Hampi - The Secret of Gopurams - Temple Gateways - Achyutaraya Temple 

Gopurams are temple gateways and entrances, usually highly decorated with various gods, dancers, and dwarapalakas. They often dominate the local terrain and sometimes can be seen for miles around, and stand as a beacon of the Hindu religion, rather like a church spire.
Gopurams are interesting in that they often, like these, contain an upper level with rooms, but since they are totally enclosed it is difficult to see how anyone can climb up to these levels. So, what's the secret, and how did they get up there?
