Hello, I've been asked many times how to actually start off a piece of hand quilting. In this week's video, I thought I'd show you how to have a go at hand quilting, it really is easy, if you can do a running stitch you can definitely do this. Hand quilting is such a nice way to add some texture and a little extra to textile projects, and when you're feeling a little more confident maybe you'll have a go at that whole cloth quilt you've always dreamed of? As always thanks for watching and enjoy!

If you would like to know a little more about the history of quilting watch this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DezQ1uKplF4.html Please remember it was made when I was just starting out on RU-vid, the research still stands though. 💚

Thanks for the tips. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who misses a stitch or two on the back. I hand quilt all my quilt projects. Tanks for the details.

Thank you, I've always gone for the tiniest stitches, but at 75 my hands get quite achy, so I am loosening up. You're right it's supposed to be fun, and relaxing. I've been quilting since I was 8, my grandmother had me making my own doll quilts. If it wasn't right I had to remove the stitches, and begin again. I didn't mind then, because it was my grandmother teaching me.

I've always wanted to know how to get one knot on top of another so thank you. Years ago I was shown that I had to do a rocking motion but like your attitude, we're meant to have fun, no stress. As always love your video🤗

Another great video. I'm so glad you're not all about perfection!! You're a fantastic teacher. I attended an online free embroidery summit this past week and was so inspired! You had covered many of the stitches in your embroidery videos. Hand sewing is so relaxing to me. Thanks again for all your videos!

What a relief to find your video ! I'm just about to hand quilt my first quilt & have been researching the subject. I watched another experienced quilter who demonstrates the technique where the needle is balanced between two thimbles (one on the middle finger on the quilt top & the other on the middle or index finger underneath), whilst the thumb of the top hand pulls the fabric away when the needle comes back up. The quilter admits that it's a difficult technique requiring much practice but that it is much easier on the wrist & arm joints if you want to do a lot of hand quilting. Instinctively, I'd started quilting as you do but would like to know if you have experinced any wrist or arm pain in your many years of hand quilting. Kind regards from the French Pyrenees.

What a great idea this is to practice I’m going to start doing this and I wasn’t sure if I want to use a hoop or not but now I’m thinking about just getting one they have it anyway they make sort of square shaped ones but everybody seems to have round ones on here, and they still plenty of round ones.

For quilting like this do you go through all three layers? Also do you have to have an embroidery hoop or can you do the hand stitching without one?

Thank you for this video. I have been quilting for years bit have never hand quilted a quilt. In tue beginning of your video, as you pulled out your templates you had what appeared to be a dragon wing. (I will admit that is why I clicked on your video 😆). Anyways do you have a video or pictures of a quilt you've done with that? I am intrigued.
@eleanorbirchellhughes
@eleanorbirchellhughes 2 месяца назад
Thanks for your comment. The dragon wing is part of a template for an applique I did based on the Welsh flag, I made a video on it a few years ago, I'll see if I can find and copy the link for you.

I am attempting to make a bed quilt for my daughter using EPP shapes(well two shapes lol) and copying the Lucy Boston idea. As I love hand sewing. Could you tell me please should I be washing the fabric first as I'm using mainly red and white with some blue? Can I nag for more videos time permitting of course😁😜. Take care🤗
@eleanorbirchellhughes
@eleanorbirchellhughes 2 года назад
Hi Angela, ahh the thorny question of washing fabric, I mostly wash mine if they are going in a quilt that will be washed. Also reds in particular need special attention they often have a little extra dye that needs to come out before you put them next to white or pale fabrics. My hints for washing would be put in the machine on a standard 40 degree wash (Warm if in the US) and add 1/3 cup of white vinegar to the rinse/ fabric softner stage, the vinegar acts as a fixative if there is any remaining dye after washing. Line dry if possible, or stop the dryer before your fabric turns to super heated cardboard (still very slightly damp). If your fabric is floppy after washing because all the stiffener has been rinsed away lightly starch with spray starch on the back of the fabric and iron on the front. Hope that helps and good luck with your quilt.

What about coverlets? I'm from the U.S. and have seen/ heard of so called coverlets from places like the UK, and Australia that don't have batting (wadding). What's the scoop on these kinds of quilts? Do you still quilt them? How are they done, and finished compared to actual quilts?
@eleanorbirchellhughes
@eleanorbirchellhughes 2 года назад
Hi Shannon, coverlets are really interesting, that's why I said "a quilt is usually three layers", if you think about quilting as a sort of family tree it's ancestors are quilting for utilitarian purposes of added either warmth or padding and embroidery just for decoration. Add in Kantha work from India and Sashiko from Japan, both of those are considered types of quilting but are usually only two pieces fabric! Coverlets are often embroidered from the front but hold front and back together and I have seen coverlets held together with running stitch in designs that have echoes of 17th and 18th century embroidery and quilting designs. Hmmm maybe I should make a video 😉. I'll put a link to one that covers some but not all of the history in the pinned comment.

@@eleanorbirchellhughes I would love to know more about these so called quilts. Where I live it's very warm (yet oddly people here still always add batting) it seems like coverlets would be a nice way to add a decorative covering to my bed that wouldn't be as warm.
