Since you asked, this loyal viewer is from The Netherlands ✋. This video was great, maybe I will give the crystal swap a try on my Seiko sarb017. Don't think I'll have the guts though.
Thanks Guy! I'd love to visit there some day! If you've not swapped a crystal before, I would highly recommend you do it on a lesser watch like a cheapy Seiko 5. It might be worth buying a second hand one that has a scratched up crystal to see if you can "restore" it! That way, you won't have to worry too much about making a mistake. :)
I swapped from a Seiko mineral crystal to a crystal times blue ar coated one on my snk. I actually thought the reflections were worse with the crystal times one. Blue looks kinda cool though. Flat Vs domed is where it's at, I find flat with no ar a lot more readable than domed with ar. I am a new sub, really enjoy your videos!
Iam Madman from Slovakia. Very nice video, i like your "labour" with modifications... your commentary, selfjokes :) With AR it looks better , not so shiny. For me is it very informative and entertaining way to learn things from horology . Thank you
Bratislava is there! haha! Have you ever seen a ridiculous movie called Euro Trip? They made fun of Bratislava as being extremely poor. It was obvoiusly just a joke but that movie was hilarious and it made me want to visit there! Thank you for your kind words! I appreciate it a lot!
Hey, please, can you give me advice which AR sapphire crystal buy for Hamilton Khaki Field 42mm? I mean dimensions, thickness, etc. Thank you so much! :-)
Whatsssaaap! Just to reiterate, this swap works with the 38mm black dial version as well as their 38mm quartz watches using the same case. Also, I didn't see the lint on the gasket while recording. I thought I got it off lol. I've since removed and cleaned the gasket. Oh and during the video, I said that "this is the first time I'm doing this". I meant that it was the first time I'm doing it to THIS exact watch :p Have a good day, y'all! instagram.com/minitwatch
Looks great, still wondering why Hamilton doesn't do the AR coating, I think they do on some of their models ... It can't save them all that much money, maybe it harkens back to the old domed acrylic crystals for the vintage vibe? I see some ppl here commenting they like the reflections, I have a black dial and can say I don't mind too much, but would have preferred some AR
Perhaps so. Or perhaps that doing so would make more expensive ones less appealing. Who knows but I do know that I couldn't stand the reflections on the black dial version and swapping the crystal out completely changed the watch. There is something to be said for that vintage vibe, though. I can dig it.
The Hamilton crystals from Crydtal Times are sold out (it was a one-off batch). If you're looking for a crystal for the 38mm Hamilton, look for 32mm diameter version. Marc from LIW has wide variety.
So just an fyi, it appears that Hamilton made a change and the movement no longer “floppity flops” out. There are three mounts that secure the movement to the case that must be removed. Three brackets and three screws. You’ll need to have a pair of bent watchmakers tweezers to align the screws and get them back in. Otherwise you will have to make the drive of shame to the watch repair guy as I did. 😢
Ja ja ja ..... Tegucigalpa ..... It is Sunny ..... have two Hamilton 38s, a black dial and a Chronograph .... have not decided if changing the crystal is worth the trouble .....
Haha nice! So you and I might be one of few people who have two Hamilton 38s! The addiction is real :p I say if it's tinkering is your thing then it's absolutely worth it otherwise, probably not. I am a tinkerer. :p
I thought it turned out great, Sir.... Nice video, and great job.... Uncle Jimmy!!! I'm not gonna lie, that gave me bad flashbacks to my childhood.... omg, I almost died laughing, when he dropped the "Ehhh, you keep telling yourself that...." It's clear to me now that Uncle Jimmy sat around and smoked cigars with my Dad and Red Foreman..... Ahh yes.... I'm about 100 miles east of Minneapolis, in a tiny town you never heard of, in the frozen north woods....
Eau Claire. The "beautiful people" live in Chippewa Falls. I got transferred here for my job, so... I have around 2 more years to retire, so, I'm really just pouring the money in my 401k, and finishing out my time. I'm trying to keep a lid on my budget.
Sounds like a good day to go to the store, get a buggy, fill it it coke (everything is a coke in 'bama) and get stuff for a potluck! You have the black 38mm? Is it the H10 movement or the 2824-2?
@Minitwatch, do you know if other, non-Hamilton crystals can be used for this, seeing as they are hard to come by? I saw a Seiko crystal (S540-DD) on Long Island Watches measuring 32*3.5 mm, dome height 1.7 mm. Seems to come pretty close to the CT098 specs. Thanks.
Hi, do you know what is the crystal type for Hamilton Khaki Field H70205830 Titanium 38 mm? I'm following your video and buy CT098 for H70205830, but find out that my H70205830 diameter is 33 mm (not 32 mm). Do you have information, what model of Crystal Times that has 33 mm, with exact height and size for titanium 38 mm Hamilton? Thank you
I can't recall off hand, but have you tried single-dome sapphire crystals before? They should produce some interesting distortions and have impact on viewing angles, at least theoretically.
All of the SNZF mods I've done use Single low domes. I LOVE the way the AR coating shows up with singles. And yes, they definitely distort the dial when looking at them from the side. I actually really like that.
Canada. very nice! Okay so I made a video a while ago involving my black version. I asked Alex over at crystal times if he had one but he wasn't sure. I had to remove the stock crystal and measure its diameter and thickness with a caliper. I gave the measurements to Alex and he found something that he thought could work. It didn't quite work but I made it fit by modifying the ETA housing. Since then, he's developed a proper crystal such as the one in this video which has been specifically made for this exact watch. The only real way to find out what crystal you need, if it's not something that's already available, is to pop it out and measure.
Hello, watching from a mid sized town in the southern area of South Korea. Rainy season right now, so the temps are mildly warm and the sky is filled with low heavy clouds. Did like the look better with the AR sapphire, but wonder how much the new glass costs. I imagine there's a range, but could you give a ballpark figure? And what are the dimensions of the crystal? Thanks!
I just picked up a Murph and the singular complaint I have is the lack of AR. If I take it to a local watch store, is it likely they'll be able to do this?
minitwatch Yes! Last few years have been the best. Look for "Cerro dela silla nieve" on google images. There's another mountain i love that looks amazing with snow... i.pinimg.com/originals/71/e1/17/71e11790c2fa8d91b0ae2286a7d230ce.jpg it's called "La M".
Two Rivers, Wisconsin. I'm trying to work up the courage to swap the crystal in my Orient Mako II but then I found the Steinhart Ocean One 39 GMT and I'm just dying to get one. What useless crap that I don't really need should I waste my hard earned money on? Hmmmm decisions, decisions, decisions.
Hello sir, do you know how to regulate this movement? I used to wear seiko and its easy to regulate ( there's a +/- marked on the movement ) . How to do it on this movement?
I agree with Uncle Jimmy, completely pointless... But that said, you're now like the Bob Ross of watch crystal replacement. I just can't stop watching...
I busted my ass in my grandma's yard also but my payment was a few chocolate chip cookies and a glass of 2% milk! She did live on a main road and allowed me to put the cars I was selling in her yard and did not expect a cut of the profits even though she always asked where her storage fee was! I never liked Extreme but Bettencourt is a very talented guitarist, do you still have the guitar :)
I was in high school. I expected $$ lol. I had to pull a lot of weeds. I hated that shit! I am reminded of Karate Kid for some reason. I don't have the guitar. It kind of fell apart and I sold it to a friend. In hindsight, I wish I kept it. I could have fixed it and made it better. Darn it!!
She had a garden that was about 70 yds long and 20 yds wide and I was the only grand kid that was old enough to be productive so I got screwed pretty hard! The only good thing about going up there was she was an amazing cook and would go all out on every meal.
Hi from philippines by way of singapore here, was wondering with every crystal swap do you think it will affect the water resistance esp with dive watches like skxs or sumos? would you advise to still use it for swimming? let me know what you think..thanks
Ahhh, Oasis! I was just listening to that today! And I probably can..but I'd have to practice a lot. I used to be able to play all of Nothing Else Matters (both parts), Incubus - Drive, Foo Fighters - Everlong and My Hero, Pearl Jam - Jeremy, and of course, Stairway to Heaven haha! There are a lot of other songs I could play too but that was so long ago, that I can hardly do any of these now. Guitar was my life! Now it's a passing thought :|
How do you feel about the difference between this crystal and the last version on the black dial video? The black dial looks like it had more distortions from the dome, which i like.
