You were actually right the first time! Hamilton was writing Washington’s speech, not talking about himself. It’s a clever little scene, Hamilton is speaking because he wrote it, but Washington is singing alongside him because Washington is the one who brought the speech to life in his farewell address

An extra level of sadness is that George Washington didn't get to enjoy his retirement for very long. He died like 2 years later. So he really was speaking to the people "one last time." I tear up listening to this song. I think George Washington set a beautiful example to future presidents of voluntarily stepping down that lasted for over 140 years. He had the humility to step away from power and go home.

The end speech is an excerpt from Washington's actual resignation speech. Hamilton is just writing the words.

I believe Lin Manuel Miranda actually wrote Washington's role with Chris Jackson voice in mind. Since they're good friends, he wrote the role around him, since he knew what he could do.

“Pick up a pen. Start writing!” This is the FIRST time in the musical where Hamilton has been short of words. He doesn’t want Washington, who has turned into his father figure, to step down. Washington literally tells Hamilton to start writing, and Hamilton makes up excuses NOT to write, which is the exact opposite of Non-Stop. Hamilton has been shocked into silence for the first and last time. Also, the background music that you said was kind of funky and cool is the same very very subtle background music of Right Hand Man. It hints from the very beginning about this song! LMM is a GENIUS!

The staging of this song brings me to tears every time and my heart grows two sizes. The full company appears on stage, each with their families and dressed in their finest clothes to honor the First Citizen as he takes his well-deserved final bow.

"I'm gonna let him hit that high note one more time" Don't you mean....One Last Time? Eh? Eh? Ok I'll stop.

This song represents one of Alexander Hamilton's greatest triumphs - at least partial authorship of one of America's greatest political speeches, Washington's Farewell Address. All of his spoken words while he was holding the quill were the written words of the speech, and LMM used a motif from Obama's administration where will.i.am did the spoken-word blending with President Obama's words. This song also heralds the effective end of Hamilton's political career (and he knew it - you noted his reluctance to accept that GW was stepping down). Washington was his bulwark and buffer from the rest of the political establishment and the (mf'ing) Democratic-Republicans in particular. Once GW was safely returned to Mount Vernon, the long knives came out for AH, as you will soon see. Buckle in, the seas are about to get choppy.

It wasn't law that Presidents could only serve two terms until the 22nd Amendment was ratified in 1951 after FDR died in his fourth term. However... Washington sets a precedent by stepping down after two terms... which most following presidents honored.

When I saw Hamilton on Broadway this song sent electric through my body. I looked at my daughter she was bawling. So was I. Check out Chris Jackson singing this at the White House. You won't be disappointed.

I would definitely recommend all the extra stuff for Hamilton. It's all so good and when you're done.

I was just broken into tears in this song. And, I think it's again because of amazing melody playing in background and a reprise of Story of Tonight and amazing acting and singing from every member of this cast. Also, seeing Chris Jackson belting those notes is so impressive.

Madison wrote a first draft of this speech during Washington's first term, as Washington contemplated stepping down at the end of the 4 years. But Hamilton and Jefferson teamed up to convince Washington serve a 2nd term. (Despite their political disputes, at this time both were afraid the Nation splinter if Washington stepped down after his first term. When Washington decided 2 terms were it for him, he asked Hamilton to rewrite the address. Historians believe the final draft held more of Hamilton's writing style and sentiments and less of Madison's original draft. However, after Hamilton's death, the Democratic-Republicans made it their mission to erase Hamilton's legacy from...well...as much as possible. And this speech is one example where Eliza had to fight for Hamilton to get any credit for his contributions. She (and their son, Alexander, I believe?) had to bring forth drafts that they had in their possession to prove to Congress that most of the speech were Hamilton's words. So in the song, the parts that Hamilton is speaking represent a section of the speech that he wrote (that I assume Lin felt were particularly poignant and apropos for his characterizations of both Hamilton and Washington). Then Washington joins in, as a crowd appears around him, to indicate he is "giving" his Farewell Address. It also alludes to Washington's death, which occurred within years of his resignation. Personally, I think this is one of the most impressive songs in the whole show. Using this device for the Farewell address was both incredibly moving and effective in conveying the importance of this moment in US politics.

I always thought the phrase “George Washington’s going home” as well as the pure emotion of this song from that point has a double meaning in the context of this play . Because, you see, Washington only lived about two years after retirement and the timeline of this play kind of goes a a little bit fast .. so I think this song is literally meant to talk about George Washington retiring and also about his passing.. Using one song to cover both milestones in the story which explains the level of emotion by everybody.

Fun fact 1: When Lin was writing Hamilton, he had Christopher Jackson in mind to play George Washington. Those songs were basically written for him. Fun fact 2: The lines that Lin and Lin and Chris are reciting midway through "One Last Time" are almost direct quotes from Washington's Farewell Address.

Chris Jackson is such a sweetheart!❤️ Everytime I have watch him perform this song, in completely different settings and points in time he's crying. And I don't think it's because he's in character but he's genuinely in tears. The fact that he points on the audience while saying "History has it's eyes on you" is just beautiful. Also I'm pretty sure that in this song they quote Washington's real speech.

The spoken words in this song are the actual words from Washington’s farewell address. It is believed that the speech was mainly written by Hamilton which is why the song is written this way. Hamilton is writing the speech and Washington comes in repeating it to the crowd. Also, PLEASE react to the cut songs and to the performances that were done at the White House for the Obama administration. There is something special about seeing these songs performed at the White House!

As others have said, Hamilton at no point in his “speech” is talking about himself. He is writing Washington’s farewell address as Washington asked him to do (“I want you to draft an address” “pick up a pen start writing”)

The last 30 seconds of this song always has me in tears, except for the times I'm already crying in anticipation of the last 30 secs. And the Hamilton polka is def worth a watch after you've finished the play ☺️

Honestly I teared up when you talked about graduation. I graduated in 2020. I did not attend my graduation. They had it again the next year but I had already moved on to other things. I didn’t get that moment with my class where we looked back at what we did. I had a lovely celebration with my family that was great but not the same. At least this song can give me that closure now.

Chris Jackson always kills it doing One Last Time. I would totally think about doing reactions to the Hamilton Polka, The Animatics from the Fandom, Lost songs, and even the Off-Broadway songs that are slightly altered from the final Broadway version. They are all amazing.

One last time might actually be one of my favourites from act 2

All the feels. This is my fav song of the whole work. It’s clever story telling. And uses all possible tricks in the musical arrangement to heighten the effect. AND Chris slays. I think Chris was the first person cast. I recall a story about Lin telling Chris on stage during Heights, that the next musical was going to be Hamilton, and Chris was going to be Washington. Lin has said he knows Chris’ voice so well, that he could write specifically for him. And the dynamics between the two characters here is certainly helped by the long friendship between the two offstage. Thanks for doing this.

Those are legitimate lines from George Washington's Farewell Address, you can look it up. Its basically the last paragraph of the entire speech. The whole thing is like 32 pages long. "Though in reviewing the incidents of my administration I am unconscious of intentional error, I am nevertheless too sensible of my defects not to think it probable that I may have committed many errors. Whatever they may be, I fervently beseech the Almighty to avert or mitigate the evils to which they may tend. I shall also carry with me the hope that my country will never cease to view them with indulgence and that, after forty-five years of my life dedicated to its service with an upright zeal, the faults of incompetent abilities will be consigned to oblivion, as myself must soon be to the mansions of rest. Congratulations was one of the songs that was removed from the show but it is amazing. I don't remember exactly where it came in the play but it was sometime after the Reynolds pamphlet.

The lyrics are taken from Washington’s farewell address. Toward the end of his first term, Washington actually thought of stepping down and asked Madison to write a farewell address, but then decided on a second term. Hamilton built on what Madison had started for this farewell address - and greatly improved it. Ron Chernov’s biography of Hamilton is well worth the read btw. It is what inspired LMM and it tells you so much more. It’s also fun to discover the few points of historical inaccuracy- most were because they needed to condense things. Also interesting tidbit is Washington’s very last letter was to Alexander Hamilton. I don’t think they were friends, but Washington greatly respected Hamilton’s abilities. It is true that Washington elevated Hamilton, but equally true that Hamilton was at least a footnote in all Washington’s success.

Yes!! The Hamilton Polka is 100% worth the watch, it's Weird Al at his best! I would highly recommend watching Lin Manuel's reaction to it in your personal time, as well..It makes me smile every time. My favorite of the 'lost' songs is First Burn, but they're all of equal caliber to the musical. It's amazing to think Hamilton itself runs 2.5 hours and had that much 'extra' content.

I think the next songs should be "I Know Him", "The Adams Administration" and "We Know" because the 3 songs after these are REALLY connected.

I really recommend that you check out some of the cut songs at least! Congratulations and First Burn are great and they even have some FANTASTIC animatics by the wonderfully talented artist Ziksua. Her animatic for Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story (the last song of the show), is awesome too, if you wanna check it out. It really adds a lot to the emotion of the scene. Other great cut songs (with great animatics) that add some extra context are Adams Administration+Cut rap (by springbon-t), Dear Theodosia reprise (by Chiino), and Ten Things One Thing (by DaisieDoodle)

The first time I watched Hamilton I teared up at the end and with this song, and even after so many rewatches, I still get extremely emotional with both. In this case, Chris Jackson just kills it, his voice is out of this world and the emotion he pours into it grabs my heart every time. I'm glad you enjoyed it too!

This is a pretty accurate depiction of what happened and the emotions felt by both Washington and Hamilton from what we know. I love that they used the actual resignation speech and set it to music. The staging gives an emotional punch. Especially how they show Hamilton writing the speech with reservation about Washington’s departure, but as he steps back the real life speech is fully turned into song. Leading to the full staging of the number at the conclusion. Jackson nailed this performance. So iconic. Although there is no mistaking that he is walking back towards the bullet in the end of the number.

Also Ben Franklin's song, sung by the Decemberists is brilliant- one of the lost/cut songs

As many mentioned it Hamilton’s spoken part is from Washington’s Farewell Address which Hamilton probably helped write. To me those first spoken lines aren’t so much a humble brag, but more a humble apology saying essentially that if he did anything wrong during his administration it was unintentional. He also hopes future generations don’t think badly of him for any errors he might have made. Also yes pls more Hamilton content!! as a very america critical person i still absolutely love hamilton. it’s just so well done and the characters are so in depth that i get a human approach to the old politics. i always care more about people than politics and this musical makes politics more about people in a very meaningful way.

It really is a testament to Hamilton that the great George Washington had enough trust in him that he had Hamilton at his side for so long, and even worked with Hamilton to write Washington's farewell speech. Washington knew what he wanted to say, and had the wisdom to have really good ideas about what the people needed to hear, but he knew Hamilton had the eloquence and skill to write the speech in a way that would get the ideas across perfectly. Hence the part in this song where Hamilton starts in the front, reciting the speech, then as he walks backwards, Washington walks forwards and continues the speech with Hamilton in the background. Beautifully done.

I saw Chris Jackson say (I think on. PBS special) that because Washington was a slaver, Jackson struggled to reconcile Washington's evils with his contributions and reputation. He did "commit many errors" and his country has certainly"viewed them with indulgence."
