret is turning down RF gain.

@@vironpayne3405 Yes I agree attack noise from the antenna in first. The BHI get rid of the hash you hear on receive.

I personally don’t think it’s any noisier than any hf rig.

You do well. Turning down the RF gain is the big, BIG, secret. I actually got a narrower 2.3K Collins filter to improve weak signal RCV and TX punch when necessary. In this video I take three minutes to tweak my RF gain as far down as I cared to go. With a net and bad band conditions (S9+ noise) I wanted to sneak up and make sure I wasn't missing any readable stations. Most of the other noise tools I run fairly light so as to not lose any intelligility. I have a mild high frequency hear loss. The only high setting around 90-100 is on the NB. DNR is usually around 3, and occasionally as high as 10. Audio Hi Cut about 2.770kH anf Hi Pass 460Hz-520Hz. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q1CJfAQ15ds.html

Thanks! Great details on your setup, thanks for info. Same here on the DNR, I set it as low as possible also, about a 4, just enough to eliminate most of the hiss, any more than that as you know, the intelligibility suffers a lot. I only go higher when the noise is so bad I can't hear the voice. Thanks for the comment.

You mention in the heading DSP option. Is that something done at the factory when ordered, or it it something you can do? I'm new and looking at one a guy is selling "Brand new" in box. Being that in new I may not need to worry about the digital right now, but curious to know if I can upgrade it later. Thanks for the video!
@hamradiocomms

DSP is included in the FT-857D model not the old 857. What isn’t included is the TCXO necessary for some digital modes on some bands. Hi, You can buy Yaesu brand or ebay Chinese equivalent which are a fraction of cost and very good also. Its just a plug in board u can add yourself.

My 857 receive audio sounds a bit raspy/nasal. Have not found the right settings to make it sound as good as yours. I am using an external speaker. The RF gain helps but it also reduces the volume.
@hamradiocomms
@hamradiocomms 3 года назад
Hi.. without hearing it I wouldn't be able to know why. Speaker placement makes a difference, how does FM broadcast radio sound? Talk radio should sound perfect. If it doesn't then it's not the SSB audio. Make sure your NR isn't too high, turn it off see what happens. Makes sure everything is off, NB, Notch, NR, etc.. Be sure no optional filters are on, etc..
@n1kkri
@n1kkri 3 года назад
@@hamradiocomms with everything off the SSB is nasal raspy sounding. AM is OK. FM is OK. I had this rig in the car for years using a cheap Radio shack speaker and it always sounded ok. I just brought it into the house. Will try a few other external speakers just in case I have a unusual response. I am using an old Hallicrafters R-42 speaker. I use a transformer to reduce the high Z down to 8 ohms. The FT-857 compared to my IC-706MKIIG always had audio that favored the high frequency range. Will try a different external speaker.
@n1kkri
@n1kkri 3 года назад
I tried a couple other speakers and not much of a difference. I noticed if I adjust the IF offset I can make the audio sound really nice. In LSB if I turn the knob about 6 or 7 clicks clock wise the raspy/nasal sound is gone and the audio sounds perfect. It add some base to the audio and sounds much better.
@n1kkri
@n1kkri 3 года назад
I did a little searching and I found someone else complaining about tinny audio on LSB. He fixed his by going to "menu No. 015, the receiver carrier insertion point for LSB. If it is wrongly positioned it can cut out (or in the other direction, boost) the bass. The default position is zero and it can be adjusted either way in 10 Hz steps." I adjusted it on the "+" side and when I hit 100Hz the audio started to clean up and sound better. I increased it more and the audio improved. I settled around 200-250Hz and the audio on LSB sounds much better. No more raspy/tinny sound. No distortion. That was a good tip.

@@n1kkri Thanks for the info .. yes the IF shift is great when you have nearby interfering signals to quiet or soften them.. In this video I went over the RF gain and NR to reduce noise. Perhaps I should do another on how to reduce or git rid of interfering noises like pulse from vehicles, power line pops, and whines.. the NB and Notch filters work great for that, for interfering signals the IF shift is useful, using Narrow filters on SSB helps to reduce bandwidth and reduces need to use IF shift sometimes..

Do you 857 d strictly as a base station or do you put in vehicle and if so what kind of antenna do you use?
@hamradiocomms
@hamradiocomms 7 лет назад
I don't use it as a base station as I have other less menu driven radios for that, though it does work well for that role. I don't use it mobile yet, but have it installed in a portable box. I have a video on my channel of the portable box with the FT-857D in it. I have since upgraded to version 2.1 portable box and will be doing a video soon of that. For antennas, I use a MFJ-2340 40 meter mini mobile antenna on the portable box, and other hamstick types, but also run wires out for endfed and dipoles with the portable box. They all work great with the FT-857 but all require a tuner except my tuned dipoles with current balun. 73, Ed N1UHF

Shouldnt have the power supply above the radio. Both may overheat. Read the warnings in the user manual!
@hamradiocomms

I would never put a power supply on on a radio. That is an auto tuner and produces no heat. Also there are feet for air to circulate above the radio. BTW unlike many people I actually read the user manual.

That is the LDG FT meter that plugs into the FT-857 or FT-897 transceivers and displays much more info and better than the Yaesu radio screen. They also have a jumbo size version of this meter.
