I like a challenge. 0.5mm pitch? Breakout boards are for wimps!

Super brave attempt my friend ...balls of steel stuff there..... My advice is to use flux and wrap copper wire around the tip of your iron to reduce the tip size

I used to work as an assembler for a satellite company. I am very good at doing micro soldering. Without the aid of a microscope at the time I was able to solder a $2000 chip with solid gold pins to anything you wanted. Even run jumpers. If you bent the pin then bent it back it would break off. Not the easiest thing to work with.

For easier soldering, you can bent odd pins upwards and even pins downwards to get more spacing between pins.

Amazing! You're the masochist :) How do you film it? What is your rig? i guess it's some camera on a rigid stand that is hardly pressed (by a clamp) to the table. P.S. is the IC working after this?

Nicely done. Thanks! 🙂👍 It seems somewhat pointless to use such a small device when you're soldering it to such a large area of board. Much easier to use a larger form factor in that circumstance.

Why don't just superglue dead bug on its back and avoid fuss with kapton?
@mitxela
@mitxela 7 лет назад
Yes, I've done that a few times, but embarrassingly I always end up forgetting which is pin 1 and wiring it up back-to-front. Much safer to keep it the right way up!
@hippynurd
@hippynurd 6 лет назад
You could mark the underside for pin one, or just bend pin one a little bit, so that its obvious when its flipped over, then solder that pin last, after you straighten it back. If you really need to be able to see the part number, then soldering it upside down isnt going to work for you, but you could solder the wires onto the part, then flip it and solder those wires to the board.

... plus Kapton is cool! Kapton transforms everything it touches. Before, it's just a DIY circuit board... add Kapton and it's a part of a spaceship....... woosh!

No breakout boards are for those who are intelligent and won't want half-assed crap. Its not a matter if you can solder to it, its about doing it right and any Engineer who has actually brought products to market has learned the lesson of the need to do things the right way.
