The emphasis seems to be on teeny tiny stitches or great big stitches. This is about the size of stitches that I get that I haven't thought was good enough. Well... my thinking has changed! Love this!

Thank you 🙏🏾 for sharing and thank you for supporting my channel. You know I’m teaching myself to hand stitch I’m thinking about how to quilt my grandmother’s flower garden quilt. I love watching you hand stitching I hope you’re having a blessed day God bless you and your family
I learned a lot by watching your video but I wish I could see you quilt the actual stitches. Pale blue floss on the white and black busy fabric was just impossible to see. Your motions and descriptions of your technique were helpful though and I enjoyed your on-camera style. Thank you!
Hi Cate! I'm glad that you liked that video. We here are still having some challenges when it comes to those close up shots and I'm sorry that you couldn't see what I was doing. We will try to re film this but I'm not sure when. I hope you have a blissful week ahead. Thank you for watching and supporting our little channel.

Your quilting is lovely. Looks like the big stitch method. I love how using the different coloured floss created a colourful design on a somewhat plain backing. I am still new at hand quilting.
Hello Christine! This quilt is a free pattern and the playlist is called the "Sunflower Quilt". Please feel free to pick up that pattern for yourself. We have started a face book group and we are having our virtual sew date on Oct 22, 2022. I would love to chat and sew with you. Hello! I would love to send you an invitation to the International Stitch Marathon. Please email me so I can send you the Zoom link details. My quilting hoop is a big wooden oval. I used it quilt on in the past to hand quilt. The long ends of the hoop rest nicely on the arms of my rocking chair; and, they allow me to use both hands to work on the quilt. I have quilted on top of a table with out a hoop. I usually do that when I am repairing a quilt (replacing a patch). Your quilt is beautiful. Thank you for this video.
Hi Arvetta. I'm glad that you liked this video. I should try to work with that big circle hoop from my mom's but I can quilt so much faster with the method I just showed you. I hope you have a wonderful week ahead! Thanks for watching and supporting our little channel.
My goodness, Brenda. I hadn't tried hand quilting because it seemed too fussy. I might try it now on a table runner I'll be piecing. You are such a great encourager!
Hello Dotty! I just love hand quilting and hand piecing, it takes on a meditation state with me. I also agree to start with something smaller for your first hand quilting project as it can become a daunting project if you find it is not to your liking. I hope you have fun hand quilting your table runner. Thanks for your kind comments and your support of our little channel.
Hello Lili! I'm so happy that you like this video. I love doing hand sewing and hand quilting at night as it helps me relax. I hope you have a delightful week ahead. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
You are so welcome and I'm glad you liked this. We are also staring a fun sew along in Dec 2021 that is a free pattern. The sew along is this quilt shown in this video. Thanks so much for your support and kindness!
Hello Janet! I'm glad that you liked this. I do all my hand quilting this way and I fined that it is so much easier to do. We have a Facebook group and our next virtual sew date is Sept 3, 2022. The Zoom link is in the show notes below and I hope you can come to sew and hang out. I hope you have a fabulous week ahead! Thanks for watching and supporting this channel.
Just what I need! A massive thank you! I am just about to thread baste a huge story book/photo quilt 100% hand sewn. I was debating whether to put it on a frame my husband made or do it as you have demonstrated. This is my first sewing project ever and I’m inexperienced. Took me 20 months to get here. I have loved the meditation as I sewed as I am a nurse in this very challenging time. I’m just going to do curvy big stitch quilting from right to left straight across so it should be easier. There are some of the pictures that I will accentuate and need to go round. Thank you also for showing the backside of your quilt as I was wondering about the different colours because my quilt is reversible with a “frozen theme” at the back. This video is giving me the confidence that I can do it. Thank you once again.😘 greetings from Australia.
Hello Hazel! Your quilt sounds wonderful! I would love to send you an invitation to the International Stitch Marathon. Please email me so I can send you the Zoom link details. I can find my email in the "About" section on RU-vid or try to email me at : brenda@conqueringmountscrapmore.com or you can send me a message at my Instagram account. I would love to send you an invitation. Thank you for your kind comments and for supporting our little channel
Hi Traci! Welcome aboard! I just find this method of hand quilting so much easier on my hands. I hope you have a fabulous week ahead. Thanks for watching and supporting our little channel
Thank you for this! I am making a baby quilt for my baby boy due this winter. I machine stitched the quilt top together. but I am hand quilting it all together now. Although my stitches aren't perfect, I am having so much fun! I sew all my own clothes, but I never really thought I would get into quilting. Quilting is much different than sewing clothes; it is slower and satisfying in a different way. I am using hand quilting thread that is not as thick as I would like, but that is all I could find at the store. I did not think of using embroidery floss. I could try doubling up on the quilting thread I have.
Hello Amy! I'm glad that you liked this video. When I used Embroidery floss, I use 3 strands for extra strength but you could use any good quality thread. We also have a Facebook group and are currently voting on a virtual sew date for Oct 2022. If you are interested, please join the group and vote too! I hope you have a joyful week ahead! Thank you for watching and supporting our little channel.
Hi Dorothy! I'm glad that you lied this video. I made this video because everyone thinks you need a hope to quilt with but nobody know what happens if you can't manage a hoop, LOL. I hope you have a beautiful week ahead. Thank you for watching and supporting our little channel.
I'm enjoying watching you do this. I do hand quilting too sometimes, and I have a pair of the smaller pvc hand frames, and a bigger one that measures 39x28 that is a small squarish floor frame. I also have a large wooden floor frame that I got almost 30 years ago. I've used the big frame and the small hand frames, but not the small floor frame yet. I found a thread conditioner called Thread Heaven and love it. It works for all types if thread, and I even use it for hand embroidery. I haven't tried hand quilting with the heavier stuff like you're using but planning to soon since I have a huge container of embroidery floss. Thank you for sharing this.
You are so welcome. I just love an evening of hand piecing or quilting. My husband and I are thinking of selling our thread conditioner as well but we have so many irons in the fire now I don't think we will get that done until 2022. Thank you for your kind comments and supporting our little channel.
Hi Connie. You are so welcome. I just love an evening of hand piecing or quilting. I hope you have a wonderful week ahead! Thank you for your kind comments and supporting our little channel.

Hello Jennis! I'm delighted that you like this video. I find hand quilting at night very relaxing! The next virtual sew date is on April 1 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come. I hope you have a gentle week ahead. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
Thank you for this demo, Brenda. What little hand quilting I have done was done using a hoop, which I found quite difficult to handle. I think it would have been easier if I sat at a table and rested the hoop on it. This might be an option for me. Your stitches look very uniform. Great job!
Hello Brenda. This is so fascinating to watch. Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge here. I have a very large quilt top that my elderly aunt did by hand when she was learning to sew as a young girl. I so wish to finish quilting it by hand for myself since she is no longer with us. I note that you are using a Bingo table of sorts to support your work. I, too, have an awful time mastering hoops of any size. My natural tendency is to keep both hands free like you do when stitching anything. Can you explain the proper quilt sandwich and needles to use when I begin this challenge? Where is it best to start? From the center out or from end to end? I have difficulty with thimbles too and choose to feel the prick while stitching trying to be careful. Thanks for your suggestions. I will be a frequent guest now!🪡🥰🧵

I have just discovered you and I loved your video. You are so easy to follow!!!!!!! I am going to subscribe and because I love this so much I’m going to play it again while I’m working on my string quilt. When I’m done with my piecing I’m going to use your method big stitching. Thank you so much!!!!! I can’t wait to see more of your videos. Also I would just be happy if you would do more of these and just have a conversation.

Great video! I have tried all different sizes of hoops and I just can’t use one. I love to hand quilt and use this very method that you have demonstrated…..thank you! Would love your recipe for thread conditioner!
Hi Cheryl! I'm glad I was able to help you with hand quilting. We have not made a video about the thread conditioner yet but it is on our list of things to film. If you are interested, the Mystery Sew along starts on June 30, 2022 and it is free here on this channel. I hope you have a wonderful week ahead. Thanks for watching and supporting our little channel.
Hello Monelleny! I'm delighted that you liked our video. I now have one of those palm thimbles as well as a needle puller but thanks for mentioning this tool. The next Psychedelic Snowflake quilt video will drop on May 1 and it is going to be a free sew along. I hope you have a joyful week ahead! The next virtual Zoom sew date is on May 4, 2024 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
It is easier for me, also, to just quilt by hand. I've tried hoops, floor frames, lap frames, etc. I either hold my safety pin basted quilt in my lap or on a higher table while sitting on my 3/4 stool. Much more satisfying, while "breaking" all those "rules" from decades ago. 😊
Hello Wendy! I'm happy that you enjoyed my video. The Psychedelic Snowflake quilt is going to be a free sew along this fall. I hope you have an amazing week ahead! The next virtual sew date is on Sept 9, 2023 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
Hi Brenda! I recently found your channel and so enjoy spending time with you. I hand quilted two quilts recently and just love it. Also. Love your template “old school “ is awesome.
Hello Della! I'm so happy that you liked this! Yes, sometimes, I find it easier to do the "old school" method like I was taught then looking for the "new and improved". Plus, if you are a beginner quilter, this is an expensive hobby to buy all those gadgets! I hope you have a wonderful week ahead! Thank you for watching and your support of our little channel!
Just found this video loved it - I quilt this way too, couldn’t get on with using a hoop! Did you Make videos of this quilt as you made it? I would love to watch them.
Hello Linda! I'm glad that you liked our video. I have not made a longer video of me quilting by hand, sorry! The Psychedelic Snowflake quilt video will drop at the first of the month and it is going to be a free sew along. I hope you have a carefree week ahead! The next virtual Zoom sew date is on Feb 3, 2024 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
Hello Rosie! I'm glad that you lie this video. I could never manage a loop but I find I can still make lovely hand quilted quilts by doing the quilting this way. I hope you have a joyful day ahead. Thank you for watching and your kind comment as they mean so much to us here.
Hello Melanie! I'm happy that you enjoyed my video. You make a quilt sandwich of backing, batting and the quilt top, then pin or thread baste in place. Some use the spray glue and they work well. The Psychedelic Snowflake quilt is going to be a free sew along this fall. I hope you have a fabulous week ahead! The next virtual sew date is on Aug 5, 2023 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
@@conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509 thank you for getting back so quickly. I’m looking forward to trying you hand Quilting and excited about the pattern. I’m hank you for the invite😊
I have tried to use a thimble but I promise myself to keep trying. I do get a heavy callas build up on my finger which helps with the hand quilting. Thanks for watching and your kind comments.
Love the video! Hand quilting is such a comforting thing to do. I wonder about your needle case … do you have a how-to video for making a case like it? Just curious. Thank you for sharing! 🙂
Hi Susan! I'm glad you liked this video. No, I don't have a video on how to make a needle case but I will add this to the growing list of videos to film. I hope you have a wonderful week ahead and thanks for the video idea. Thank you for watching and supporting our little channel.
Do you use a thimble on the hand hidden under the quilt? I don't think I could do that without one ...I'd be bleeding all over the underside if I didn't. 😆🤣
I don't have much luck wearing a thimble. I have tried to use one for the bottom as well as the top when my fingers are sore but I can quilt faster without any thimbles and I do build up a heavy callas. Thanks for watching and your comment!
Hello Cindy! I'm glad you like my video. I could never use a frame and just found it awkward. Big stitch quilting is so lovely and adds lots of texture. We are getting lessons ready for Curves Bootcamp, which is coming us after the Nosegay sew along. Our Facebook group will be voting for the next virtual sew date for December. If you are interested, please join and I would love to chat with you. I hope you have a happy week ahead. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
Hi Brenda , Pat calling from nz. Thanks for your posts , very helpful . I am just contemplating doing a hand all over quilt . I am thinking of doing a white quilt for my grand daughter and was wondering if you have any comments about using silk thread ? I have heaps of it but no experience regarding it’s suitability , wearability or any other comments you may care to make . I have done three hand quilts already but never one where the quilting would be so obvious . The quilt will be white . Any input would be much appreciated.❤ 😮 cheers Xxp
Hello Pat! I'm thrilled that you like this video. Silk thread will work well for a white quilt so my advice is "Go for it because it will be beautiful"! I have used Silk thread with batiks and it sews like a dream with some thread conditioner like bees wax. The Facebook group is using the room feature in the group for impromptu sew dates. The February virtual sew date is on Feb 11, 2023 and starts at 9:00am to 5:00pm MST. If you are interested, please come. I hope you have an amazing week ahead. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
You are quilting the way grandma showed us girls how to piece! The only difference is, in hand piecing. You take a backstitch after pulling the needle through! Grandma didn't paperpiece ! 😊
Hello Annette! I'm delighted that you liked my video. I hope you have a blissful week ahead! The next virtual sew date is on July 13, 2024 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.

Hello, I was looking for hand quilting instructions and found your channel. I have a question regarding the embroidery thread. I’m repairing an heirloom quilt and there is no embroidery thread used. What kind of thread do you recommend I should use?I had to repair and replace many squares. Old and new fabric makes it really difficult (old fabric has stretched and is torn with thin spots) but I’m now getting ready to attach the batting and the back of the quilt. I’m also thinking about purchasing one of those hoops. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Hello EM-mi5yj! I'm delighted that you liked our video. I used embroidery thread because that is what I had on hand. If you want to do a big stitch, you could use either Perle 8 or 12 cotton thread. If you want to do a more traditional stitch, you could use a strong 50 weight thread (I would double the thread but most quilts only had one thread). My mom used a large hoop but I can't manage it well. I would suggest that you buy a quilting hoop that is larger than the block you are trying to quilt. The Psychedelic Snowflake quilt video will drop at the first of the month and it is going to be a free sew along. I hope you have a fabulous week ahead! The next virtual Zoom sew date is on April 6, 2024 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
Hi Brenda. This is my second comment on your channel. I’ve started my quilting as you’ve demonstrated and it is easier than I thought it would be. Just one question please. I have several photos on my reversible quilt, front and back though they are not back to back. They are 4.5x6 inches. I am doing big stitch quilting between them. Can you advise me on how to quilt the layers together without going through the photos please? Should I just go through two layers with the big stitch and then flip the quilt around after and quilt through two layers again? Not sure I’m making sense. Thank you.
Hello Hazel! I would love to send you an invitation to the International Stitch Marathon and see that project you are working on, and I would be able to give you better advice on your project. Please email me so I can send you the Zoom link details. I can find my email in the "About" section on RU-vid or try to email me at : brenda@conqueringmountscrapmore.com or you can send me a message at my Instagram account. Hello Angela! I'm glad that you liked my video. Yes, start in the middle of your quilt and word to the outer edge. The next virtual sew date is on July 13, 2024 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
Sorry you misunderstood my question. I was talking about the actual quilt you were hand quilting. I thought it looked such an interesting deign that I wondered if you had ever make a video on making that actual quilt. Sorry I didn’t make myself clear.
Hello Laurie! I'm delighted that you enjoyed our video! I use a longer needle because of my arthritus issues with my hands and I find it is easier to hold on to. I hope you have a happy week ahead! The next virtual sew date is on Nov 2, 2024 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
Hello Jenny! I'm so delighted that you like my video. I have used 3 strands of embroidery cotton but you could use as many as you want or use Pearl 8 cotton. We have a Facebook group and we are having our virtual sew date on Oct 22, 2022. If you are interested, please join and I would love to chat with you and the zoom link is in the most current video. The Nosegay quilt which will start this week. I hope you have a happy and creative week ahead. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.

Hi Blissful. The fastest way to get blood off the fabric is using your spit, yes is it gross but your spit has the enzymes to remove blood without damaging the fabric. I hope you have a wonderful week ahead! Thank you for watching and your kind comment mean so much to us here.
@@conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509 thank you! SPIT works for me! I learned so much watching your video. Now to learn how to embroider. I finally got the labels sewn on my great Grandson's wonky crazy quilt. Thanks for your great video and replying!
Hi Nancy! I use 3 strands of floss to hand quilt with. But you could use just two strands of 50wt thread. I also use a thread conditioner that makes the thread or floss guile thru the quilt and doesn't make knots. I hope you have a beautiful week ahead. Thanks for watching and supporting our little channel.
Hello Debrat777! I'm delighted that you liked my video. Yes, I have done that and you just have to be careful and try to match the size of the stitching. The next virtual sew date is on Nov 4, 2023 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
hi! I’m looking to get into quilting because it’s something that my great grandmother and her foremother’s before her used to do, but it was never a skill that got passed down to me. May I ask why in hand quilting you might want to use a specific size or type of needle? I’ve found in my handsewing that I feel really comfortable using the smallest needle at my disposal, but I also know that there are a lot of gaps in my sewing knowledge as I’ve only been formally taught very little
Hello Ugly Peach 6272! I'm happy that you liked our video. You need to pick a needle that is comfortable because you may be holding that needle for quite some time. I prefer a Sachiko needle because they are strong. The Psychedelic Snowflake quilt video will drop at the first of the month and it is going to be a free sew along. I hope you have a blissful week ahead! The next virtual Zoom sew date is on March 2, 2024 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us.
