There aren't that many disco floor-fillers that you'd instantly recognise from the guitar riff - Staying Alive, Le Freak, Lady Marmalade, maybe. The guitar's usually low in the mix, adding to the whole, rather than taking centre stage. But it's always worth a dig into the mix. You might not recognise this one from the condensed guitar parts, but the reveal's halfway through the clip . . .
All down to Scottish funk master Hamish Stuart, who played with Chaka Khan on her first three albums. And this debut single, I'm Every Woman, released 26 September 1978, is a perfect example of his playing. The song wouldn't be the same without it. No claims to be playing it with his skill and feel, but it's the same guitar he played on all three albums, so at least it looks the part. The same can't be said of the guitarist here, nodding along at the end . . .
A lovely Casino, bought by Hamish in 1978, and played for 40 years, with Chaka Khan, The Average White Band, Paul McCartney, and solo. Beautifully aged cherry red finish, lovely low action, and those P90s just blow you away!
