Stone carving is something I have been doing for about seven years. I am self-tau. Beforeore this, I was a dry stone waller often 10 years.
All the chisels I use are from Southern Stone, I have been using the company for 6 years and never had any problems.

Do you suppose that one could do something like this with a slab of cast concrete? It would be very difficult for me to find a slab of sandstone to practice on.

Hi, a tricky one that. I haven't made any videos about marking out as yet, as I have been using my computer to do all the design work, getting all the spacing and sizing right before marking it onto the stone. I do plan on making a video soon around this subject. Sorry that isn't much help.

Hi. How deep should the lettering be? Is there a formula depending on the width? I feel in flat light my letters lose definition

Hi, thank you for watching. There is no right or wrong way, and each job material requires a different approach to lettering. But the most common lettering depth I use on a start house sign would be to aim to get your chisel, when hand carving, facing 1/half 1 on a clock face; that should give you a good overall depth. I hope this helps.

Great work. If possible, can you show and narrate through curtting a letter in real time, say 3 to 5 minutes. Also discussion could incorporate types of stones you have carved with characteristics, from your experience. Grand job.
