Hi! New Dutch subscriber here. Planning on buying my first hammock and watching a lot of videos on hammocking! Your name came up as the to-go to source for instructions. So...storting here with the suspension options. Cheers for including metric system😁 Awesome juggling skills as well!

Great video! Tip for anyone considering daisy chain webbing suspension: You can reduce weight 3 ways here. 1) Instead of the daisy chain being 100% of your suspension, considering using a tree hugger for the top half of your suspension that goes around the tree. Tree huggers are going to be much lighter as they aren't doubled up. You don't need the heavier daisy chain portion around the tree. 2) Consider lighter weight materials for your tree hugger and your daisy chain. You can get Dutchware Spider 1.5 webbing for your tree straps at 1.5 grams per foot and Dutchware Spider daisy chain straps at 4.89 grams per foot. For example, if I wanted a 14' daisy chain, I would instead get a pair of 7' spider 1.5 tree hugger and a pair of 7' spider daisy chain strap. You connect the daisy chain strap to the end of the tree strap via a larks head knot. Together this suspension would weigh 96 grams (3.4 oz)! This is as light or lighter than some poly/dyneema strap setups that rely on knots. 3) Replace the hardware pieces with 4x Amsteel soft shackles at 4 grams each. Use one for connecting the tree hugger end loop to the tree hugger strap and the other for connecting your hammock continuous loop to the desired part on the daisy chain. Hope this helps!

Shug I have heard you say a million times where to have the webbing in relation to the biener or webbing when wraped around the tree, but it wasnt until this video that I coudl see why or really understand the physics behind all this. Maybe it was the upclose and personal with different types or that I could see the stretching of the threads or webbing that drove it home. Thank you for that. For the dummies out there that still dont get it: when the strap is pulling on the beiner your whole weight is beign placed on the beiner when it is wrapped around the tree the frictionof the tree and strap take most of the weight adn the biender is pulling on the strap for the rest of the weight. The same way horses were held to a hitching post in those old western movies.

depending on where you hang, there is a 1" minimum for your suspension. This is to keep the suspension from crushing into the cambium layer on the tree. LNT

This is NOT criticism! Just a different perspective. Myself and I'd guess a LOT of other folks, watch your Humourous, Fun, Entertaining and Educational videos, but don't ever backpack. But I gotta say, all these camping videos you backpackers create, make me laugh every time the SCALE comes out. HAHAHA - I Motorcycle camp, and am somewhat concerned about bulk, but splitting ounces is NOWHERE on my radar. And it's just my guess, there are probably a lot of us non-backpackers that have never weighed their gear. I want easy, small, fast set up, less "Fiddly" :D -Cheers brother!

If a hammock comes without suspension and you don't want to spend $30 for a suspension system then buy 30' of webbing,cut in half,tie a simple loop on one end and feed around tree and through loop. At the loose end double up the webbing and make a double loop and hook 'biner through double loop. Secure other end of hammock the same way making sure that the distance between trees is what you desire. Before you put weight on hammock place a stick in double loop with 'biner,this will prevent the knot from becoming too tight. Perfect system for those ENO hammocks.

Have you seen a setup using the daisy chain loops where the straps from each tree are connected in middle via carabiner or cinch strap and stretched tight. Then use that as tarp ridgeline and hang hammock from loops as normal. I was told about this but I picture the whole thing sagging too much ...

So when you get in the hammock, it sags. So when you talk about the "rule of thumb" 30 degree angle of the suspension, is that 30 degrees before you get into it or 30 degrees after you get into it? Thanks!
@shugemery
@shugemery 6 лет назад
About 30º before I get in. More or less. Just a starting point.

What about using a daisy chain on a stand that has a hook at the back where you have to put the strap through a fork guide? Would the fork help with the stress? What would the stress be like on a thin hook instead of a tree?
@shugemery

C0deH0wler I think you would be fine. But I have really never done that so I am just speculating. Never know until you try.

by the way.. I cut one of my straps in... ummmm... less than half... and tied mule tape to it. makes it lighter and is still easy on the trees.

Another fine lecture there Mr Emery. I feel a bit of a heel to point out a blooper, but I think it needs to be done... soz. @1:55s you say, "the polyester, or some people call it a polypro strap" Polypro is short for polypropylene, it is cheaper and weaker (by some degree) than polyester. It stretches less than nylon, but more than polyester. I feel like such a nit-picky-nitwit now. I just don't want the Shug to feed the confusion. You da man for the straight dope!
@shugemery
@shugemery 6 лет назад
Thanks. Not even sure anyone sells a polypro strap. Maybe though. A lot spews out of my mouth...bound to be mistakes!
@paultomlin7021
@paultomlin7021 6 лет назад
shugemery - you can pick up cheapo polypro webbing at hardware stores. A lot of the low quality tiedown straps use it. You can use the stuff, but you need to check the load capacity. To be strong enough, it will be heavier than polyester. But it will be cheaper.
@shugemery

I think Hickery uses that. He likes yellow so he can see it and not forget it.

Shug, can you cover what to do when you’re hammock ridgeline is too loose or too tight. i.e. raise /lower the suspension on the tree or lengthen/shorten the suspension. I think that’s an area that confuses people and not a lot out there on it.

@wildfire53575
@wildfire53575 6 лет назад
so the whole weight issue is no issue for me when the gear use is multipurpose. meaning one stone many birds. (2) 15 feet webbing = 30 foot ladder + 4 rated beener endless possibility or 2 emergency harness's , 1 full body harness, 1 rigging system to raise / lower / carry a person.

I bought a Chinese Atlas strap knock off just to play with as a beginner. I used the last loop and it ripped straight through. My GF fell straight onto concrete. It was terrible. After looking closer at the straps the last loop wasn't structurally sewn but was indistinguishable from the others otherwise. It really should have been left un-sewn or sewn together, not in a false loop.

Oops... I accidentally hit send way too early. #1 what kind of rope / cordage/ sewing thread or twine should I use? #2 what kind of rope / cordage does not stretch? #3 how and what kind of cordage should I use for hanging a hammock between too far points?Being lightweight and space conscious is not a concern. Here is my situation. My family and I rented a vacation house for the week and wanted to set up are hammocks in the backyard. There were plenty of trees in the back yard but they were quite a far distance apart. I went to Walmart and bought some Diamond braided poly- something a rather rope. Thinking I would be good to go. And I was wrong. It's stretched more then a snake's mouth eating a moose. I could not get it tight enough or it's not to sag and have your butt on the ground.

G'day Shug, Yay Team ! That was interesting... I have a Hammock, but it lives permanently strung between two Posts, accross a corner of the Verhanda of the Hut I live in...; perfectly situated to watch the Windmill & Solar Panels while drinking a Beer in the afternoon. Segue Warning... Two days ago I was able to video a "Walla-Battle", ie a pair of fully-grown Swamp Wallabies having a serious fight...; during the first 3 minute "Round" I was between 25 &15 yards, so it's not a bad view..., and I was 50 - 75 yds off during the second Round...which went another 4 minuets... If you want to be amazed by some natural strength, skill, stamina, and some savagery...; then feel free to either backtrack me to my Vid's scroll, or title-search YT for "Duelling Swamp Wallabies...; Marsupial Martial Arts !". Both the Combatants were essentially unhurt, and I've also (since) posted videos of their (separate) visits to share my food. I think you'll be interested by how polite and timid they are when dealing with me, compared to how explosively-violent they can be whenever they feel like fighting among themselves. Enjoy... Have a good one, ;-p Ciao !

Ok Mr. Shug have seen all your videos already of all the channel many times... Shugmery's RU-vid follower I declare myself...NOW... I'm wanna know something: How many lbs. do you think it must be able to support or stand EACH suspension line of each side of the hmk to support a person of under 200 lbs. Because I bought 5mm polyester cord and it supports 800 lbs. (Single). Do you thing I can use it like that or you recommend me to double it so it support 1600 lbs. (minus the knot). THANKS Martin from Argentina by the way.
