Omg. I didn’t know this anthem could get any better but the heavy presence of the organ growling in the background is just breathtaking. So much drama, so much anticipation for the choir!
I had no idea that this recording existed! I thought they didn't want anyone listening in to this in public houses while drinking beer and wearing flat caps - but here I am, eighty-four years later, listening in while having a nice cup of hot tea ☕ in my pyjamas, morning gown and slippers. God save the King!
It must have been quite a "radical" step for its time, much like the introduction of live television cameras in 1953. At the previous Coronation in 1911, they (apparently) didn't even allow photography (except for a handful of fotos by Sir Benjamin Stone during the communion service when nothing important or interesting was happening). It's a shame really, they could've easily put up a grammophone and recorded at least some of the music. So that's the best we've got, glad you enjoyed it.
Almost the entire service was recorded by the BBC and released on an HMV 78 rpm set of (I think) 12 discs. It’s In better sound than presented here. This transfer is bad. Ward Marsten did a superb transfer on CD.
I wonder if either Zadok or Nathan could ever have imagined the invocation of their names in quite such a powerful way as Handel allows and demonstrates so magnificently here - some several Millenia later…. on a little Northern European island. It’s a funny old 🌎 but beauty is everywhere. 🙏 No other ceremony on earth comes close to this. Largely made up of Victorian bells and whistle theatre but with core elements from the old pre reformation Latin high church coronation mass translated to the national language. This then dipped in high church Anglicanism creating a melting pot of mystery. Legitimised by history Echoing down the ages in a building used for the same ceremony near enough as in 1066 AD. unequalled unrivalled unsurpassed …..anywhere in the world. Thank you for posting
It is Amazing how 300 years Later Handel is still Blessing us with His Immortal Music !!!...I am Inclined to agree with Beethoven ( And I think I'm In pretty good company ! ) That Handel was the Greatest Composer who ever Lived !!!...
Probably because they feared that the people may be mad as they would be spending alot as the country recovers from the Pandemic, which disappointed the ones who actually want the coronation to remain traditional, which is most of the public just to satisfy the minority
The coronation this year was a joke and an insult to God and the Christian faith. I can hardly believe that they put a Crown on that woman’s head and call her a Queen, thankfully no one bowed to her. A woke diverse coronation that made little sense and did not even highlight the nobility which after all it is a celebration of the Royal power but they don’t highlight it.
I hope they make it a bit more majestic looking for William & Catherine. Charlie's coronation wasn't bad, just a few tweaks could help immensely. The soldiers flanking the entire procession into the abbey beside the Queen in 1953 was so so cool looking, no other way to put it 😅 Bring a bit of that back and it will be perfect
@@Zadir09 I doubt it though. Unless we are an immensily rich country. People will always complain about the spend. And the need for monarchy in 21st C. I just think if a job's worth doing it's worth doing properly.
The organ is there in full splendour in the background; I suspect the microphones were positioned to pick up the choir and orchestra rather than be drowned out by 32’ pedal reeds.
Bravo. It’s a rendition way better than Charles III’s one in 2023 It could have been a full scale coronation or a simple form of proclamation as Fredrik X ascended the throne. Sth. in the middle is really a bad idea
There was no chance Westminster Abbey would have agreed to close in moths to build chambers, galleries and let 8000 people sit on scaffolding…. The fire and rescue authorities may have signed it off in 1937 and 1953, but there was no chance on earth that would be approved in 2023….. We should be happy that there still was a coronation at all
Where does it say "George V"? The title of the video is Handel: Zadok the Priest - 1937 Coronation. My account name is George V. Maybe you mistook my account name for the video title.
@@georgev9170 Yes, I was confused by your account name. I get that the title is Handel: Zadok the Priest, etc. Thank you for clarifying and thank you for posting this historic vignette.
@@tooleyheadbang4239 that may not be scary, although don’t pretend you are not afraid of dying. You’d be lying, even to yourself. Everyone is afraid of dying when comes the time, no matter what or who they believe in. As for flying passengers : suddenly, atheism becomes quite a relative concept, the minute you board a plane … Moreover, every motion picture, every sound (and such) that our technology could immortalize since its origins, changed, disrupted or disturbed our perception and our mind (especially when it comes to people we miss) so that any recording, any movie, can easily provide a sweet illusion of reviving the dead, as long as you wish. Generations to come will have to cope with that adjustment. Closure is becoming a vain wish …

I know this may be blasphemy for both monarchists and republicans, but if the UK ever becomes a republic I hope we keep this tune for the presidential inauguration. It's too precious and powerful to lose.
@@doninicdorai2131 I don't know, but the ones arrested this year weren't going to do any of those. They'd even taken care to liaise with the Met to ascertain where they were permitted to stand and hold their placards. The police apologised afterwards so there's no doubt at all that the protesters were innocent.
Probably none despite people preferring David to Bertie. Anti monarchists at the time understood that after the hell of WW2 the people needed something to be joyful about and a lot of people really like the royals. Protesting used to mean something different about 8 years ago, now physical acts of violence are an acceptable part of “protest”. I think things should be looked into because there should absolutely be a right to protest the monarchy or anything else. Just the fact that the King and the next 4 in line to the throne were traveling so close together. An assassination or anything happening to them ALL would probably devastate many people and would throw the government into absolute insanity for a long while. I don’t think that would be good. So as long as they don’t try and get the RF I think they shouldn’t be held. But I absolutely believe that many of them if given the chance would give them the Romanov treatment. It sucks to be security
Despite Charles III Coronation being a historical moment, his whole procession seems bland and making it like an Oscar Ceremony instead of a sacred Christian ceremony, especially the unenthusiastic Zadok the Priest choir. His mother's and grandfather's coronation is 1000% better and grander than the 2023 "simplification".

@@georgev9170 ‘My Lord Archbishop, what a scold you are! And when your man is down, how bold you are! Of Christian charity how scant you are! And, auld Lang swine, how full of cant you are!’ To my mind, he's always been the Anglican equivalent of Joe Kennedy.
If you remember him, you’re not a kid. People dislike him because of the Abdication of Edward VIII. That little verse is about that. But this is ridiculous. Edward and Wallis Simpson would have been a disaster, especially during the War. And George VI and Elizabeth did very well-and gave us their daughter, Elizabeth II. So quit complaining.
You have no understanding of Monarchy. The Sovereign isn’t better than anyone. They are to serve the people, the king reigns by advice and consent of an elected parliament. The king is tasked with safeguarding his people and ensuring the functions of the state run smoothly and alert their ministers if they spot an issue. Again the King isn’t “better”, if he was he’d RULE instead of REIGN. Pray to the holy spirit if you’re a Christian and you will receive the exact same blessing the King did.
Problem, Solomon failed God, this Anthem is predictive of a failed Monarchy beginning towards the end of Queen Elizabeth's ll's reign ( we now see a Catholic Prime Minister) and into Prince Charles reign as King..... Solomon fell into idolatry due to he taking interest in his wives gods, Prince Charles has always been interested in the mystics and occult. Pope and Catholics must be really laughing when they observe all the Church of England's weaknesses however, The Queen is much more tolerant and welcoming of other Faiths than they. Prince Charles, forget it.
What a nutter, this anthem has been used since George II and none of them has failed or led a decline in the monarchy, besides it wasn't salomon who was a shit king in the bible lol
