The repeater (UHF) is something hams use for extending range of communication. The HF frequencies refract (bounce, bend, skip) off the ionosphere ( a charged layer high in the sky) hence dad talking to staitons overseas on 14Mhz (20m band). Now 430 Mhz does NOT bounce off the ionosphere it passes thru it (hence it being used for satellite coms) it only travels on earth "line of sight" eg to the horizon, but it is good because the antenna required is small (remember what you learnt in lesson 1 - higher freq is a shorter wavelength). So to extend range for radios like your Baefeng we put an antenna up high (to extend how far radios can "hear/see" it and this recieves a signal and retransmits it to extend range. Dad uses the UHF 430 Mhz (70cm band) repeater over the short distance from the house to garage, to talk to and control his set up in the garage and gain access to the Yaesu HF (High frequency) "rig" to chat overseas!! 73 de VK2AOE in Australia.

Your father is one of those people who not only understands what something does, but why and how it does it. Younger people need to look to the older crowd and pay attention, and learn from them. The class of license indicates "expertise" and privileges afforded to hams. The higher the class the more frequencies you can operate on and the higher power you are allowed (hence your dad running 1 kilowatt - 1000 watts from his remote setup). QTH is the Q code a letter series of codes to abbreviate Morse transmissions (but now also used by hams for voice and general chit chat which hams call rag chewing). QRS means send morse slower....QRT mean STOP sending (there are 100's of them). Duplex is 2 way send receive for a radio link. FULL duplex means you can send and receive like a telephone BOTH ways at the same time (usually means a separate transmitter and receiver on different frequencies to allow the 2 way simultaneous exchange). The 160m band is 1.8MHz ....160m is the wavelength (the length of 1 cycle of the radio wave). The lower the frequency the LONGER the antenna hence your dad having such (dare I say) large erections!! A magnetic loop (mag loop) allows a smaller antenna for lower frequencies (such as the aforementioned 160m band - also called "top band" by hams). Yes you Dad = cool. 😎

It is fine to listen / scan VHF/UHF , which is what you were doing at the end of the video. You just can't press the TALK button without being a licensed amateur radio operator like your dad and you can only Talk on authorized frequencies for amateur radio operators.
