This video walks through raw edge applique using HeatnBond Featherlight, turned edge applique using muslin, and the basic tools for handstitching. We go through the blanket stitch, whip stitch, french knot, couching stitch and the straight stitch.

Instead of muslin for turned applique use a very lightweight fusible interfacing. Sew to fabric with fusible side facing the fabric. When you turn the applique the fusible is on the outside. You can still cut out the center to reduce bulk, but now you just need to iron in place. No glue. No potential mess. 😊

Some of my clients don’t want any plastic or polyester in their quilts or even coasters so muslin is good for those

It’s a joy to watch your videos, I learned something every time. I machine sew but never hand stitch unless I was repairing something. I feel brave enough to try these little birds.

Cannot tell you how much I appreciate this video. You have filled in all of the gaps for me so now I can try appliqué. I am off today sewing coasters and cat mats to sell and I may just finally get creative and add personalized appliqué. I even have all of the bonds and webs, and muslin…. Just never understood how to prep the piece and attach it, using all of the stuff 😅. Just watched a few of your older mug rug videos and your be grateful flower pattern appliqué using freezer paper and washable Elmer’s. Glad you’re still using the glue 7 years later. I do use glue often when binding or hemming. I’m a novice, it just made sense. Think I ran out of pins or didn’t know what basting meant, was probably using the wrong stitch length lol 😂 so I’ve been using glue ever since. Thank you so much! Really enjoying your videos. ❤

The more you learn the simpler each stitch becomes. Crazy patchwork quilts embroidered done on each block is a great way to learn new stitches.

Lisa Lori Holt sells interfacing that's sew in That's really wonderful for turned edged applique. The weight of it is light but has a good body to it I've been using it for a long time and really like it. You can buy it in her fat quarter shop, or on Amazon.

I have pearl cotton thread and DMC thread (think 80’s friendship bracelets, like using a safety pin and twelve strands, no pattern… what we did to keep busy since there were no cellphones). I bought them because they were included on an appliqué list but haven’t learned how to use them, how many threads of each, etc. You have made this so enjoyable I may spend the time to practice. Hand sewing is getting easier as I get older and develop patience, too bad the eyes are going 😊. Thanks again! And yes, the Aurifil is wonderful! My go to was the poly blend from Joanne’s but it breaks sometimes during quilting. Now I use Aurifil for quilting, it’s expensive, but worth it, and lasts a long time! Quilt in a Day has excellent sales on it, and runs great clearance fabric sales. I will warn you though, the Aurifil can be tedious and break while threading my brother cs6000i, maybe because it’s 100% cotton and not a poly blend? Idk. But well worth it. I’ll try Sulky next.

I love hand stitching. But am a very very beginner, but I can see with practice I will get better. Luckily the first project I am currently working on is a primitive design , and so even though it is a large quilt with very large amounts of raw edge wool appliqué, each sewn onto a linen background, then this piece is turn edge appliqué onto another large piece of linen. The second large piece of linen is the actual quilt block. There are multiple appliqués on each piece of small linen , and multiple pieces of the small linen pieces on these large linen blocks. It’s a block of the month thankfully.

Thank You Lisa for this tutorial on stitching and applicating these sweet little birds. I very much enjoyed this showing how to do these stitches. But I'm a bit visually challenged actually I'm legally blind, but have enough straight ahead vision to be able to sew. But have a difficult time seeing some things, so I would have liked to see a close up more of the stitches. While you were sewing them watching I was watching this on RU-vid on the TV, and was a little hard to see actually see the needle placement. I could understand it though because I did do some embroidery in the past before I lost my vision. I used to do Brazilian embroidery. And regular DMC embroidery. But I haven't done it in a really long time so this was like a refresher. I would hope to see more stitches that you're going to be doing in the future because this video was very enjoyable. And more little applicate birds or flowers would be really great to see thanks again.marion bartley

What a darling applique! I am preparing to learn hand quilting. I recently purchased a book on all things needlework.. its actually a needlework encyclopedia! 8:12 if you don't want to turn the beak and you don't want to have raw edges, you could just embroider the triangle. A satin stitch would be nice. 💖🌞🌵😷

I could never get my stitches even so my mother suggested i do a machine stitch with loose tendion that is easy to remove. This works for me. I have done often. I just counted machine stitch to measure length. My nane id Mary from Arkansas

I'm not sure which template, but if you mean 9:20. She's using the pieces with the iron on fusible already attached to the wrong side of the fabric. Most glued won't stick to silicone. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵. Take care of yourself 😷.

Re: French knots. I have had the experience that if you go back down the same hole you came up that the knot has popped through the hole (especially if your needle makes a bigger hole in the fabric). So I always go back down a thread or two next to the spot where I came up. Then there is no possibility of the knot popping through to the back. (Something that is valued when burying a knot in quilting.) 💖🌞🌵😷

I have missed you , my tablet broke and I used my husband lèt me use his tablet . But I had a 🧠 clog. I could not for the life of me. I could not ŕember your last name! I have finally found you again and I am subscribed again! I have been down with a huge hematoma on my knee I has taken since Christmas night to fill back in and grow skin and a scab, I thought it never would heal. But I am back with a new tablet

I am really having difficulty using the 100 wt thread for my turn appliqué which was on supply list for the turn appliqué. It is driving me crazy. I really think it was easy enough to make my stitches invisible with a heavier thread. As a garment sewer who did hand tailoring for years , I used regular sewing thread in my hems and they were invisible. My tailoring teacher in school would simply send you back to do it over if any stitches were visible in our hand tailoring. I have some scraps and will practice turn appliqué with some thread I can see.

Thank you for your tutorial , I love your style of teaching....very patient and clear. I am wondering if the "Blue Birds" piece was all machined stitched ? It looks like you used the blanket hand stitching on the bodies and wings ...but maybe it was a machine stitch?
