Righto and fair dinkum~~ Does anyone truly say fair dinkum down your way? Consider yourself a splicer/hammocker. Was in Australia back in the early 1990s. Loved it. Never got to camp though.

@@shugemery Yes, fair dinkum does get said though seldom nowadays compared to culture in the 90s, but the true meaning of the phrase is perhaps lost to most who use it. Thanks for your excellent videos, Shug. Much appreciated!

I started into hammocks because of the simplicity. Bought a length of ripstop from ripstopbytheroll, seamed, gathered the end with paracord and hit the trail. (OK I hit my back yard first). From there of course you learn about tarps, tree straps, quilts, bug nets, and much, much more. So I was surprised to hear you say recently that hammocks are complicated. But as usual you are right. They are just so flexible there are all kinds of things you can do to improve things. I think that's what really draws me to hammock camping. There are just so many things you can try and many are easy and cheap. I just camped with the boyscout in 26 degree weather in gear that cost me about 160 bucks, a bit of DIY time and a few tricks I learned on youtube. (I couldn't do it without my coat zipped around my foot box, courtesy of the Shug).

I say it is complicated as it seems so to many and want them to know what they are getting into. I always found it intuitive and fun.

Nice video! Great info. I ran my static end of my whoopie sling through my end channel to remove one component. Otherwise it's your same setup. I use Dutch buckles and am not pleased. Fell on my tush because they were apparently upside down. Grr. Almost went to a Marlin Spike Hitch that time to get it done. Thinking of getting the new Beatle Clips. Liked the idea of tying the tail end as a redundant water break. So many more comments but I'll end there. Love your stuff. Thanks Shug!

I just got myself a pair of whoopie slings as my experiments with hanging the hammock direct to the daisy-chain tree huggers revealed the limitations of having regularly-spaced fixed anchor points and I wanted something that I could use for fine-tuning the hang. Thank you *so* much for explaining what the beads on my whoopie slings are for - it seemed blindingly obvious once you pointed it out, but I had no bloody idea. Great watching the variety of ways you can adapt the hang with a combination of straps and whoopie slings. I'm hoping that with 2 daisy chain straps and 2 whoopie slings, I should be able to adapt to any variations in the spacing and diameter of trees where I plan to hang my hammock.

I've got two 6 ft. whoopie slings that I carry with me, although I don't actually use them very much any more. It's kind of a security thing, that I still carry them, if I can't find two trees close enough. My suspension system now consists of mostly two 15 ft. 1inch webbings. Those don't seem to tangle and is quick to use. I use a marline spike knot and an easy release truckers knot on the other end for adjustments. I'm a believer in, the less hardware to keep up with, the better. I tend to loose things. Simplicity is essential to me. Once I learned how to use the easy release truckers knot, I seem to always use it. All it is, is a loop and a bit. Quick and easy. I torque it up and my hammock ridge line keeps my hammock at the right sag.

It's funny, I opted for a whoopie sling when I bought my hammock. I saw a lot of videos on using the becket hitch to tie your suspension to your tree huggers. Doesn't work so well with a whoopie sling (unless you don't need to make any adjustments after you hang it). I just received a couple of titanium toggles in the mail today. Marlin spikes will be the way I go!

Good explanation! I have to say, you were the inspiration to get into hammock camping and whoopie slings as well, even making them myself, which wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be! On another note, I have to admit, I've never been to Dutch's website until the whole chameleon phenomenon, and what caught my attention was the 0° incubator, now I can't remember, and to busy lollygagging to search your vast library of videos, but do you have/used the incubator?

Very good info.. I'm testing the whoopies for the first time for weight savings. The only minor problem is that you loose about 2 feet for hanging on trees close together compared to the cinch buckle/straps setup.

Only had that a couple of times. Hung off continuous loop.

Hang your continuous loop directly to the Marlin Spike and bypass the whoopie all together, in that instance. The continuous loop allows additional options vs. direct connecting the whoopie to the hammock.

Dang i love your man cave! Got to convince my wife to let me build a nice hobby hut like yours. Noticed you were quite color coordinated with your jacket and hammock on your outdoor segment.. Hmm is it a fashion faux pas to clash ? lol
