This is the second time Hamilton Leithauser has graced the Tiny Desk. Two summers ago, he and his band The Walkmen played a powerful set of songs from their final album for now, Heaven. The Walkmen announced an indefinite hiatus toward the end of 2013, and since then we've heard strong solo records from Walter Martin and Peter Matthew Bauer - and, of course, Leithauser himself, which is what prompted us to invite him back.
These songs put Leithauser's voice front and powerfully center, even more than it was in the band. There's a more relaxed feel all over his new solo album, Black Hours, though a few full-throttle tunes get the most out of his huge voice - including the second song from this set, "Alexandra." Along with The Walkmen's Paul Maroon on guitar, Leithauser brought along Hugh McIntosh, who played drums in Leithauser's old band The Recoys. All in all, a fine re-introduction to a singer who's lost none of his power, even as he's matured and loosened as a performer. --BOB BOILEN

This guy is class. Who else could sing in the very particular, strange and beautiful way he does. Me, you and no one else.

I remember buying The Walkmen's first album and thought it was great, but thought they wouldn't last because his voice is so different. Now he is putting out new stuff solo and with Rostam that I like even more than the old stuff. Rare I like an artist more as they develop beyond the first couple albums.

Just saw The Walkmen in Philadelphia, they were as wonderful as NYC in the early aughts. Hamilton was delighted by the warm reception in a way I’ve never quite seen at a live show before. Such a gracious lovely human being. 🫶🏽✌🏽

Mr. G. I like all the bands listed even though Father John Misty left Fleet Foxes. But this guy is awesome and the music he is still putting out seems to get better each album since the early 00's. You are a douche.

The performance is not his best, BUT (!!!) this man is a true genius! I tell you, his debut "Black Hours" and also "I had a dream that you were mine" records are true masterpieces. Thank me later! P.s.: He just needs a certain atmosphere and sound that suits his voice more.

Pretty ok.. I think his voice works better with rock music like his other band The Walkmen. Check out the album Bows & Arrows if you haven't already. It's amazing.

Didn't like this at all. Way too much repeating in the lyrics and the instrumental part. The singer also sound like he was trying to sing by shouting (and producing a decent amount of sweat because of that) but because of the very small vocal range he has it indeed sounded - as EricMLopez mentioned in his comment - half-assed. Don't want to sound like a hater or anything but my ears started hurting 3-4 minutes after the beginning of this video.

You really have NO idea what you're talking about if you're saying Hamilton Leithauser has a small vocal range. Listen to We Can't Be Beat and try and say that again.

Listening to Hamilton Leithauser sing is kind of like shooting heroin. The first time you do it you throw up all night and end up doing it a second time solely for the reason that you're incredulous at the thought of people doing it for enjoyment. That second time: nope, you're still pretty sure you were legally dead a couple times...but afterwards you realize there was SOMETHING in there you liked; you just can't put your finger on it, so you do it again and it's a little bit easier. Pretty soon you need it just to get out of bed in the morning.
