Most of the shots that were evaded seemed to have the body moving out of the fire line before he attempted to take control of the weapon. For the shots that hit him, it seems that he tried reaching for the weapon before he attempted to move out of the fire line. Which left the body exposed when reaching for the weapon and the shot broke. Food for thought I guess

daniel18779 Which is lacking on some of the gun to head attempts, looks like the technique is a bit off. There's almost no downward head movement on the overhead disarms. All in all, very nice video.
@GunShocka
@GunShocka 6 лет назад
ewertsp it would actually be safer to mover your head to the side your gonna grab the gun from since crouching down isn’t as fast as moving to the side. Also your head is an oval. Moving down would just potentially make him shoot you in the dome. Moving your neck along with your torso allows for much faster and fluent movement. But ya I like that they did multiple tests but that’s what you learn. He did seem to focus on the disarm instead of safety in some attempts.
@ewertsp
@ewertsp 6 лет назад
GunShocka idk man, in most of the attempts they focused alot in the getting out the line of fire with body and grab, the disarm came later. On the head to side, you see the grab, slight side move and much later the hit to the wrist comes. The move I train does all of that at the same time, feels much faster. On the overhead he grabs gun and wrist. I train 2 hands on the gun and 1 hand grips the back of the slide on the way down to disarm. On the gun to chest the difference is even bigger. It looks like the gun to the back defense, body rotation to get out of line of fire and grab, all the power from the hips, like punching.
@GunShocka
@GunShocka 6 лет назад
ewertsp very true but though I do know physical frets is different from person to person and how their body is built. I’m really tall so ducking is a longer action for me but even so ducking just seems slow to me if your standing and the muscles in your legs are positions to push your weight laterally already. To me though it seems (visually at least) that the actual action of getting out of line of fire is with your back turned however the actual disarming can go a lot of ways. I mean the other person could just back up.

Hero's know what they are putting at risk. Also these men are fully aware that this scenario is training for this exact situation and that means the shooter will be shooting much faster and with much more situational awareness, had this been a real life situation the risk of getting hit would lie almost completely in the technique and and hand eye coordination and not as much in the time it takes to do so; with that said you obviously would want to be reacting as fast or faster in any situation while taking these risks.

A few things we must keep in mind: 1) These guys are highly trained special forces operatives. 2) The man with the gun knows what the defender is going to do, and is anticipating the disarm. These don't take away from the fact that attempting a disarm is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and it's better to give up property then to attempt one in a robbery scenario.

I do agree, I do agree. This is why I feel like Dale’s training program is legit and is applicable to a good extent. Dale’s advice is the last line of resort and most attackers or robbers are not highly trained. Dale trains you to remain calm and teach you techniques when there is nothing you can do, and when there is nothing you can do, most likely your attacker is not anticipating what you are about to do. So that’s why I believe Dale is legit and his advice and training is applicable to a very good extent

@the_guy9946
@the_guy9946 6 лет назад
Yeah thats why i dont think this is an accurate test there are real life disarms that happen in stressful situations and thats why it works because the criminal usually isnt very calm either so part of the technique is knowing if you have the correct timing if they are staring you in the eyes and waiting for a disarm you shouldn’t attempt it but if they keep waving the gun everywhere and making demands and shifting their eyes then go for it.
@sergeantassassin3425
@sergeantassassin3425 6 лет назад
Honestly, this is the practical approach to take when concerning a disarm: ALWAYS assume they know it's coming, and are preparing the best they can for it. Obviously this doesn't work if they're too far away. At that point, disarming is impossible, so you'll have to try something else. Talking usually helps, and making a lot of noise usually makes the mugger nervous, jumpy, anxious, wanting to hurry up and get the hell out of there before any number of smartphones captures his face on digital media. If you can get him to come closer to you, the better. Establish that you're not a threat, but you're not a pushover either. They're less likely to shoot you if they still think they can get what they want without a scuffle.
@neurofiedyamato8763
@neurofiedyamato8763 6 лет назад
It doesn't hurt stacking the odds against the good guy. You do want a safety margin before risking your life. This test is slightly stacked against the defender where as in real life, the mugger wouldn't have spec ops reaction. They wouldn't be focused and wouldn't be anticipating the disarm. However doing a test like this gives additional safety margin because it is more difficult than real life. However I would also say in real life, the defender isn't going to be spec ops trained and would also be equally as nervous as the attacker. So the error of this test isn't entirely that off. I would recommend doing a lot more tests with various individual of differing background and training multiple times for a more accurate test result.

This reminds me from training that in close quarters, an attack involving a gun is much easier to evade and defend against than a knife. You need to get off the line of attack from the gun fast while manipulating the shooter's hand and forearm so he can't track you with the muzzle. Knives are much more dangerous to defend yourself against because they can kill from multiple angles and directions of attack, a gun cannot... Many people also think that these scenarios are unrealistic because they assume the attacker wielding the gun would be further away, when in reality, it depends on what the shooter is after. If they want to kill you, they'll just shoot you. When they want something from you, be it money, your ID, car keys, you name it, the gun is no longer a viewed by the attacker as a weapon but more a symbol of power that they use to get what they want. This is the primary reason why the attacker is going to be in your face and not ten feet away pointing the gun at you. This video is also accurate in explaining why your hand should be on the slide of the gun. In addition to holding the muzzle away from your body, it's not going to cycle properly and after the first shot and it won't work until the slide is racked.

When having the gun pointed at your head it makessense to move your head out of the way (Either down or sideways) at the same time as grabbing the gun. That is why the fail rate was high. Other than that, it's a really good demonstration of the reality of this sort of situation. If you are not willing to sacrifice it all, then be prepared to loose it all.

I am not an expert on disarms, but this video provides a lot of information and allows me to critically question my learned techniques, which everyone should always do. Great job on the video, kudos to you guys for making this. Her are things I noticed, things I learned, and concerns I have after watching this. The consistent thing I noticed on the successful disarms is it seems the victim moves offline, FIRST. He fails when his hands move first or even in unison with his body. It makes sense. Your hands are up by the gun, so the attacker will be watching them. One note that affects this test, the attacker knows that his victim is going to try and disarm him. This gives the attacker an even greater advantage while at the same time taking away the victim's advantage of the element of surprise. Another detail to keep in mind is, it's best to attempt the disarm when the attacker tells you to move or do something. Let the attacker know that you will comply with his command. Since the attacker is expecting you to move, his reaction time will be significantly slower. This is because his brain must now process your movement; it will no longer be an instinctual reflex to pull the trigger. Also, as an expert in biomechanics and neurology, techniques with only a simple twist of the body will be slower than allowing the rear foot to move creating a slight pivot on the front foot. A simple twist creates counter tension/torque, while the pivot allows free motion, thus greater speed. I am now learning Krav Maga and their techniques. The victims trigger response position in Krav Maga of bring your hands up close to the gun concerns me. My concern is that this movement in and by itself may cause a trigger pull reflex by the assailant, getting you instantly shot, or in the best-case scenario causing the assailant to back up or reposition the firearm. Maybe the KM trigger response should not be a trigger response, but more of a thoughtful timed or gradual response? Is the trigger response just an early training technique that gets tweaked later as the student ranks in the system? Any thoughts on this? It will help my training.

Thank you for the interesting video! Folks, other factors to also consider: 1. Use of the lever arm of the attacker to protect his weapon & manipulate the victim. 2. The capacity of the attacker to withdraw his armed hand in terms of distance in disarming attempt. 3. The position, for instance, angle the gun in held at i.e pistol grip facing ground or more laterally. Or even the hieght from which the gun is held at to the head. 4. Motion! The hand and body of attacker may be in motion. Good to practice as many scenarios. Cheers!

Real combat is not turn-based. And it takes much less time to move one trigger finger than half your body. You might succeed with surprise and a little luck, better than standing there and getting shot if submitting your cash/wallet isn't enough. But Bruce Lee died from a bullet and I doubt very many spec ops "veterans" escaped harm after allowing themselves to be caught in this sort of situation.

What sets the third situation apart from the rest is the fact he is unable to perform a disarm without first getting out of the line of fire. Ergo by the time he goes for the disarm proper, he's already out of the way, so even if he fails to disable the gun in time, he won't get hit.

@howardbaxter2514
@howardbaxter2514 6 лет назад
It would probably be similar considering the way he moved his body, the line of fire was almost completely “behind” him (in terms of the 90 degree term). If anything, you might get hit, but it would likely not be fatal because it would be shot late and only hitting your back and under your arm.
@Zappina
@Zappina 6 лет назад
Bill Randall No, actually the whole situation was unrealistic. Only inexperienced criminals point a weapon so close to your body. Also when adrenaline runs through your system, its much less time need to make a decision. Its simply instinct to attack or run when attacked. Squeezing a trigger requires much less effort and time than turn around and grab a gun. In any life threatening situation (for you and the attacker both) your first move would force the attacker to pull the trigger immidiately or move backward and defend. The element of surprise is critical to actually do this and works only with people who are overconfident, inexperienced or fooled by you(if you are cooperated before).

So basically, these techniques used in typical CQC unarmed vs handgun tactics tend to work best on a double action pistol. Of course, when you're in a high stress situation and someone points a handgun in your face or at your chest, you probably don't have time to take a good look at the weapon, analyze it and search your memory to determine whether it's a single action or double action pistol. And even if it IS a double action pistol, you're still looking at the chance that you could hesitate a fraction of a second and end up dead. VERY informative. EXCELLENT.

All gun disarms are like aikido demonstrations. They're 100% dependent upon a compliant opponent. Notice the gunman doesn't snatch his hand back, or try to move the gun with the target. The game is "can I move enough before you pull the trigger?" and a requirement is that the gunman doesn't attempt to pull the trigger until he notices the protagonist starts to move.

Evading the shot to the back only worked because the guy with the gun didn't move away when he saw that he was trying something, and stayed still trying to fire before he could grab the gun. Logical people who prioritize distance don't go around mugging and kidnapping people. The gun to the back is an extremely common kidnapping positioning. You are much less likely to survive if you go with the guy than if you fight back. Better to get shot in the 7/11 parking lot where someone will hear the report than to get shot in some cabin in the woods. I'll take my chances in that situation. If he just wants your wallet or phone or something then just hand it over. But if he takes that stuff and then puts the gun back in your face, then again, why die without a fight?

Love it! Similar to the disarms i learnt in Krav Maga. Highlights a lot. Knowing the weapon used against you, understanding of it is single or double action, having a clear mind in the situation to see the action of the firearm and also shows the changes of actually surviving a threat (not high at all)

Christopher Louw i agree, this is incredibly similar to what i learned in krav as well, although with the highline disarm, they redirected the weapon across the body to the right instead of to the left which would be much quicker.

wait, what? You learned disarming techniques in Krav Maga?

I don't know if it was specifically from krav, krav was just the main style we focused on out of that, bjj, and kickboxing.

John Harwick yes there maybe better types of disarms however the main lesson to be learnt from the video is not to get into a "worst case scenario". These guys are military and that is all they do: train, and even they got shot doing a disarm. Disarms are good to learn for "in case you need it" however your training shouldn't put you in that situation

I wholeheartedly agree, its much better to train to avoid dangerous situations than to train to get out of them... though a bit of both is a good idea.

Tried this forever ago back in Nam', took a round to the dome. Now that I've respawned and grown up as a slightly more athletic male, I think I'll give it another go.

So how do we know if it's single or double action ? Is there or are they ways to know ?

There’s actually an extremely good point to be made about the movement at 2:03. The goal is not to take control of the weapon, the goal is to get your ass out of the way. If you’re lucky enough to be swift enough to dodge the round intended for you, then focus on what you need to do from there. Hopefully be it either disarming the attacker as intended, or more preferably, drawing your own weapon.
