Fantastic. In answer to his query around an artist or a tool maker, I suspect there is a shift from tool maker to artisan as your skills grow and people start to seek your bow out specifically. I imagine your at the artisan stage by now. Wonderful looking creations. All the best.

You can get a permit to harvest wood from public lands. It's how many folks in Oregon get firewood every year.

This is the 4th Time I've watched this video ,and I still say you are a tool maker and a craftsman because a tool maker is a craftsman and vice versa ,keep up the great work, there aren't many of us that still take a tree and make longbows ,most have gone to laminated bows,thank you for this video and your beautiful creations.

I saw my Ravenbeak bow, Mithra, on the Longbow shop website and it felt as if the bow chose me. Even if my archery isn't very good, I still enjoy the smooth action of this well made bow. Whether you think of it as a tool or as an artistic creation, they are really beautiful bows.

I work with osage orange, ash and hickory for my bows ,. Yes we are artist of the bowyer world, because not many people make stick bows anymore

Very nice video, I've always considered my bows to be forms of art but I can understand your consideration of it more a weaponry crafting too. Never had my hands on yew, have always wanted to give it a try but I just have a hard time justifying spending so much to get a stave as it doesn't grow here in Ohio. I do enjoy making tri-lam elb tho. They're alittle different then the mollogebet or American flat bows I've built in the past.

Ravenbeak Natureworks Speaking as an Englishman, I am delighted to see that our historical legacy is alive and well all the way across the pond with our US brothers and sisters. By the way in answer to your question regarding whether bowyers here in England back then were seen as artists or people creating a tool? Not only was it a legal requirement for peasants to train with and be proficient with the longbow, it was also a requirement for them to be able to build them 😊 . God I love and am so proud of English bowyer and archery history.

Good yew for making bows is hard to get hence the cost.

Yes. The raw staves themselves are very hard to source and take a long time to season. Let alone the time and expertise of making the.

Our wood is salvaged from the logging industry, but you do have a good point. I wish yew was one of the replanted species within the industry. Unfortunately it is seen as a waste wood

price tag says its more art than tool, they are beautiful, but it doesn't take a master craftsman to build one either. may as well charge me 200 bucks for a pair a grandmas hand made mittens. but im probably just ignorant and bitter i cant afford one.

Perhaps if your grandma harvested all the wool by hand, carded, then spun it, and then knit those mittens they would would be worth $200... :)

yea so thats funny because my family actually raises sheep for wool and she has done that and didnt charge anyone 200 dollars. craftsmanship is not so rare that you can afford to be so snarky bud

Harbinger...sorry that you read it with snarky in mind. I was being serious, not snarky. And added the happy face in the hopes of you seeing that. I legitimately was suggesting that when you do all the pieces, there is a lot of value in the product. I have seen beautiful hand spun wool pieces that cost in that range and are worth every penny. No, you don't have to be a master craftsman to build a bow . And we encourage everyone who's interested to give it a go. It's a love we have for the building and the sport. It also feeds our family.

harbinger 80 to 100 man hours to make a first class bow .plus you need the skill to do it . its not like learning a bit of joinery to mend a step . a first class stave is around £500 plus pounds so if you add it up they are cheap .
