Hand-sewn buttonholes have a unique charm that machine-made ones lack. By using a buttonhole stitch, a variation of the blanket stitch, you can achieve beautifully detailed buttonholes. Buttonhole stitches are closely packed blanket stitches with two loops-one over and one under the needle.
Mark buttonholes before attaching buttons - 1/2 inch from the edge of 1/2 of the button as overlap edge from the edge of the button to the edge of the garment.
Women’s garments typically have buttonholes on the left. Interfacing the area strengthens it.
