The Alaskan Klee Kai is a small Northern breed recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1997. It was developed in Alaska by Linda Spurlin. The goal of her breeding program was to create a small, companionable version of the racing Alaskan Huskies (a type of dog who has large Northern breed ancestry with possible outcrossing to hounds, retrievers, and other breeds in hopes of increasing endurance and speed while pulling a sled) many had admired for so long. Spurlin's work paid off, as the breed has become popular among families and people who longed to own breeds such as Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes, but simply did not have the time or space to care for the larger breeds. The Alaskan Klee Kai comes in three sizes: Toy, Miniature, and Standard.
