HAND SHARPENING DRILLS OLD SCHOOL in your home shop using a drill point gauge and a bench grinder!

Is it possible to accurately sharpen a metal cutting drill bit in a home shop without a dedicated drill sharpening machine? The answer is yes! A little patience and some practice will be required as well as a bench grinder and a drill point gauge. To learn how to use a bench grinder safely take a look at my BENCH GRINDER 101 video (link below). The difficulty with hand sharpening drill bits is getting all the required geometry in a single movement. Hold, push, pivot without rotating and measure is what needs to be mastered. It would be nice, in order to better understand why this three part movement is important, to watch my HOW METAL CUTTING DRILL BITS WORK VIDEO (link below). Drilling with a poorly sharpened or worn drill bit is very frustrating so take some time and learn how to sharpen drills because machining should be fun! Not frustrating. As for all THATLAZYMACHINIST videos, this video is produced for novice , garage or beginner machinists. You can find all my videos as well as project drawings and course notes on my website THATLAZYMACHINIST.COM

Thanks for understanding that I am a professional toolmaker and teacher but I am not a professional video producer (and it shows). I produce these videos for fun as a little retirement project that lets me give back a little of what was passed on to me by so many amazing trades people most of whom, sadly, are no longer with us. My Father was a machinist. He showed me drill sharpening when I was 12. I never incorporated the practice......at 60...with more leisure time I am now tinkering....and find myself learning sharpening... your demonstration inspires me. My son will be shown. Thank you.

A nicely presented video with clear instructions on how to do, why do it, and what if done other way. Practically, all my life I have been a self taught DIY enthusiast in multitrade. I wouldn't grade myself as professional, but rather well educated, and knowledgeable to a certain level. Sharpening drill bits is one of those things I try not to think of, as I failed 99.9% of my few total attempts in over 40 years, and because replacing a damaged drill bit nowadays is easy, cheap, and without hassle. I ended up with a big pile of drill bits that I collected for the day I decide to give it another try. You somehow made the process look so easy, and I am confident I will succeed this time, you deserve all the credit for that. Well done.

Dear Marc I want to thank you for all of your videos. My father owned machine shops and I spent alot of time in the shop as a helper back in the 70s. He tried hard to teach me the ways of a good machinist. He passed young and I never really learned anything of value for today's world. I found your channel and I truly believe that you have a gift and want to thank you for your time Although I'm 54 now I am determined to learn more to honor his memory . Although I will never be a full fledged machinist I will however have the knowledge he wanted to pass on to me through watching your tutorial videos. Thank you again for your skills and for sharing the basics of a trade that seems to be getting over run by technology. Regards, Don O'Day

Don, God’s good rest to your da, I’m sorry to read that he was taken from you when you were young. Bless you for honoring his memory by building your skills. My own father left us when I was just about to come of age, but he had time to pass on to me a respect and desire for working with my hands. I try to honor him in the same way you do your da.

Hi Rolando, some things I have learnt by figuring it out but most things I know have been shared with me by journeymen when I was an apprentice. That is how things should be because knowledge that is kept secret is know-how that is lost. Thanks for watching my videos and for taking the time to write, Marc.

I'm less than 2 years into this trade and I've self learned to sharpen w/o a gauge by eye and technique. I rough out the reliefs first rotating the drill towards the lip while rolling the drill across the wheel, cool it off fully and then hold the lip position static with no pressure just to bevel the roughed in relief to make the cutting lip. I then rotate the drill in my hand preserving its other orientations and do the other lip, then I check for symmetry and run a stone twice on each lip to deburr it and remove the razor edge which is prone to chipping. It wasn't taught to me but it works and I've drilled countless 2.5 inch holes 10+ inches deep in material like 4340 on a lathe w/o pilot drilling because I've found that drills need chisel engagement to not chatter and fracture.
@simpleman283
@simpleman283 3 месяца назад
I have always believed a 1/4 pilot hole was a good thing. My god man, that is a humongous hole to drill w/no pilot hole.
@phalanyx3478
@phalanyx3478 3 месяца назад
@@simpleman283 I still do it this way. I now freehand grind a split point so it's even easier to do.

Hi Marc, Thanks for making these videos. Always good to learn something new. Not in this video but love the quotes in the back ground by the mill. Sometimes i get it right sharpening drills, other days i mess them up. You defiantly taught me something new and i will try that. Think i rotate...bad boy. Question regarding this video. Did you make the drill bit gauge? Got me thinking of making one now. Keep up the good work Best regards, Paul

In the shop that I worked in almost all drills were ground by hand. The dominant practice in the shop was to relieve the trailing edge of each lip with a sheer straight angle drop off towards the spiral flute leaving only a narrow 12° drop off just behind the cutting edge. Have you ever seen this type of drill sharpening method? It seem to be quite effective in the drills did not show any signs of being weekend by this process.

Marc, am I correct that the central web gets thicker from the tip to the shank of the drill bit? So, in the case of a drill that was severely damaged like your example, would not the chisel tip become wider? Would this reduce the drill's cutting efficiency if a pilot hole were not used? Could the web thickened be reduced at the tip by grinding with a small rotary tool?
@OldIronShops

you could split the tip and make it cut easer

Now that I know this is a voice over it drives me mad that the voice and mouth movements are a bit out of sync. LOL. Thank you for the information. I've been tossing bits away for years. I either work in wood, stainless or brass. For the stainless and brass it was important it all looked perfect as in: They were paying for a product that was new. It had to be perfect...So I used new bits. Is there a good alignment tool for doing this?

Hi Jasper, I would not sharpen à drill less than 3/16" with this method. A touch grinding technique would be preferable (I may someday produce a video). Also small drills are difficult to film properly for an amateur (videographer) such as myself. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to write, Marc

I've always used similar technique but rotated slightly whilst hinging the drill against the grinder.... what is the advantage of not rotating? If I don't rotate the drill the back of the web does not get ground with enough clearance which hinders cutting ability? Obviously your technique works but I can't get my head around how 😅

I can't understand that either, where he shows the close up of the sharpened drill, the trailing edge seems like it would hold the cutting lips off the work. I would have ground that off at a steeper angle
