Using hand tools seems very meditative, and being in harmony with the wood. I think it is a good idea. Enjoyed the video. Nice guitar. Good luck in the competition.

Hand tools are definitely my meditation! Spending a few quiet hours in the workshop after a day in the office is the best relaxation ever!

It's a nice thing, but these RU-vid videos make it seem nicer than it is. Every little process here too A LOT of hard work, aches and strains - and took a very LONG time. This is beautiful work, but take it from me, it very quickly gets super repetitive, hurts and to do it at this level takes a mind of steel.

Hand tools only builds may take longer but the traditional approach whilst not being viable commercially show true craftsmanship. Absolutely stunning guitar. I am in awe 👏👏

@@rauschguitars I hear ya but it does make you realize why instruments were produced in such small numbers until 30’s CNC may deliver scale & consistency but not much soul or individuality

Last week, for the first time in over 40 builds, I carved a pair of P-90 pockets with a sharp chisel. It was the most satisfying thing I've done in 10 years. Back then I started making templates and using a router for everything.. I'd forgotten how enjoyable it was to slow down and use my God given skills. Watching you work this way takes me back. That is a beautiful guitar, by the way. It even sounds like someone put a lot of effort in to it.

Amazing work ! Very beautiful and inspiring. I'm so used to technology that, before discovering your channel, I couldn't even imagine how it would be to build a whole guitar out of hand tools only. This is really the skill and mastery taken to their limits. And, to me, the outcome is beyond expectations: a unique timber with unique aesthetics. The mids and highs of this guitar will do an outstanding job in a full band mix. Congratulations !

Would you be able to tell me the names of the tools you used? I don't recognize some of them, I'm building a guitar right now but I'm just using glue and chisels, and I'm using my hands as a clamp every time I glue something so I always have to sit there for an hour until it's dry enough to let go lol

At 2:45 you use a hand powered drill press. I've never seen one like this, could you share some more detail about the model? And thanks for sharing your video... my work bench is almost ready now and the hand tools-only approach is also what I'm aiming for.
@rauschguitars
@rauschguitars Год назад
The drill was made by Ixion. I don't have much info on them, except that it's probably from the 40's. They pop up for sale every now and then in Germany and neighbouring countries, but will probably be impossible to find elsewhere. You may get lucky by searching for antique pillar drills, which are similar.

Was there a reason for cutting off the ears of the headstock and then gluing back on?
@rauschguitars
@rauschguitars 3 года назад
Good question! By cutting them off, I have straight sides that I can work on with handplanes without knocking into the headstock. When doing the fretboard I plane down the side a few times, so it's worthwhile for me to chop them off.
