I’ve been scouring and searching for this exact video! I’m visually impaired and want to learn how to quilt, but do not want to use a machine, so this is just what I needed! Thank you! I can’t wait to begin! Now, to find my material to start! Oh, and a thimble!

This video makes me reminisce. When my mom was a girl, she was taught how to sew her clothes by hand. Then later she bought a Singer treadel sewing machine. I am 72 years old and love your videos, Leah. 😍

I have a treadle too! LOL! That was my plan for the next video. I'm so happy you enjoyed this tutorial. Please share it with your friends, kids, or grandkids!

Liz Ryan: I am 70 yo and when I learned to hand stitch in Quebec, we were obliged to sew the "back stitch " and not this way. It what we called the machine stitches by hand. It was more solid!! I always sew with the back stit!

@@claudettemonty4077 I think a running stitch is o.k. in a quilt because the whole thing is going to be quilted in the end, so these individual seams don't need to be as strong as in clothing.

Great video. I have two tips. First, thread 3 needles at a time, same theory as winding 2 or 3 bobbins before starting a project. Just be careful they don't tangle up. Second, running the thread through beeswax helps keep it from knotting when you sew. In addition, it strengthens the thread. When I was a teenager, I bought really cheap thread as I had a very limited budget, but the beeswax kept it from breaking.
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 6 лет назад
Thank you Dawn! I'm not a big fan of beeswax or thread coats because they tend to attract and lock dirt in the stitching. But it's good to know that it can strengthen the thread if that's needed!

There is something relaxing about hand work. I dont do it often but I enjoy it when I do. I also like hand work for my daughter, makes me much less anxious than when she tries to sew using my machines.

This is great because it's sometimes hard to find good hand-sewing tutorials for beginners for particular projects. It's even harder to find a good one that's left-handed. Thanks so much!

I'm so excited to learn about your book, and mission to promote hand sewing, especially for children! I started hand sewing as a child and always found it enjoyable, the way some people enjoy knitting. I love making doll clothes by hand, because it is so much easier to be accurate when dealing with tiny seams especially on 3D shapes. I have also pieced a few small quilts by hand, like a grandmother's flower garden and a nine patch variation with pinwheels. It is wonderful to have a little quiet work to take along, that fits into a Ziploc bag in my purse! Looking forward to your future videos!

Thank you so much for this video! You are an excellent teacher, taking the time to point out the little things like how you are holding your thumb and where the needle is going. I used to machine quilt, but due to a spinal cord disorder, I can't anymore and I am pretty much stuck in my recliner. I thought hand piecing was much more complicated than this - I'm going to dig through my stash of charm blocks and get started tomorrow!! Thank you!!!
@LeahDay

Wonderful Peggy! I'm so happy to hear you found this video helpful and you'll be giving hand piecing a try. Nope, it really isn't complicated. You might also want to try English Paper Piecing too. It's a bit more complicated, but you won't need to cut your pieces so accurately because the papers are already cut the exact size.

I love to quilt. I love to garment sew. I love to craft sew. but..... I do not like to hand sew. I even machine sew my quilt bindings on. I found a book to show me how to sew couture techniques by machine. I marvel at those that hand sew. Maybe some day.... :) Any way I do love to read and will be checking out Mally the Maker. Congratulations on that!

It's perfectly fine NOT to like something! I really hate gardening with a passion. I've finally reached the point that I can say it's okay for me to not be into that and never feel pressure to stick another plant in the ground. LOL! It's okay!

Thanks for this video! I’ve always machine pieced but I’m currently in India with no machine and plenty of time so I thought maybe I’d give hand piecing a try 😅. I recently used your “quilt as you go” method for making a t shirt quilt for a friend. I really appreciate your videos that are clear and slow enough to follow without talking down to us, so thanks!!😊

Thanks for this tutorial on hand piecing. My mom hand pieced and hand quilted ALL her quilts. I machine piece and machine quilt but would like a project or two for take-a-longs on road trips. I also just ordered your book for our granddaughter - age 10. I think she will enjoy it. Thanks again, Carol

Hand stitching is more time consuming, but is great to have for trips or whenever you're sitting and waiting. Just know that you can always switch to machine piecing if you want!

I'm a lefty too. And I like to hand sew. It seems that we are better at using our right hand than right handed people use their left hand. I teach crochet and sometimes I try it with my right hand, it's tricky but I manage. I have a bunch of 5 inch squares. I'm going to put them all together for a scrap quilt.

It’s better to draw a square, just use a square template. I use plastic templates. There’s absolutely no reason to be doing guess work. I also do not use a knot to start. I take a few stitches forward, then go backwards a small amount and then continue sewing forward again. Knots add extra bulk and gets in the way of making your points. You also have an easier time, if you wait to press the hand sewn block until you’re finished with the block. If you press during the making, you’ll have Seams that get in your way! Thank you for doing a video Leah, I’m teaching a hand sewn pieced quilt block. I enjoyed your video

Do you advise using doubled thread?
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 6 лет назад
Yes, I like piecing with doubled thread. It makes tying the knot easier and your needle doesn't fall off the end.

If you backstitch the whole way could you press it open?

I wouldn't for hand piecing. Pressing to one side is the most common advice when stitching pieces together by hand.
