Blacksmith Dave Budd shows the process of hand-forging a Bearded Axe and then crafting the handle harvested from his woodland. Filmed on location in his workshop on the Northern edge of Dartmoor. Part 1 shows the forging of the axe head and the work that goes into that whilst part two covers the heat-treatment and handle making process as well as finishing the item.

For a novice blacksmith (me) this is very interesting, I've always wanted to make a axe this way (by forge welding a peice of steel into the iron) but I've never done forgewelding before, I know that you need (or should atleast use) Borax. I've made a axe before though, I made it out of a old hammer, so I basicaly only needed to flatten the hammer side, saw of the backside, shape it the way I wanted it, grind it to the exact shape + a bevel, then heattreat it. :)

How could I obtain the material needed for the head of the axe? I want to try and make one for myself but I am not sure how much material is needed for the head or how to get it.
@calebjust1292
@calebjust1292 8 лет назад
Decent materials could be hard to find, it really depends on your location. Also, try practicing this method/ technique before actually attempting it. Im not trying to insult your experience in this, but making a crappy first weapon and using the best materials for said crappy weapon could be very disheartening and, in some cases, you will stop perfecting this skill. Best of Luck!

@jackolsen5250
@jackolsen5250 7 лет назад
ethan shipley sorry for being so late, but I saw no one responded, and most times a good drift, and optionally a drill, and a good hammer, you can probably guess what to do, simply drill some holes, and use the hammer to shove the drift in
