Magdad those channel lock pliers are a hell of a lot better than they were! You have shown me what I can do to make some unique bolts which i will need for my 1920s,1930s and 1960s H.K. Porter #3 and #2 Forrester cutters. Unfortunately I am not a machinist like my dad was when he made tools at the H.K.Porter foundry plant in Somerville43, Mass back in the 1960s. However I do know my dad's rule #1 in the machine shop. If you dont have it or CAN'T get it, MAKE IT! Thanks for showing me the DYI way of making unique bolts!

357 Magdad that was a major improvement in those channel lock pliers! I also wish to thank you for showing me how to do a DYI way of making a unique and unusual bolt. The reason for the thank you was because I have 7 H.K. Porter #2 and #3 Forester loppers that have unique bolts which hold the cutting blades on to the handles. The bolts have about a 5/8" head with a 3/8" shaft which goes down to a 1/4" threaded end for the nut. This type of bolt was used on these cutters from 1920s through at least the 1960s if not longer. The reason I know is because my dad worked at the plant that forged, machined and assembled these cutters in Boston. He was one of the machinists that made the tools. Now you have showed me how a non machinist can keep his dad's tools still working for another 100 years. I have 17 tools from that plant that span my dads life. He was born in 1912 and passed in 1979. The tools from that plant are from 1916 to 1985. I guess I'm a little fond of tools made at that plant! Thanks again.

Awesome restoration. You took a good tool that was misused and nearly gone and gave it a new life. The bolt in the drill press idea was brilliant. I have had a few old pliers and a slip jaw or two that have stripped or unusable pivot bolts and I am going to take your process and try it. I was collecting pliers just to try to salvage the pivot bolt for a nicer tool but very few are interchangeable.

Always love how you can stretch your own tool shop with creativity and elbow grease to do things like you did on your drill press this time around. Nice job on the hairy-locks; this was a great example of how sanding all the rust damage would leave you with no-tool left. Instead, you stopped at the right point and yielded the tool newly functional. Nicely done!

Now that was a fun one! I knew others would like to see the Instagram stuff too. If you are only ever gonna dip tool handles in the plasti-cote, you could immerse something on the sides to displace some of the dip and raise the fill level. I have also used heat shrink tubing to cover bare metal handles. It works pretty well, and the heat shrink tubing at harbor freight is inexpensive. If it starts to tear or look bad after a few years, you can just put on a new set.

According to Michael Cthulu you used a vertical lathe. Seriously that was some great work making the new pivot pin. I have a weird preference for keeping all the scarring and pitting on old tools after getting rid of rust, filth, and anything impeding functionality so the finish on that one is rather appealing. You went maybe 2 steps farther than I would have, but some of the hard life on it is still visible.

Most of the items I clean up get the minimum to retain their scars and "patina" for resale on ebay. The items I choose to take "over the top" end up on RU-vid.

What a challenge indeed. Looks like a great useable tool now! I got your sticker in yesterday, thank you so much. It is in my living room now so I can look at it a lot. I'm definitely going to send you a picture when it finds a nice permanent spot. How did you do the 299 Stanley? I have one waiting.

Glad the sticker made it to you! The 299 was in rough shape. I started with a file to get the bad gouges out, then I used wet/dry sandpaper with water from about 120 grit down to 1500. And of course I polished it with Flitz!

looks great! what kind of belt sander have you got?
@357magdad

Mine is a WEN. I think all of the cheap 1 x 30 belt sanders are very similar. Mine also has the 5" disc sander, but I don't use it much.

How tough is that plastidip?

Thanks for watching! I dipped a pair of needle nose pliers that get a good amount of use in my shop. So far the plastidip is holding up OK.

I think you better check your RU-vid settings! Some how you watched this video backwards!! The pliers were ruined when I started and now I use them every day! Thanks for watching!
