The automatics don’t require winding so the gaskets last longer preserving watch resistance. The mechanicals are cool too though.

I also own an auto Seiko 5 Sports blue, an auto Seiko Presage brown sunburst and several others ranging from a 16 dollar Casio digital classic to a Braun classic (quartz). I bought the automatic for my nephew for his senior hs graduation in May. Same reasoning; while I loved the profile of the fields mechanical much better, I bought him the other because it's more versatile as a dress watch he could also wear to interviews. I actually bought him the Khaki King as it's a bit smaller at 40mm, has a threaded crown and I love the day+date detail

Man, I didn’t think I would like that 38mm hand wind on an 8” wrist but it’s perfect. Slips under my sleeve perfectly, I usually start at 40mm however I absolutely love the feel of it, I almost forget that I’m wearing it. I have actually forgotten it’s on my wrist. At 9.5mm it’s so slim, I like winding it in the morning, there’s something about the tactile sense with it. Everything else I have is automatic, definitely changed my thoughts on mechanical pieces.
@jefferyneu3915

@TrentMorris
@TrentMorris 3 года назад
Personally I take the first few wears of a new mechanical hand-wind watch to figure out how much winding the movement requires to keep it running through the day (and in between wears if it’s part of a multi-watch rotation). For example: the first day you might give the crown a good 10 full turns, set the time, and go about your day. If it starts loosing a lot of time or stops completely during the day, you’d increase the morning winding. Then depending on how many watches you wear in frequent rotation, you’ll need to be sure to wind it if you go more than 80 hrs (~3 days) without taking it for a spin. The manual might give an exact number of turns needed to fully wind the mainspring from dead.. But if you plan to keep it ticking in between wearing it, it’ll really just take a couple weeks of experimenting before you get it dialed in. (Unintentional watch pun) Good luck! I own both watches (38mm auto & black PVD mechanical) and love them equally for different reasons.

I have both the Seiko SNK 809 and the Hamilton Khaki Automatic, and both are a terrific value for the money. Truth be told, I find myself gravitating toward the Hamilton more and more frequently when it's time to decide what to wear on a given day. My "collection" consists of fourteen timepieces that I have researched thoroughly before buying, and I am happy with all of them. "Collection" is in quotes because the most expensive watch I own was only two thousand dollars, and was a gift from a woman in China. Perhaps some day I will be in a position to afford a Rolex (in which case I would buy something else; never found Rolex watches all that exciting), but until then, I'll continue to shop for bargains, and the Hamilton Khaki Automatic is just such a watch.

Automatic, hands down! I have a Hamilton mens dress watch that my Grandmother gave to my Grandfather on Christmas day in 1948. It's been all around the world with me, and still keeps excellent time. I wanted to add another Hamilton to my collection, and as soon as I saw the Khaki Automatic, I knew that was the one. I'll probably never own a Patek Philippe or an A. Lange & Son, but honestly, this Hamilton is a bargain at twice the price. I am confident that it will still be going strong when my son bequeaths it to his son. And so it goes. If you are in the market for a rugged, reliable, handsome field watch, the Hamilton Khaki Automatic is hard to beat. Buy one -- you'll be glad you did !

The automatic is the hot set-up here, bud. Just compare the looks side-by-side. That, alone, is enough to tip the scales. And the automatic, imho, is vastly more desirable on every level, not the least of which is the eighty-hour power reserve. Eighty hours! It's definitely worth the extra dollars. I hope money isn't the deciding factor for you, because if it is, do what I did, and just wait. It's far better to own one watch that checks all of the boxes than to own two watches that you don't feel all that strongly about.

Took it on a recent out of country adventure where 50% was spent in cosmopolitan areas and 50% hiking/nature. It works with both blazers and loafers vs backpacks and boots. Also it’s not so showy to be eye candy for potential thieves depending on what part of the world you’re in. Would like to point out that the 38mm auto has long lugs. I have a 6.3 inch wrist and the 47mm lug to lug length is the max I can pull off.

I have the Khaki 2 Auto in 38mm. It’s perfect size with 80hr reserve and running +1!!! Heard it’s discontinued tho

I picked up the 42 mm Khaki Automatic in January and still can't get enough of it. I have a preference for a large watch as I just think it's a more masculine look. Also I can wear it to work with a dress shirt; totally agree with the comments about the watch's versatility. One last note is that the caseback window is gorgeous.

I would choose the 42 mm Hamilton, but for a different reason. The larger watch is able to add the minute numbers just below the chapter ring and this feature makes it easier to tell the time.

Can you review the Tudor bb 36 ? It's one of my favorite watches

Which size would be better for a 8" wrist? I like the looks of the 38mm mechanical and the 44mm auto, but I worry they might look too small and too big.

They also sell a 42mm auto

@@batmenbeyont7775 I looked at it, but the position of the date made it looks strange for my taste.

My wrist is just shy of 8 inches and I have many larger watches but the 38mm all be it smaller has a certain nostalgia to it and I find myself wearing it all the time!!! The 38mm manual khaki field is amazing - and with the trend of more and more watches going back to the smaller traditional sizes it is a pleasure to wear!!!

If I am really going into the field... which is really far from roads, I wear a Pro-Trek; BAC plus thermometer and a light at night. I have an Alpinist, but I do like that 38mm mechanical.

I own two - a 2017 Field Mechanical hand-wind-only and a 1978 military-issue Hamilton Field Watch. Both are great. The '78 has that "vintage" look because it actually is vintage now and the lume on it has faded. But if I have to go back into the sandbox overseas to hurt people again, I'm taking my G-Shock negative-LCD solar and my Marathon tritium mil-issue mechanical hand-wind that even has tritium on the seconds hand. The rest of the collection goes into the safety deposit box at the bank.

You just know that when you are in the wild, freezing to death in your tent, you will definitely forget to wind your watch! I say go auto! 😁

I agree...when I went camping in the freezing cold I wore my Seiko SRP777 and didn't have to mess with it

I have the 40 auto, 38 auto and the 38 mechanical. I love these watches, they are built above their price point by a lot. They are in my opinion the best sub 2k watches available. My blue khaki field 40 and all black 38 mechanical fight with my Tudor BB58 and my explorer for my main watch (I run pizzerias for a living so my main watches need to be able to basically get destroyed and survive).
