As a black person, this is not black face I see people arguing about it and that is clearly not blackface! Firstly because they didn't have race in mind doing this and they didn't just go "oh we should paint you all black so you can look like a black woman" I think their goal was for her to look like a sculpture all in black, and they did achieve that and it looks damn good!

Little lesson From someone who works at a field where we are contact to do photoshoot with magazine models I wont call this a BLACK FACE. This is just ART, sometimes the companies will contact us to do such theme and it's all on us to do the ART, and most of the time if our client wants a full nude theme WE USUALLY DO SUGGEST THE COLOUR BLACK/GRAY as it's more easy for the coverage and Editing( Well still depending to the whole theme they want) With the BAZAAR I think they want Hyejin(their model) To look like a sculpture. So they could have suggest them to do her skin SHINY BLACK (Which I really think is so nice) If they make her COLOUR WHITE not just its hard to find a paint to cover her whole body properly it will also be also hard to edit to make it look more shiny. If they use a NUDE SKIN COLOUR,, Actually no one will suggest that colour if you want a your model to look like a sculpture coz that colour is mostly only use in cosmetics or skin care stuff.

Okay guys think of it this way. She's supposed to be like a sculture right? And nude for the photo? Then WHAT OTHER COLOR COULD THEY HAVE USED OTHER THAN BLACK. Like really? Nude photo and still censoring areas of the human body so it doesn't turn into a playboy cover? LITERALLY, there is no other color than the color black. Yes, blackface itself is a very real and wrong thing to do. BUT please know the context around blackface FIRST before claiming that anyone who darkens their skin tone is doing blackface. And in case you need a starting point, research Shakespeare. If you argue that anyone darkening their skin tone, whether its the face or the entire body, is committing blackface, boy, you must be against every person who tans their skin. It doesn't make sense right? Yeah, because you don't know the historical context around blackface and WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS.
@MsJackson1330
@MsJackson1330 4 года назад
It seems that you do not understand the history of blackface and need to do more research. Othello was a moor which in modern times we would refer to as a black person. During that time it was common in plays to have characters darken their skin and wear frizzy wigs since these characters were either representative of something evil or a contrast to the good characters. They were devils or demons or just the bad guys. This is blackface. The idea that darkness and in particular blackness is perpetually evil is an archaic idea that exists in so many cultures and black peoples mistreatment and prejudice are a direct result of that. People have feared blackness for centuries and have a right to be upset when they feel like they are being made fun of just because this instance (possibly) is one 2% chance it wasnt done with I'll intent does t mean the other 98% they are wrong or uninformed. You cant tell people to be more educated about their lived experiences. You are denying their feelings and gaslighting.

If yall want to make a point about it not being black face you can do so without trying to belittle someone's trauma and lived experiences. Of course black people are going to be more sensitive and critical of instances like this. You are acting as if black face is uncommon in Korea. Korea has a habit of stealing and profiting off of the bits and pieces of black culture they like while simultaneously belittling and stereotyping black people. It's unfair and insensitive of both of you to say black people are being dramatic and dont know what they are talking about. You are denying their experience because in one instance it is not technically done with bad intentions. People still have a right to question and be upset because this is a country where dark skin and foreigners are shamed but here a korean portraying a foreign and dark skinned aesthetic for a photoshoot is praised especially bc all she can do is wash it off we dont have that luxury. You aren't bothered by the fact people are crying blackface you are bothered that black people are speaking up period and that's your personal issue. The world doesnt get to create a hostile environment for us literally wherever we go and not here our complaints or criticisms.
@saidakassim2106
@saidakassim2106 4 года назад
@@MsJackson1330 of cause she has to wash it off, it is black metallic painting. i agree south korea has had a questionable history with their portrayal of black people in current media. However this is different. Han Hyejin is not doing blackface, and you will have to look at every instance individually. The color black does not equal our race. And i for one, refuse to be reduced to a color. Black people come in all shades and colors, but i have yet to see a black person, who is in the shade metallic off-black.

@@danielpark6068 no it's not the end of story just because you dont want to discuss. How many times do I have to make clear that her intentions dont matter if someone else feels threatened, hurt, or triggered about it. You have to be willing to listen why, stop shutting out conversations on blackness and race because yall are uncomfortable. This is frustrating because I'm constantly saying that while it wasnt blackface the fact that one has to discern whether it is or not means something about the image triggers painful memories and experiences for a group of people. Noone here has asked why it would be triggering. Youd be shocked to hear someone's story.

The photo was not blackface, their comments about her looking like an ethnic cartoon character were insensitive and offensive. The actual photoshoot was not done in malice and should not be taken out of context. Everyone is a little too sensitive on the internet but falsely accusing people of racially charged intentions and actions undermines the efforts of those who attempt to correct actual racist attacks on marginalized groups. Stop policing where it is not necessary. Indians use the swastika as a symbol of good luck and health. Should an Indian be forced to stop just because Nazis malaligned the symbol? Indians also paint their face black when depicting a particular godess. Should they also be asked to stop just because blackface happened in America and so it may hurt the sentiments of blacks? The answer to both is NO. This is why context is important but of course most people on the internet today lack the common sense to understand it.

But this isnt black gave. Shes using black paint to show the lines in her body. Shes also not trying to look bad in any way. There is no correlation.

If yall want to make a point about it not being black face you can do so without trying to belittle someone's trauma and lived experiences. Of course black people are going to be more sensitive and critical of instances like this. You are acting as if black face, especially with I'll intent, is uncommon in Korea. Its not. Korea has a habit of stealing and profiting off of the bits and pieces of black culture they like while simultaneously belittling and stereotyping black people. It's unfair and insensitive to say black people are being dramatic and dont know what they are talking about. You are denying their experience because in one instance it is not technically done with bad intentions. People still have a right to question and be upset because this is a country where dark skin and foreigners are shamed but here a korean portraying a foreign and dark skinned aesthetic for a photoshoot is praised especially bc all she can do is wash it off. we dont have that luxury. You aren't bothered by the fact people are crying blackface you are bothered that black people are speaking up period and it makes you uncomfortable to have to think that society is inherently trash and we as humans are solely responsible for the racism prejudice xenophobia homophobia etc. and that's your personal issue. The world doesnt get to create a hostile environment for us literally wherever we go and not hear our complaints or criticisms.

@@annienguyen8369 so you missed all of what I said to tell me I am jumping on people for criticizing something that is deeply personal and hurtful to my culture and sense of self. I explained all that I needed to explain above. I also didnt "jump" on anyone. You feel the way you do because this isnt a problem personal to you or your culture. That's fine. But until you try to empathize and learn more why people are upset I will not argue with you. Have a nice day.

I get your point but this isn't black face if a person paints their body black doesn't mean it's black face don't Reduce it to just painting body with a black paint there is nothing caricatureish about this there is no mockery of features
@MsJackson1330
@MsJackson1330 4 года назад
@@healthylifeboostdiamond6034 I never said it was black face. I said I can easily see why people would think it is and why'd they be upset. Noone in here gave anyone who thought it was blackface the room to be upset or let them Express why IN THEIR OPINION. It was blackface. All of our experiences are different and we all have different lines of what we tolerate as discrimination. I'm not about to tell someone their line is wrong bc their experience is likely different than mine Telling them.they are wrong is unacceptable especially the way people have here. It's coming across as "yall are always ready to cry racism, this isnt racism, so shutup". Its completely missing the fact that a group of people always have "to cry racism" and analyze seemingly innocent situations because we live in a society where if we dont we are discriminated against and hurt. For me, I dont think its black face buts its still upsetting bc it's another example of dark skin being exoticized and used for profit in a country where its normally demeaned and degraded. Was there ill intent no but there also weren't any conversations amongst koreans on their relationships with dark skin and othering. I am valid in my feelings just like they are valid in theres. Yall are not valid in trying to stop someone for being annoyed or upset with this.

@@healthylifeboostdiamond6034 also blackface wasnt just about a mockery of features. Blackface was a mockery of blackness itself. Before it was popularized in America it was used in plays in Europe's to represent characters who were evil, dirty, corrupt, or not good. The idea that blackness and darkness in itself is inherently evil is an old idea that predates blackface. The didnt draw exaggerated lips or noses but had white actors darken their skin and wear frizzy hair to look like moors (what black people were referred to them) This concept is what has transformed and given rise to racism and prejudice. Many cultures think blackness represents darkness and evil and project that into people with black skin. Racism isnt solely an american concept and dates waaay before blackface and america itself. That means for thousands of years a group of people carried the burdens of being hated and had to discern daily who was discriminating against them and who wasnt. That is generational and passed on. So when someone is sensitive to something, you should think further about why that may be. This is how we keep ourselves mentally and emotionally and physically safe by discerning if this space or thing is welcoming to black people.

Guys I’m not saying she’s a bad person. But to a person of colour she covered her whole face black .. that’s black face .. obvs she didn’t mean it with malintent but it’s still perceived that way. Like I’m half black and half Asian and I found it offensive
