Upon arrival in Hambantota, a town once a sleepy fishing village and now a commercial hub, we decide to forego the planned excursions and instead immerse ourselves in the local culture. With the midday heat soaring, we skip the nearby national park, saving our wildlife adventures for an upcoming African safari, and choose to connect with the local community instead.
Navigating through the port, we encounter numerous locals offering tours, but after some negotiation, we secure a reasonable rate for a personal tour with a local tuk-tuk driver. This decision leads us to unexpected discoveries about Hambantota's transformation and gives us a genuine glimpse into everyday life here.
Our tuk-tuk ride through the town introduces us to vibrant markets, friendly locals, and the simple yet rich life of our driver, who kindly invites us to his home. This intimate experience offers us a look at his family's daily life, complete with homegrown fruits and warm hospitality, highlighting the authentic spirit of Sri Lanka.
This episode is not just about sightseeing but about understanding and appreciating the heart of a place through its people. From spontaneous interactions to heartfelt welcomes, Hambantota shows us that sometimes, the best travel experiences come from the unplanned and the unexpected.

I love that you go for the local / non tourist route - I usually do that too. It seems that good attracts good - you've been very fortunate with your 'off piste' choices - do you ever worry that you made a wrong choice? I've had a couple of what I think of as 'close shaves' when travelling like this, but it certainly beats being a bus with 50 other cruisers that you see every day 😀 I look forward to Colombo - I was there for 24 hours back in the 80's so the only thing I remember is that our hotel and the airport, everyone was trying to sell beautiful sapphire jewellery :)

We like to travel independently, we are only few hors in each port and I do not want to spend it waiting for people to get on and off the bus, following a flag and listening to a Wikipedia in bad English, I rather explore and get to know the locals. People everywhere are nice, you smile they smile back. When you travel you have to be aware of the surroundings, Thanks again!

Tressa, I am so glad that I found your channel! I’m a bit behind but should be caught up soon. I am also enjoying the Royal Caribbean Ultimate World Cruise coverage by Mike and Nancy on Living Phase 2 and Leslie and Roy on Point My Soul North. It’s interesting to get different perspectives of the same locations. But I truly admire you and Zarko for having the courage to get off the beaten path. Sometimes I am a little nervous for you but you always seem to come out okay. It was so heartwarming to accompany you to your drivers home and to see the pride he felt for his home and family. I felt for you in that heat and humidity. Here in Houston, Texas this summer it has been in the high 90’s to 100 F with high humidity making heat index 112 F at times. I hide inside most of the time. So it’s been so nice to be able to experience your travels from the comfort of my home. Thanks so much for sharing.

Thank you so much for your kind words and for following along with our journey! It’s great that you’re enjoying the different perspectives from Mike, Nancy, Leslie, and Roy too-it really does show how unique each experience can be. We’re definitely not afraid to get off the beaten path. We live overseas and travel a lot, and in our experience, people are generally peaceful and kind with only a few exceptions. We’ve found that as long as you don’t stick out or look for trouble, trouble won’t find you. Sri Lanka, in particular, is one of the safest countries we’ve visited. The people there, being mostly Buddhist, have such an incredible sense of humanity. Actually, this winter we’ll be spending 3 months in Sri Lanka, so stay tuned for those videos-we’re excited to share more with you! Stay safe and cool in that Texas heat

Nice little adventure. I wonder if the DJI has an adjustment to allow for quicker focus...I noticed some blurr as it was trying to focus during the drive.

In this video, what you're observing while we're driving is known as motion blur. This phenomenon occurs because the video consists of individual images, referred to as frames, displayed sequentially. When there's rapid movement-either from driving or moving the camera-motion blur becomes more pronounced. Typically, we shoot our footage at 30 frames per second (fps). However, when driving, we often switch to 60 fps. This higher frame rate allows us to slow down the footage or extract individual frames to use as still photos, as demonstrated in this video. The playback speed of the video, or the production speed, is also crucial. We prefer to render our videos at 24 fps. This speed is commonly used in cinema and gives a look that we appreciate, despite the increased motion blur when driving or moving the camera quickly. We use the Osmo Pocket 3, an exceptional camera that can shoot at 120 fps in 4K resolution and 240 fps in HD. Its built-in gimbal also helps to stabilize camera movements. As we continue our journey around Africa, we'll have more opportunities to film on sea days. We plan to create a video discussing the camera and our video-making process. Zarko, a true camera enthusiast with enough cameras to start his own store, particularly enjoys using this equipment. We're so impressed with the Osmo 3 that we purchased two-now, each of us carries one, and we leave the camera bag on the ship. Over in Bulgaria, we tip only for top-notch service, and this was definitely one of those times. Zarko, being Bulgarian, he's not a fan of the obligatory tipping culture you see in the U.S. He thinks it should really mean something when someone goes the extra mile.
