Disclaimer! A quick heads up regarding tomorrow’s show at Jacktown. The majority of people attending have already been vaccinated and many will not be wearing masks. If that in any way triggers you please wait until next week when the mask mandates are lifted because then the virus won’t be contagious, this week it might still be but next week you’re golden. 😃👍
I see where you stand on the virus we're on the same page. here in Michigan you have to wear your mask when you order your food at Culver's. the workers behind plexiglass and also wears a mask. Then we get to our table and take our Mask off. then the same worker that took my order behind the plexiglass with both of us wearing a mask brings me my food wearing a mask with us not wearing a mask and no plexiglass but magically she's safe 🤪🤪🤪. Have a Jesus filled day everyone Greg in Michigan. PS I'd sure like to come to the show but it's about 800 miles for me.
Very much appreciated. I recently found a pair of Channel Lock 420’s hiding inside a trash haul tool chest. They’re in rough shape with remains of fiber-fix tape and light blue electrical tape on the handles. I was going to strip and then Plasti-Dip the handles until I saw your video. Now, I’m going to restore my 420 and keep the handles stock (bare). Thanks.
Hey SC.👋😃; I had to buy my 1st tool in 1970. I was 16, riding my bicycle in Indianapolis home from work. I got my flaired jean leg bottom caught & jammed in my chain. I had to cut myself free. There was a hardware store close by. I went in & bought a pair of channellocks to free up the chain. And then readjusted the tension & rode home. I then bought one of those little leather tool bags for behind the seat to carry them in with a patch kit & other tools for repairs. STILL got-em! Went & found-em. Gonna give-em a clean & polish & keep-em in Grandpas tool box in truck. 👍😋
That PVC material is awesome. I use a lot of that and HDPE for projects. My wife and I own a dog boarding kennel, and I use both PVC and HDPE in the dog runs. Urine and feces does a number on wood and metals very quickly, but this stuff is basically impervious to everything. Just hose it down with some soap and bleach,it’s as good as new! It also machines very well. I use it in my CNC router all of the time!
Very nice of you to raffle off the pliers. They look great ! Went fishing in western Jersey today and your right the air feels better in the woods. Thanks
Hi John! What a beautiful place you have upstate. I was in Cooperstown 2012 for a week watching my boy play ball there.. and I bet I put 400 miles in the car.. beautiful! Yall have fun tomorrow I cant wait to see what I am missing.. thank ya Vic
Scout, I can't believe it! I was just downstairs going through some of my dad's old tools and I found an old pair of 420's! I was just thinking how it would be great to restore them. I come upstairs and there you are, Johnny on the spot! Perfect timing.
Great video. BTW John I was watching the Blues Brothers and I realized the the character Sister Mary Stigmata had to be the nun that trained our nun Sister Mary Numchuk 😛😜
Just paradise upstate the things dreams are made of I was really impressed with the pvc no tear out clean holes 🕳 Looks like great stuff it’s amazing how much people throw away I love the 420s I have three pairs I also have some new ones But I always go back to the old ones ha ha great video enjoy The weekend everyone can’t wait to see the footage god bless take care Big love from New Zealand 🗽🇺🇸🙏🇳🇿
We have been BLESSED with a good life and another week. I can't hold a phone and take anything. It's all I can do to get a flip phone open. Arthur is not nice. Happy Jacktown and Upstate. We got a slow rain and everything greened UP! So pretty. Have a wonderful weekend and GBWYou and the GF!
I recently used PVC boards to trim out our basement. Its a bit more expensive but you don't have to worry about water damage again. Those teeth are impressive especially when you consider how many nuts or pipes that pair of channellocks has chewed up and spit out over the years 😂
I live in the foothills in ca. I have redwoods , willows and others. I also cut an acre of grass every week . My favorite relaxing time is under a huge fruitless mulberry in my backyard. The breeze this afternoon was wonderful.
There was that much scrap from trimming out some windows?!?! Man I’d be firing some folks over that! Ridiculous! I’m glad you took a bunch home to use. The Channellocks turned out nice.
David- I think the trim was 4" and the boards come in 7" widths... So instead of ordering special they took the 7" and ripped them down. Crazy right? =D
Hi John, One thing that I love in the old tools is the engraving letters instead of the laser letters on today tools. I think that guys like you John after 100 years that are going to restore some of the todays tools they will have any evidence of model or part number.
That kind of plastic is in use to make kitchen countertops and replace granite and marble quite well because whenever you spilled something it not apsorb but granite and marble do... Nice chanel lock, old but still very good design...I have chanel lock and knipex that have smooth adjustment and always prefer sturdy Chanel lock over them when I applied full force to something...
Thanks for your Videos. I really appreciate how you want your videos to be calming they really are. I have a lot of stress right now my Step-father just died and now my mother has to be in a care factuality and I just wanted you to know that I am grateful for these great videos of yours. I can always count on my buddy "ScoutCrafter" to give me something to think about!
I just went through a similar ordeal with my mother after being her caregiver for years. I just want you to know you are not alone. Going through it even harder here in MPLS as so many businesses are shut down from the rioting and looting. many are never coming back............... It looks like something out of one of those old apocalyptic zombie movies only in real life! That's why we need the serenity of ScoutCrafter in our lives. You have no idea how much I look forward to his videos. It reminds me of the enthusiasm I used to have for getting my wood and popular mechanics magazines in the mail!
Hi Jim- Life is always throwing us a fastball now and then and I know how tough and stressful it can be. I spent 4 years taking care of my sick Mother before she passed... I was so stressed out. I can promise you that all this will work out eventually and you will get back to normal. This past year has really difficult on so many people and just when things are supposed to get better we are hit with more crap! Hang in there Jim, we will all pull out of this soon!!!
There’s a big “no mow” movement with a lot of ground swell in the UK. Basically, you only cut the lawn twice a year. It helps out bees, who are having a tough time of it. It also helps with the rare meadow flowers that are under threat. Would you ever consider something like that?
Yes! However my lawn would be a foot tall in a month and no way my mower could cut that! I am thinking of leaving a section of wildflowers for them!!!!!
I have one like that, got it from my grandmother (!) when she died. Women can also own tools, when I did some job for her I used her own pliers. In Holland we call it a waterpomptang, waterpump pliers.
I used to love making pictures, but when the phone cameras came around... As everything with the phones I'm "not good" at it. I'm looking forward to your Monday report on the Jacktown show a lot!!!!!!!!! I'd come if I could. There are people lucky enough to be able to join and even go home with one of your channelocks, just amazing. I hope you'll have a great weekend!!
Hey Scout! Beautiful property. Awesome job on the Channellocks. Just bought the 426 tongue and groove pliers. Haven’t bought Channellock in many years. Really disappointed in the quality and sharp edges that feel like they can cut. Don’t see any American pride in these. Might have to do a Scoutcrafter to them and soften those edges.
Hi Stan- I believe the fit and finish issues are their attempt to compete with foreign imports... Channellocks are very competitively priced and corners have to be cut somewhere. A little finish work on them at home makes a fine tool at a low price! =D
Man upstate is a paradise. I could lay on the grass and stare at the sky for hours and get lost. Everyone have a great weekend and meet up. Be safe out there 🐱👍
That plastic trim is great for the first couple years but here in the northwest it grows an algae that sits in the pores and never quite washes out. When you pressure wash, the pores get bigger. You just have to live with a light green tint if you don't want to rinse your trim away
Hi Jean-Paul! Thanks for letting us know... I wonder if a sealer of some sort would help that. Maybe a paint type... It should be more stable then wood I guess... Thanks again!
Project idea for the PVC planking : a bird feeder that will last for 25 years. I still have my first pair of 420s I got when i was an apprentice plumber 31 years ago. I have never broken a pair. I have broken several other brands but never Channelocks. ( I do have a couple pair with arc marks poorly run electrical in plumbing spaces)
Great video as always. Something else I gotta look for at the flea market! Lol I have been an electrician for thirty years and have always used Channel Lock pliers. Any other brand just doesnt compare. I have never used any of the foreign brands though. I have also seen a big change in the quality of them over the years.
My 420's are very close to when yours were made. The date code is "AC." Mine were handed down in the family. There is no blue on the handles. And there is the light overbite that you mentioned.
Your girlfriend made the right decision to go with the composite decking. Much better than wood, and essentially maintenance free. Some home DIY projects are fun, but not sanding down, refinishing, replacing wooden decking every five years. I'm glad you have a simple way to dispose of and mulch grass clippings. In the city they are hard to mulch, require too much time and attention to deal with, and smell. My success at mulching has been limited. Plus, a lot of homeowners dont have the space.I'm happy to let the city composter do it. Thanks for the nice Channelock cleanup. I have a number of CL tools and they have served me well. Top quality US tools. I always wondered why they didn't flare out the ends of the handles to avoid the pinch. Regards
Hi Pat- I too have to toss my grass clippings in the trash here in the city, no place to store it... Funny thing about the Channellocks is I never got picked by one... I often wonder how they get that reputation.
I bought a few pair of knipex I love the head design but the week point is the push button I still prefer channellock over them I just soften the edges on them
I would have absolutely took every last bit of that PVC trim I could fit in my vehicle. Material like that can come in handy for so many different projects..........When you say the oxygen level is higher, there's a lot going on in nature that makes people feel better, the soil bacteria M. Vaccae is one that's known but I suspect there is multitudes in nature going on that we still don't understand.
Your leaves upstate look 3 to 4 weeks behind ours in West Virginia; pollen has come and thankfully now gone. I’ll have to make do with local fleamarkets for practice tools, and after seeing the job on the Channellocks mine need to be revisited as my early attempt is sad. Enjoy the show, it will be interesting to see what you return with.
In Florida I’ve found that the plastic decking fades and quickly gets a powdery surface. There is no way to fix it. You can’t sand it or treat it with preservative. After 2 years, it’s done.
you know it would be cool to see your mower & a tour of your garden shed upstate there! sorry I can't be at the meetup in Jacktown, you're on the wrong side of the planet to me :P
Plastic wood, as they call it, is great stuff. I use it for outdoor trim, especially where it gets close to the ground. Make sure you wear a dust mask while cutting it though.
Loctite PL Glue & Brads, plus that plastic trim, will make the best Bird & Duck Houses! Johnny Appleseed planted Apple Seeds, and you can become a legend by planting Animal Houses (pun) for non-college bound wild birds, etc.. A Bat House on your land would be awesome!
So I do solar cleaning and occasionally we put in windows in the off season also I live in California but we use this pressed board for trim out here it gets hot enough to warp the pvc stuff but we have to caulk the board and paint after installing it also we pressure washed a deck made with the prototype for the composite type stuff and also it is the only original composite deck left in the US and it is in awesome shape
PVC vs Wood: PVC will expands/contracts in all directions while wood only expands/contracts across the grain. PVC also expands more than wood - need to allow for this and use fasteners that will give a little and allow the PVC to expand over its length. I replaced my garage door trim with PVC about ten years ago and it took care of the rot problem. Someone asked about machining PVC vs Delrin. PVC has more grain than Derlin - Delrin has a more consistent structure than PVC. Still can easily mill PVC just like wood.
Beautiful property you have upstate and great job on those channel lock pliers I wish I could make Jacktown but unfortunately my car lease is coming near an end and I have to go car shopping you know how that goes it has to be on a Saturday for me because of my job and it’s something that you can’t do on a Sunday so maybe next time I’ll try to come I would really like to meet you.
@@ScoutCrafter aw man hopefully I catch you next year. I made out ike a bandit! I bought two plumb axe one of which is in perfect condition. (I don't know how the old guys didn't get to it first!)
Nice grab on that what I like to call Plood stuff, question now on that you think maybe use a fine tooth blade make a finer cut and what about drill bits any specific type work best do they make a set for the new Plood composite stuff?
Hello Mohamed! You are right the fine tooth carbide bits leave a much better finish and as far as drill bits I was using 118 degree bits and worked great however I can see 135 bits also working well and maybe faster. The stuff really is fun to work with! =D
Sorry but ALL my channelocks are now collecting dust and i own quite a few. Knipex are more ergonomic better steel and definitely more finesse. I bought 1 pair knipex to try them out and now own twenty something pairs various styles. Channelocks are good quality not knocking them. Thats s nice piece of property you got there 🙂
I have a couple pair of Knipex and love the quality... Pro's really like them as working with the tool everyday makes you appreciate every little feature... =D
We have been using Azek pvc trim for years, never paint the back of wood, wood needs to breathe, my opinion so we never do, when are you breaking ground on the house upstate?
Hi Tom- The problem with wood is it absorbs moisture, if painted only on one side the wood will move and check the paint. When all the sides and ends of wood that is outside is sealed the wood lasts much longer... (Oil based paint not latex) =D No house on that property upstate! =D
