The flaw is in our thinking that the lume color is automatically “vintage” rather than cream. This alternative tone allows less glaring contrast to certain style of watches. Perhaps initially some makers use this tone to simulate vintage elements, but now a days this tone is an option to soften up some design elements
Hello Just Watch! Just to clarify, Matthew McConaughey did not wear that watch in the movie. He gave it to his daughter Murph, which is why it's called " The Murph Watch". McConaughey wore the Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day Date. Also, I think the Murph watch is to big. 38mm would have been perfect.
Great video. I have this same Khaki auto. Love it to pieces. I've found that it does everything well. I put it on a black leather strap when I need to dress it up and a simple nato when I'm tooling about doing stuff. It's tough and accurate, has some dings and scratches from normal use, and has quickly become a loved piece. Quick question: where did you get the light gray nato strap? Keep up the good videos. Thanks.
I’m sorry, but who cares if it’s the exact size as a prop watch in a movie. 42mm is far too big for a field style watch. Worse is that it has 52mm lug length. Damn a 1:1 scale, 38mm would’ve been an ideal size.
I do, and I bought it. I was going make this myself from two different Hamiltons (the same ones used to make the original), so the price is fine as well in comparison. I'm just stoked they made it.
I have this watch and I love it. I'm a big fan of the movie. The price is too high but the Murph looks WAY better than the standard Khaki Field. No date, better handset and a superb clean dial are strong advantages for me.
Why is everyone saying the Murph watch is too big? I'm not a huge guy and I have regular 7" wrist and 42mm field watch is not too large. If this drops to $500 I'd be interested.
Because Khaki watches have long lugs, so they will be even longer (52mm to be exact) on this model. I don't have problem wearing 42mm watch, but these lugs will stick over by wrist
@@happy_burger the murph needs to be accurate to the movie! Hamilton makes many great smaller field watches. I love my khaki mechanical but it would be weird to get the interstellar in the wrong size.
Great review. The 42 mm release was a fail and they could have sold many more at 38 or 40. I have the 38 mm khaki auto and love it. I got a 15% discount on it too. I have zero interest in getting the 42 combined with super long lugs. I find that Hamilton and longines are doing themselves a great disservice releasing many watches including vintage style ones with large dials and long lugs. Poor leadership most likely.
I bought the murph because of it's classic 1940s design and nothing else. I didn't even know it was a movie watch until after I purchased it, which made it an added bonus. After ALL when it comes to admonishments, I believe less is more.
@@maitrehg you own the dog food that you give to your dog. It's still dog food. He owned a girl's watch that he gave to his daughter. It's still a girl's watch. And by the way, you're obviously young so here's some advice. Nothing screams small dick energy like "real man" claims. Leave it out next time. It's lame and projects your insecurity.
@@annabelrobin294 what do you mean by your question? No one is saying that it's wrong that it's a girl's watch. I'm saying that IT IS a girl's watch so Hamilton sized this incorrectly.
After a long “journey” on watch passion and after changing lot of watches diameters from 36-46 mm I really believe that the iconic size for a normal men’s wrist is between 36-40 mm maximum.more than 40 mm the majority of the watches start to become uncomfortable and ...really ugly..the big watches are loosing their beauty and tharmony..I definitely prefer it at 38 mm..
I d only one watch for 3 years seiko alpinist the only reason I m drawn to murph is the same hands and simplicity, size yes I’m wondering whether I will wear it in my wrist or neck 😂 anyways worth checking it out . It’s almost sold out in like 48hrs so buzz was real . Your podcast is very nice . Appreciations !!
Great video. I’ve been trying to decide which Hamilton field watch to add to my collection since I started about 1 1/2 years ago. I’ve mentioned this on several of my videos. For my 7 7/8 wrist the 38mm looks a bit small. The Murph might be good but I think at $800 it’s priced too high. 40mm would be perfect for me. I try on any Hamilton I see in stores even those I’ve tried before just to confirm my earlier thoughts. Also I have the same feeling about a polished finish on a field watch; but for me it’s that I think a field watch should have a brushed finish. Thanks. I subscribed. Keep up the good work.
40mm is my limite, but sometimes depending of the design, some 41mm watches look also good on my wrist. I love the Khaki field Hamilton line. I have a Khaki Filed chrono, 38mm with the marvelous 7750.
I have had the 38mm khaki for three years and I love it. My only issue is lack of screw-down crown. I spend a lot of times in the woods and have accidentally raised the crown a couple of times. Once that lead to a stopped watch for a couple of hours till I noticed, and then making me late getting home for dinner. Another time lead to water in the case. The repair shop tested it and said the seals were fine. The cause of moisture was just raised crown.. I think the murph is a very good looking watch. If it were priced same as khaki and 38mm AND had a screw down crown, I would buy one. Hamilton is not likely to do all three of those things, so I probably won't
Just got my Murphy watch in. My brief review is that it’s yes a big watch. But you need to do your due diligence and actually put it on your wrist. I did and I love it. The watch is a typical hammy without a date and yes it’s quite large lug to lug. But it’s the only Hamilton field watch over 38mm that makes me smile when I look down at it. The strap is amazing. I’m mean amazing. It’s perfect for the watch. My go to guy ad dealers told me they are blowing through them I tried to call Him out on it and he pulled back his sleeve and had one one. Said his wife bought him one for his bday. Just try one on people it’s a great piece
Initially I was fine with the 42mm case diameter size, but upon knowing that it will be a 52mm lug lug measurement, that set me off. Because it is going to be big on my 6.5" wrist. 42mm case diameter and a max 48mm lug to lug for me, then I would definitely get one irregardless of the price. For watch nerds, I also understand why they really like it to be on a 40mm. Easily 40mm is the sweet spot for almost all wrist. Checkout the Hodinkee video of JJ Redick, an NBA professional basketball player. As tall as he is, he said that his max size is 42mm.
That's the main issue I have with the Hamilton brand the lug to lug is always through the roof I am looking to purchase my first Hamilton I own a Sarb065 and a Visodate (auto) and the only Hammy I can see myself owning is the Jazzmaster thinline auto but the pricetag is out of my reach for now.
I bought the Murph and at 42 it fits my wrist perfect. I’m a large man and don’t have a women’s wrist so a size 38 would be to small. Which is why I stick to Rolex and Panerai watches.
A couple of months ago you reviewed another Hamilton khaki field 38 mm watch. A grey one. I liked that watch a lot. And I wonder, which one do you prefer? That one or the one in this review? Can you motivate your answer as well? Thanks in advance.
42 is perfect :) the watch looks perfect. If it’s not for you then it’s not for you. If you enjoy white Lume and you enjoy a 38 mm case then you already have that watch in your other hand! To me what excites me about the watch is knowing that it’s the exact same watch as the movie! It’s not just any watch! It’s the MURPH watch. It has to live up to that name. What is being suggested by you is wrong in every sense of the word. You can’t make a watch that’s not the Murph watch and call it the Murph watch, to me that’s fraudulent and I think Hamilton understood that very well when producing this watch! As a person who loves the movie and has watched it numerous times, I appreciate this watch for everything that it is.
Absolutely agree ! Plus the Murph watch has got cathedral hands which the regular 38 version doesn't have. All in all the Hamilton has combined the features from some of their other watches to make this one. And I think it looks great...Simple and elegant design. As for the size...well it all the matter of fashion and ...preference !
Thanks for going to be coming out with a long term review for this watch! That'd be great to see how it holds up and if the water resistance could be dependable
Got the Murph yesterday. Love its size ( I don't go below 40mm) it really doesn't wear big imho. Only criticism is legibility isn't great- love the fauxtina but combined with a very reflective crystal it doesn't make this watch easy to read. Lume is rubbish as usual from Hamilton. Overall a lovely timepiece tho. Wish they made more dateless watches, really dislike that useless complication. Cheers 👍🏻
40mm is the perfect size for a field watch. 42mm is the perfect size for a dive watch or any other sports watch. When u want to wear a watch on a leather strap as well, it should be 40mm or less. Paying $1,000 for a Hamilton doesn't make sense to me. Especially when the movement is not an ETA 2824-2 anymore and instead the downgraded powermatic movement. The power reserve is up but the beat rate has gone down from 8bps to 6bps. Thus compromising the sweep and accuracy. No srew down crown with added protection for water resistance. I would pay $350 max for a watch with these features.
Here is a textbook case of accuracy being confused with precision. Don't get me wrong, I am not a big fan of powermatic movements, but the beat rate is not a minus, IMO. There's No date complication, it's harder to find places that can service those movements, and the simple fact that they have not been around long enough to know how dependable they are.
@@izayus11 the Hamilton h40 movements are different from the powermatic 80 because the Hamiltons have no plastic in the movement, hence why they have more jewels
If you like the style of the Murph but not the size, a Seiko Alpinist is the way to go. It’s one of my favorites and I never get tired of wearing it and staring at it.
Excellent review and video. I love the Hamilton Khaki, but have not yet purchased one due to the issue mentioned in the video. I anxiously await your longer-term review :) . While I love larger watches, I agree the Murph should have been 40mm. I don’t quite understand their thinking here, nor the price (unless it is limited, as you had indicated). I really appreciate your style of reviews, which is very informative to the ignorant mini-collector, like myself, Thank you!
I have a 7 1/4 inch wrist, 42mm is awesome. So far, I’m loving this at preowned price of $600. We’ll,see how it goes. I have a Navy Pioneer and loved that 2892 movement in that watch.
I'm a khaki king owner and really pleased with it. I have been thinking of the hamilton field mechanical. What are your thoughts on that. Regarding the Murph watch, I don't think that I'd spend $1000 on a Hamilton considering the substandard lume and the overall plain design.
Agree 100% that the case should be 40mm or preferably 38mm. I think that case is the perfect size and really comfortable. Great review! Maybe next year they can do the smaller case. Yes, it should be cheaper, but I think people will pay the asking price. Thanks!
I’m looking at the newer time only Khaki Field manual wind (aged lune, but tasteful IMO). Thoughts vs yours? It’s 38 so I’m loving that size with a smaller wrist.
Great presentation. Regarding the Murph, it misses for me at 42 but I do really dig the faux lume. I think it goes great with the cathedral hands and font. Wish the lugs were drilled, the case was 38-39 and the bezel was brushed. The pricing as you noted makes little sense for the reasons you've already cited. Hamilton has recently done this large price disparity again with it's Khaki Aviation Pilot Pioneer and the Khaki Field 38 bronze both of which are substantially more $ than other similar specced watches in their line. I've recently grown really fond of the look and size of the Khaki Field 38 automatic and I am actively considering getting one but I really wish it had a screw down crown, drilled lugs, blue AR (or any at all) and that the scratch magnet bezel was brushed instead of polished.
I personally would not get a Murph. I actually recently got a Hamilton Khaki Field 42 Auto. I like the regular Khaki Field better. I’m not a fan of the hands on the Murph, or the old lume. It should only cost more if costs more to produce. It’s possible they are trying to attract film fans who might not necessarily be into watches and don’t know how much similar watches are going for. I’m usually not a fan of the old lume look, it’s stands out too much.
It depends on the wrist you have, I don't see 42 mm too big at all, nice mid size. I know ypu are supposed to only like these mini diameter watches now, not for me.A nice quality watch may be seen on the wrist
I can't figure out why this watch is so hyped. Do many people care? There's not really a history, like you said, it was a prop in a movie. I get the Rippley watch from Alien, I wouldn't buy one, but I get it. Alien was a franchise, it had some impact. I'm starting to feel like manufacturers are out of new ideas, so they try to hype stuff like this , at twice the price to boot. Kind of takes the fun out of collecting, when you feel taken by junk.
The Khaki is kind of like an entry level mechanical Swiss swatch that isn't plastic (AKA Swatch) and is traditionally made. That's why people like it. It's relatively inexpensive at $270-ish, but you can get the same quality at a lower price from Seiko or Orient or get something better at the same price point from Seiko or Orient. Being mostly Swiss made adds $100 to the price.
I know what you mean, but I think it’s because that movie was pretty great, with a large fan base, and the Murph watch wasn’t just a random prop but a key part of the plot. In other words, it wasn’t just her watch, but the final solution as it delivered the message. I wish it was 40mm and cheaper. It’s not a $1000 watch, but perhaps the grey market will have it someday for $699 or less. I’ll snap it up in a heartbeat for $600.
$1000.00 for this watch is a joke but guess what.....Hamilton will sell every one at that price. Not a lot of watches available for a lot of people that want it. About the size. McConaughey wore the Aviator's watch (H646150) which is the exact watch you can buy from Hamilton. They had to make the "Murph" watch true to the movie to be consistent. If they sized it any less than 42, they would have had the "collectors" complaining that it's not really a "murph" watch. I'd bet that Hamilton will make this watch in a smaller size somewhere down the line. If they do, probably 38mm. I own the Aviator watch and it's 42mm. 42mm is way to big for a field watch and unless Hamilton makes a smaller version, the "Murph" watch will not be in my buying future. BTW...the Aviator watch is really nice.
I just pre ordered it and I think the box and the Morse code on the second hand is the difference between the 2555 piece limited and the other ones. $955 bucks is not that bad for a watch that came from a movie. They are sold out on pre order everywhere
I don't like much of what is coming out of Hollywood and Interstellar is no exception. I know that a lot of people enjoyed the movie, but I did not. Needless to say I am not going to put out a thousand or more on something used as a prop in a Hollywood movie.
40mm would have been better but I did preorder the watch anyway. It is far cleaner of a dial than the 38 you are comparing it to in my opinion. Also the watch it should have been compared with was the Hamilton field day date which is also 42mm. I agree the cost is higher than necessary but I also think some watches do not need a day and/or date function and this murph Watch definitely falls into that category for me. Again the biggest pause for me was the size and the lack of AR coating but other than that I love it.
Agree with 100% Mike! 42mm $1,000 is a miss in my opinion from Hamilton. I get they're staying true to the movie prop but in this day and age the trend is going to more smaller watches. Unless they intend to come out with different sizes later in the year or next year? Maybe a date version as well? 🤷🏻♂️ that would be cool, especially in a lower price point. 👌
Manaz101 On the planet I live on, there is no ,,going smaller trend,, Just this past few years I’ve seen most of the popular brands releasing larger version of their popular models. Rolex, Omega, Seiko, Oris, IWC, Hamilton, heck, even Cartier, plus others. As much as I try, the only trend for smaller watches I see is just from a couple of small microbrands
@@d3xmeister all the manufacturers you mentioned have 40mm or smaller watches in their collection, which were released in 2018. For example Tudor 58, Omega Seamaster 1948 and Oris Big date crown just to name 3. There are plenty more out there, unfortunately that don't get as much publicity. I won't be surprised if more smaller sized watches are released this year as well following the "vintage" trend
Manaz101 I’m not saying they don’t have small watches or smaller versions. I’m saying I keep seeing larger watches or versions released. Your examples are pretty timid ,,trends,, for example, can I get a BB58 blue dial ? Pepsi ? GMT ? Silver instead of gold markings ? Even though I wear larger watches, which aren’t actually ,,larger,, if you are over 6,5ft tall, look like Shrek and have over 8-inch wrists, I am sane enough to wish not for smaller or larger watches trend, but for choice so that anybody can pick the one that suits them. This is also the reasons I kinda flip out when I hear people preaching smaller or larger watches or trends, it doesn’t make any sense to me.
I don't think it would truly be "the Murph" if it was smaller than 42mm, because, as has been well-stated, that's what the original movie watch was. Having said that, it's too big for me to wear, thanks to the super long lugs. Ideally, I'd like to see them release an unofficial, standard production "mini-Murph" in 38mm as a companion piece. That would appease both the watch nerds that like smaller sizes and people with smaller wrists. Plus, since it would be unofficial, it would likely cost less. I'm positive they will never do any of that, but I can always dream, right?
I would have preferred Hamilton release a 42MM limited edition model with special packaging for those who wanted that experience and a 38-39MM production model that would fit better with the overall design of the watch.
Murph: Beautiful watch, but the Hollywood connection cheapens the watch to me. Also: (1) Make it 38mm, (2) Put AR coating on the underside of the crystal, and (3) Drop the price. Khaki: Pointlessly busy dial, particularly with the 24 hour affectation.
Its really had to review /compare a watch that one has not directly handled and worth is in the eye of the spender. I feel the 40mm with no bezel insert will make the watch look much bigger on the wrist based upon dial-size. 38 is near perfection for most people due to the proportions. The lume is beige and lighter than the normal vintage old radium look. I think it is a classic in the making and can be dressed up/down and makes it much more flexible than the Khaki...thus very easily justifiable for the 2 x price...IMHO.
Not only is the 42mm bad, I believe the lug to lug is 52mm? That’s insane. Back to the 42mm, that’s diver territory to me. 40mm should be the maximum for that style of watch that the Murph is.
3x? It’s not $15-1800. It’s not even twice the price at $895-$995. The dial alone though imho is leaps nicer than any khaki field. So to me it’s worth it. I think 41mm with a lug to lug at no bigger than 50mm would’ve been perfect. But the 38mm with its lug to lug is hovering around a woman’s Watch size. So to me stick with the 42mm if your wrist is close to 7in or bigger.
I think it's a little early to say anything about this watch until it's on wrist. Some watches wear larger than their specs, some smaller. I've personally found Hamilton's lugs make watches seem larger on wrist.
Judging by this one, I think they may have upped their game on the luminous, it's noticeably better than it was on the Field Khaki I reviewed in August.
The size does not bother me as much as the price. $1000 for a H10 movement? I am hopping it is released as a regular production at a lower price, under $600. I love my 38mm auto!
This is essentially a khaki field auto 42mm. Exact same case, crown and movement but different dial and strap. That being said is it worth $1000? No... but nice piece.
Well, if that watch is good enough for the girl (Murph) in the movie, then it should be good enough for most MEN. Speaking for myself, I love everything about it and I can’t wait to order mine even if it does cost me $1500 Australian.
They sized themselves out of the market. lol. I just bought the 38mm automatic and it's the best everyday watch I've had. My Longines heritage chronograph is a bit much to wear everyday.
I’ll never understand people getting worked up about the price of a completely discretionary item like this. I would be willing to bet that the vast majority of people chosen from a random sample would think that $100 is way to much to pay for a timepiece that isn’t as accurate as their smartphone. As for size, beyond the fact that, at 40mm or 38mm it wouldn’t be the “Murph watch”, I think it wears small for a 42.
the comparison should be between the 42 and the 38 murphy, not the 38mm Khaki field, its a different watch after all. You shod, of all people know that a watch is more than just a sum of its component parts!
Honestly, did anyone even know the watch's actual size from the movie? I can see how a die-hard fan of both horology and the movie could insist upon making it a 1:1 reproduction, BUT Hamilton should know it's market, and make a decision that would sell more of the product, and that is to acquiesce to the current size trend.
I would have preferred 40mm. Of course I would have preferred a 40 mm version of the mechanical field as well. As it is, for me, one is too small and one is too large.
Even without seeing the video, yes it does, because technical specs rarely, if ever, was the most important factor in pricing a watch, so why do people these days agonize about specs, it seems this started only in this internet forums/comments/blogs age. As for the size, I think size means squat unless directly related to wrist size and individuals size. Saying 42mm is too big or 38mm is too small is just plain stupid. Both CAN be true for some individuals, or both CAN be false. Ideally all watches should come in at least two sizes. As for comparison with the normal Khaki Field, it really pointless, you just get the one you like, simple as that, how stupid it would be to really like the Murph but buy the Field because it’s better value on paper ?
Yall need to stop "big watch shaming" lol. There are plenty of 38mm Hamilton watches out there for you guys with smaller wrists. 38mm looks like a toy on me. Let me enjoy some watches please. I have an 8 inch wrist and think 42mm is about the best size for me.
Another great video. I agree with you on all the Murph watch opinions. If its limited $999 is more acceptable and the size definitely 40mm or even 39mm will had been optimal. That been said I had been waiting for this watch long enough that I will probably buy it anyway and that’s probably what Hamilton is counting on that so many have been waiting for it that will pony up the extra $500. If is not limited I see the price dropping with a year or two. And the Khaki auto is one of my favorite watch. instagram.com/p/BsxiEA8D0nA/?igshid=1juzgvruw55cm
