I just want to say I sometimes watch other videos on hammocks, backpacking, etc, but yours are by far the best. Between the detail and entertainment and everything in between. I love your channel, Shug!
RIP Greenbean, I feel like I've come to know you well over the last year :( Really appreciate the video Shug, I prefer to hang without a ridgeline but was thinking of carrying extra cord to make one in case I need to throw a bugnet on, and watching you do that knot showed me it really is a quick and easy solution ..
Oh no Shuggy, not the Green Bean! :( Isn't there a way you can repair it? It'd be a shame to bury it, since it's been your companion for so long! Cheers :)
Another excellent tutorial. Very informative for both noobs and experienced hangers. Sorry about Ol' Green Bean but at least it demonstrated what can happen when one doesn't maintain at least a 30 degree suspension angle. Ditto on The Ultimate Hang...what a great resource. Rock on in Sector 7!
RIP Green Bean. At least you still have Frankenquilt and the old tarp to keep you company. My original hammock is still going strong and I will learn from this to avoid killing it. My condolences
I just wanted to clear something up for myself, when measuring for the ridge line, the length of the hammock is when the hammock is laid out strait? I have a Snipe, and that is a 11' hammock, 132", so I would be looking for a ridge line around 109 7/16" ?? Do you take the hammock measurement from the tie off points on the hammock?
+foster wayne It is not an exact science, more of a starting point. But yes the length of the hammock laid out. Really though a few inches either way might be the sweet spot for you. Some still prefer no ridgeline at all. All part of the thrill and complexity of the hammock quest.
Poor Green Bean. Your lesson is not in vain Shug. I promise you I will never suspend my hammock that tight again after seeing that. I'm still having flashbacks to it...
I hope you have children or youngsters in your family on which to bestow your fun yet insightful presense Invaluable character traits to embue in the next generations ❤
Thank you Shug for this video! I just returned form trying out my hammock for the first time over night. The worst thing was I did not understand the ridge line concept. So I did not have it and I was miserable due to getting out of the hammock that was to high off the ground for my feet. It was hell getting out during the night to use the head and not having any support ! I was gong to give up the hammock but after watching your videos especially this on I’m going to give it a few mor tries! Thank again Shug for your videos!! Darry
Shug, watched your minus 40 camping vid last night. This is my second view from your channel, and you're a rad dude!!! Thanks for the awesome footage and advice, you have a new subscriber. WOOO BUDDY
"Oh, Sweet spot of mine" What a classic. I'm going to forward this video to a friend. We were just talking about ridgelines the other day. It's almost like you can read my mind. Scary... All secure in sector 7!
NOOOOO! GREEN BEAN! I'll light a candle in Green Bean's honor. Does this mean you will possibly make a video on how to make a hammock? Anyway, always great to see a Shug video. Thanks.
Great video, Shug. Sorry for the loss of your ol' friend. Not only did it serve you well for years, but we all benefited from the great tutorials you two provided the RU-vid community. Looking forward to seeing Green Bean 2.
Awww man sorry about your hammock bro, that is not cool. I always place my hammock straight out and prefer it that way, but still man sorry about your hammock. a fav piece of gear being destroyed sucks. Take care Shug.
Hey Shug. I'll be honest. When I watched the first video with you in it (don't recall which one) I thought you were a foolish good ball and would not like your videos. BUT after watching more of you, your goofy attitude is a welcome change from so many videos on RU-vid. I for one really enjoy your entertaining and educational videos. Don't change anything and keep up the great work.
Thanks Shug. I have watched so many seasoned hammock campers tighten there hammock like a bow string! That is how I did mine the first time. I never did fall asleep. Be blessed my friend. John
Sorry to hear you ripped your hammock. Thanks to you I start hiking and hammock camping. Even though I did not do an overnight thing yet I love taking it with me and do a little day trip. Get a lot of compliments and I agree. The Ultimate Hang is a great book.
I have found the 83% rule on ridgeline length is VERY helpful. If I experiment a little, usually just another inch or two shorter than this, I can make the calf ridge disappear. Vivi the adjustable ridgeline! WooHoo! Oh...I mean Whoa Buddeeeee!
i gasped and then wept with you Shug...Sorry 'bout the bean... Will there be a Green Bean 2.0? Question:ridgeline help or needed on a W.B. RidgeRunner? Your thoughts?
Sorry to heir about old green bean Shug. My ridge line is really tight and I'm not sure why. When laying in the the hammock I play my ridge line like a banjo. Lol
I love sleeping in my hammock, yet I've never slept at an angle. I wake up feeling great unlike when I sleep in a tent. However, I am going to try the ridgeline as well as the angle and see what happens. Going backpacking in a couple of weeks so we'll see how it goes. Very informative, thanks!
My condolences on the Green Bean hammock, maybe it's what was meant to be? Anyway, another fine production and very informative. I have a budget Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro...so I'm not sure how to rig the ridgeline....but I'm gonna try. BTW the bits with the clown nose in between the frames were hilarious! Thanks for the tutor session Shug, much appreciated.
Fun, educational tutorial...as usual. I learned alot about hammock ridgelines that I did not know. I'll check out the links, I do need that book. Thanks. And, I share your pain over the loss of "Green Bean". I'll be in mourning with you...at least until you buy another. Take care!
Late to the party, but not to hanging. Thanks for a great tutorial! Used to use (and still do when luxury camping) a HH, but switched to a Doublenest because I spend a lot of time on a C-17 and have to share a small amount of space with a lot of others hanging. The consistency of a ridgeline allows me to hang almost anywhere whether its between trucks, pallets, the airplane frame, or any combination!
I have a question/video request. Say your hiking and you come to nice cliff scene and you just have to stay there for the beauty. Only problem is that there is only one good tree or spacing isn't right. Do you have a hammock rigging idea for this? Please show us!
Thanks for this video. I've got and read the book, but a visual demonstration always helps. We also saw what could happen when a hammock is hung too tight! Sorry about Green Bean, but at least his spirit, the happy mesh bag, survived to continue the show.
Gday just found this video loved it your just like my friend Vw John, this was the most helpful video yet thank you mate keep up the craziness we need more funny in this world 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 3 thumbs up
Dude, will zing it fly for a hammock suspension fixed ridgeline? Nice Uni. I have a 26", 29", and 36" (and was the first to market unicycle specific disc brakes and universal caliper mounts!)
Shug....Been watching a lot of your videos, super informative and funny...ok well maybe not that funny LOL.. ;-) Any-who, I'm just starting out and bought my first webbing strapped, gathered-end-hammock, bug net and tarp. I am looking to buy cordage for my main ridge-line, hammock-ridge-line, and for all the stake-out ropes for tarp....knowing smaller zero stretch cordage is lighter, packs smaller, so one and so forth, etc.etc...I've looked all over and can't seem to find a good review/comparison on WHICH cordage to get. I am pretty sure I'd like to go with 1/16th inch dia. cordage (unless otherwise advised), but in WHAT? Dyneema?, Amsteel?, Kevlar Braided Cord? Spectra cord? Arborist Throw Line? I've only ever used poly and paracords and they both have lots of stretch........Hoping to get a spool of it (so idk, 500-1k feet) in a hi-viz color (orange, yellow...)...Do you have any "Shuggestions" on type, size, material, etc..etc..Thanks a heep...Tony
These.....for tarp....www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/product/tarp-guyline-yellow/ ridgelines for hammock....dutchwaregear.com/product-category/hammock-gear/hammock-accessories/hammock-ridgelines/ More cordage.....dutchwaregear.com/product-category/myg/rope/sheathed/
That's pretty much how I dress in my backyard... :p Great video and hope you're having a great summer! Oh BTW went to Clark's Trading Post in Lincoln, NH and found your long lost brother Murray Clark Jr...;p All I could think of while watching the bear show was that some how your two were related... LOL
Your video is informative & enjoyable. I was looking up hammock hanging calculator videos and found this. My hammock will go in a mobile home so I need to be extra careful. I'm glad I watched this, THANKYOU ❗
I wanna know where you got the nose? I couldn’t find it in the Ultimate Hang!! 🤣 you funny man....sad man with ripped hang...sounds indigenous American don’t it!!
I believe ol' Green Bean will be back.... Maybe a tad shorter, but just as good. Thanks for the explanation of ridgelines. In about a week I'll be camping in my DIY hammock for 2 weeks- not backpacking, but it will be some glorious sleeping! Will try the ridgeline . You rock, Shug!
That was sad to see the tear in your favourite hammock, "Green Bean". New to hammocking here, so getting lot's of advice from you and other 'experts'... here on the YT. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. Cheers from the land down under. ShazBoo
Shug, great video! How long was this hammock? I think you said the RL was 96 that you prefer, but never said the hammock length. I'm rethinking my RL length, I think 83% is too tight for me. You always look so comfortable, I want to try that percentage.
RIP Green Bean Sorry to hear about your hammock, Shug. It is like losing a good friend. Glass half full: you get to DIY and make good friends with a new hammock!
Thought I hear a kerplunk! Maybe it's time for some Peas 'n Pods (double layer?) :-) Just wanted to let you know that you rock with your teaching. I was getting really frustrated because I couldn't understand how this one guy did his ridgeline show n' tell, but after watching yours I realize where I got confuse at. I did give him kudos for his knot tying ;-) I wish the ones who wants us to watch and subscribe would remember to SHOW more and sometimes talk a little less. That's why there's a video camera. Thanks for giving me a chance to get more knowledgable!
Thanks for giving us noobs great hammock reviews & tips! What are your thoughts on the Warbonnet travel sock for the blackbird.....is it worth buying? Maybe you could review it! www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/blackbird-traveler-accessories/
Yes, 7/64th amsteel whoopie for hammock suspension. And a small dyneema whoopie for hammock ridgeline...at least on this hammock. Some of my hammocks have a utility line or amsteel 7/64th for ridgeline.
Dang ! Old Green Bean martyred it self so we could get a riidgeline edumacation. Thanks Greeny Beany !!! Something tells me your next video is gonna be on patching your hammock ! Cant wait for that one Shuggsy Wuggsy !!!!
Sorry to see old green bean get a rip... RIP in peace, indeed :( I've seen the hammock for a while now, and has been one of the motivations for my hammock purchase. I do have a question, though. What is a one-way slipknot called? The one where you can tighten it up by pulling it down, but it wont loosen when you pull the other end? (For hanging gear, etc, but keeping it tight. Great vid as always!
