Hamilton is a phenomenal Broadway Musical, and Lin-Manuel Miranda outdid himself with these three songs and as Alexander Hamilton! In my ""I Know Him", "The Adams Administration", and "We Know" (From "Hamilton")" reaction I listen to MORE of possibly my new FAVORITE Broadway musical!
I'm a Hamilton noob reacting to ""I Know Him", "The Adams Administration", and "We Know" (From "Hamilton")"! Listen to "I Know Him", "The Adams Administration", and "We Know" (From "Hamilton")" on RU-vid here:

Hamilton: An American Musical is a sung-and-rapped-through musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It tells the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Miranda said he was inspired to write the musical after reading the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.
The show draws heavily from hip hop, as well as R&B, pop, soul, and traditional-style show tunes. It casts non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures. Miranda described Hamilton as about "America then, as told by America now."
It's my first time listening to Hamilton and my first time listening to ""I Know Him", "The Adams Administration", and "We Know" (From "Hamilton")"

It also, to me at least, shows how we have not come very far. I'm a white female, but I'm also from NY and live in the south. Even I have had locals tell me to "go back where I came from". We've even heard variations of it said by authority figures and politicians, and TO authority figures and politicians. It's very rare that its not attached to some form of bigotry.

The reggae vibe especially makes sense on that specific line because they're telling Hamilton to go back where he came from, which is St. Croix, an island in the Caribbean. It's those small touches that really show how much attention to detail Lin had.

Fun Fact: In "I know him" King George III refers to Washington as "large" and that the others compared to Washington are "small". The reason was that Washington was 1.88 meters tall (6 ft 2 in) which considering the time period was very tall. Also I love the fact that in the beginning of "The Adams Administration" when Jonathan Groff (King George III) is dancing you can see that Leslie Odom Jr (Aaron Burr) is trying to stay in character and not laugh but you can kind of "hear" him smile (I know it sounds weird but it makes sense)

They were house Democratic Republicans. James Monroe, Frederick Muhlenberg, and Abraham Venable. later Hamilton has an affair of honor with Monroe where Burr is Monroe's second. It's settled before it reached a actual duel though. Tension between the two men linger for years. The confrontation part of We know happened in 1792. Things they promised to keep to themselves was leaked years later by a Reporter who (at the time) was friendly with Jefferson. Hamilton was unamused to say the least. And it was result of Monroe refusing to publically clear Hamilton's name that Hamilton wrote the little pamphlet that is sung about in the song after the next.

@@missdancefan Chernow's biography opens with a widowed Eliza Hamilton in Washington DC refusing James Monroe as he attempted to pay a visit to her at her home. She knew. Also in Washington DC is a statue of Frederick Muhelnberg's brother John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg, who was kind of a Lutheran warrior-monk and was part of Washington's army at Valley Forge and would have known Alexander Hamilton *very* well. After the war and some years later he became one of the founders of the Philly Democratic-Republicans and in 1801 went to work for Treasury, running the Port of Philadelphia's Customs operations.

The background for "We Know" is described in detail in the Chernow biography but is not really addressed in the play. Essentially, Philadelphia (where AH had his affair) was a small big city and James Reynolds was involved in more schemes than just wife-pimping. Some of his schemery did include monetary shenanigans with the government and when he got caught and the government was building its case against him there was a paper trail (check stubs in different amounts) that led back to Hamilton. But AH was fanatical about his dealings as Treasury Secretary and refused any opportunity to profit from his position. His family even hovered at the high side of poverty because AH insisted that he could only use his salary as income. No executive board positions, no "stipends" from office-seekers or anything else. He wanted his new nation that he built with his own damn hands to stand with honor among the rest of the nations. So when he was accused of graft and self-dealing he chose to protect his government's honor by...well, the next three-song set will explain. Did you notice the wind just picked up? There's a bit of a breeze now.

A little info heading into the next couple of songs. Having affairs was super common, but it was considered a private thing, so long as you kept it “proper” so to speak. One of which is you kept it low key, don’t go taking your mistress to a public event. You also had to be smart about who your mistress was, they had to have a sense of decorm as well. So the issue about Hamilton having an affair is more about the blackmail part of it, not that he had an affair. Remember who is talking to him, Burr’s wife (she had passed away at this point) was married when they met. The issue is the blackmail part could infer poor moral judgment.
@MLoreley

Now, you've got the gist of what happened with the Reynolds' people in respect to the portrayal in the show, BUT The reason for the confrontation here was actually a real thing that Hamilton was confronted over-- Wall Street Speculation, potentially using *US Government Tax Money* to do that, and specifically to help his father-in-law, Phillip Schuyler stay cozy in his wealth. The reason why this would've been bad is, being Treasurer, he would've been not only casting doubt on his role in the government, but ALSO we had a whole bunch of people fresh off a Revolution (relatively) who were still VERY unsure about the government; The government was unstable and untested. If the people lost faith in the government, a LOT would come tumbling down. So Hamilton, in order to preserve the government he'd fought so hard for, ended up doing something very stupid-- something he saw as the lesser of two evils. BUT There's a VERY good chance that the affair with Maria Reynolds was not real; she was a woman in poverty at a time when education was for the wealthy, and she would not have likely been able to write the letters that Hamilton produced as proof of their affair. Regardless of how true it is/was, it was still VERY damning, but still better than getting caught snipping funds off the top of the US Treasury, ESPECIALLY with how fragile trust in the government was.

I knew you would love We Know lyrics! They are insane, I've said it million times and I'll say it again - Lin is genius. I'm quite nervous about next songs because from that moment things are really not going to be nice... Somebody already said it, but I will also say it just in case - the next three songs definitely should go together, they make one scene and the transitions between them are very smooth. This next scene isn't going to be pretty, but goddammit it's a masterpiece. P.S. And let's just have mercy on Groff, he was wearing a wig and some reeeeeally warm clothes and I'm sure he was not allowed to take it off while he was not on stage because it would take too much time to put it on back, not to mention that it's always hot on stage because of the stage lights (they have to be very bright so that the audience is able see everything, which means they are hot too).

That one section had a reggae vibe because they were telling Hamilton to go back where he came from, which was an island (Nevis) in the Caribbean -- "you best g'wan run back where you come from".

LOL - You are so cute! LOL - You have to understand that these actors are wearing these heavy costumes for HOURS and once under those BEAMING HOT LIGHTS, of course they're going to break a sweat - some sweat more profusely than others, but you can bet everybody's under arms - no matter how strong the deodorant - is slightly, or heavily sweaty! So thrilled to see another episode of Hamilton! It's just too much fun to watch your reactions to something that I've seen before and have enjoyed as much as you're enjoying it now! Can't wait for the next episode!

Fun fact: the line about King George saying that he "wasn't aware [stepping down] was something a person could do" is, if anything, underselling his reaction; apparently, upon receiving the news that Washington was voluntarily stepping down from power despite his overwhelming popularity, King George reportedly responded "If he does that, he will be the greatest man who has ever lived."

You mentioned the lyrics, "Oceans rise, empires fall." I read somewhere that the music was deliberate. On the word "rise, the note goes down from the previous one and on "fall" the note goes up. Interesting.

Fun fact: Thomas Jefferson and John adams both die hours apart from each other on the fourth of july. At least one of the signers of the declaration of independence is still living were john's last words, and unbeknownst to him thomas passed hours earlier.

An entire ream of paper should seem like an exaggeration in terms of the extent of Alex's response to Adams, but it really doesn't because it's so true to his personality that anything less than a ream seems like writer's block.
