I bought this jig and have just received it. I also have the Loose Tenon Jig from 10 Minute Workshop/Peter Millard. I tried both jigs using the same bit, an Amana bit with a 1/4 in shank and 5mm bit. The goal was to use standard Festool Dominoes 5mm thick. The TianLi Jig arrived, and looked great--all anodized, no play in the parts that move, I was expecting the TianLi jig to work well. I tried it out, and found that the holes it made had too much play when inserted the dominoes. I set up Peter Millard's jig with the exact same bit and was able to make snug fitting holes for the Festool dominoes. I think with the TianLi jig, there are too many interfaces between parts of the jig that allow small imperfection to add up and allow the bit to enter the workpiece at some angle off of 90 degrees. That creates a socket for the domino at a non-90 degree angle, and the jig drive the bit into the wood slightly off square, which means the domino is loose, not snug. This jig might work if you custom create your own dominoes specially fit to the size of the whole your bit makes--but don't expect a 5mm or 0.25 inch bit to create a bit exactly that size.

Having on my shop a Lamello, a festool and a Hoffmann dowelling tool, I've found this as a very useful addition to my machines becausee it cando what others can't, like dowelling narrow stock with small pins, or making two or three holes close to each other, etc., so I can say, in spite of the sliding depth stop ( just don't overtighten it! put a small piece of material to fit snugly on front of it) is a very well made jig. I'm happy with it!

Well reviewed tomasz it's a cheap alternative for a DIY er a grub screw in the depth adjuster may work with an Allen key drive so you could tighten it a bit more and maybe a clamping device to hold it steady but a good buy for the amateur

Mine is from a different vendor. Doesn't have the self centering feature. It only took me about an hour to set it up for 6mm loose tenons. The router stays in the jig. By walking it L/R of center a bit, and re-plunging it, you can create loose joints as well. I had to create a jig to trim down the standard 6mm Domino style tenons to 28mm from 38mm. Works well for parallel and L type joints. I don't want to remove the fence (Haven't make a jig to reset that up again) for doing mid panel joints. There's still a place for dowels for those joints.

I do have a nice doweling jig now and I find myself using it far more often than this mortising jig. However I still want to try out the Festool Domino... maybe one day

Nice review mate, however for that price I am glad I got an alternative way to do things at a cost effective weight in my pockets. I have a Triton dowelling jointer, does have some con's to it like all do but when adjusted is a great addition, and will do single or double dowels. You will not be disappointed with it. Used correctly it will make your work easier especially on mitre joints and angles. The biscuit jointer is not defunct, but used to keep timber aligned in glue up when I want specific flat pieces of work such as tables or work tops in a fitting. For a tenon I will use my drill press with mortice attachment and square chisel set to do the mortice hole and band saw to finesse the tenon part... Give a Triton dowel jointer a try out, you don't need dominos in life, dowels are cheaper to purchase and make.

Thank you. Yes I was thinking of getting it actually. As the Festool is way out of my reach, the Triton seemed as a good solution. I actually watched a video that showed that the dowel joint was actually stronger then the loose tenon. But now with this jig I can actually do both, the mortise for loose tenon and accurate holes for dowels. However as I love tools I will probably end up getting the Triton anyway 😂

Bit of sandpaper under the fence to help it grip? Replace the depthstop thumb screw with an allen head screw so you can tighten it up more firmly?

@@CasualDIY Take care not to strip the thread if you tighten it too hard. An alternative (and an improvement for the maker to consider) would be to drill out the thread and fit a stainless steel helicon thread insert which would cope with higher torque without stripping.

I just watched a video where he made a jig to accommodate a ryobi 18v palm router with a 6mm up cut bit and it seemed to drill the holes with more ease than this and no issues BTW this is the second review i’ve seen of this product and yet the product is still out of stock so you can’t even purchase if you wanted to

A half tenon length 'bridge' to fit in front of the depth stop might eliminate the stop problem, and would make accurate repeatability easy, I've imported lots of stuff from North America the hidden costs can eat you up for example (price converted from Can $ to £'s) £185 in the UK (inc shipping) probably plus 6% import duty, 20% VAT and an import clearance fee, so probable total cost around £250, that might be the killer for this jig, at least until the Chinese clone it and sell it for £50 delivered on Banggood ;)

That's the problem with all the tools from abroad. There's so many great brands in the US and some how they are not present here in Europe. And if you wanted to import something, then as you said the taxes will kill it.

Its a great idea, but the cost is a fair bit and pretty much the same as the Triton doweling jointer, which being a self contained unit, doesn't require the additional router so possibly more cost effective for some? Sadly I can't afford either but if I could i'm not sure which way i'd go with that one...lol

Would it not be easier to clamp the jig down? At 5:20 in the video the jig and wood are both pretty close to the end of the bench already, a nice big clamp could perhaps hold down both the jig and the wood to the bench. There's a comment suggesting that you put sandpaper underneath, but I think that could scratch the aluminium over time - a piece of rubber anti-friction cloth (not sure what it's actually called) would be a better bet in my opinion.

I think the clamp would work just fine. As long as you got a bench you can easily clamp it down. As I said after getting used to it it wasn't a big problem. However if I had a cordless router then yes I would just clamp it down.

For this purpose, there is no need to clamp the preparation. It is completely sufficient to stick sandpaper on the bearing surface (then its thickness must be added to the thickness of the material to find the exact center)

Seems like it moved a lot on your work piece from side to side even you pressed quite hard on the jig. Any idea how to prevent that?

Initially yes it did move on me until I got used to it and knew how to hold it. But a simple clamp would do the job. Just clamp the jog to the work piece and you are golden 👍

The fact that you need a specific router and it doesn’t come with the bit means this setup is effectively over $400. Now it has some advantages and disadvantages. If your domino breaks the whole thing is bricked. If your trim router breaks you’re only out 130 for a new router. You can also take out the trim router and use it standalone. It’s also pretty expensive and doesn’t have all the features of the domino and the tolerances and QC might not be up to snuff. Plus the festool patent expires next year 2024 so there might be a Bosch tenon cutter already engineered for all we know. As a hobbyist I’ll wait a year and see. I can cut mortises with a scrap jig and router as it is. And for $400+ I want a Dewalt/Makita/Bosch legit tool, not a small Chinese shop jig.

Really like the review and idea. However, the jig itself is not cheap and more expensive than a (e.g Makita) biscuit joiner. So far, I would do that on a router table or a guide for the handheld router. So the jig is nice, but priced at a point were I would probably either buy a biscuit joiner or the domino. 🙋🏻‍♀️Anna

Yes and that is exactly what I pointed out. If far cheaper then the Domino but still not super cheap for an average DIYer or weekend woodworker. However if you can get it on offer then it could be a solid option.

Yeah, but it isn't fair to compare a floating tenon to a biscuit. Not in the same league. I posted a video that is a closer alternative to this: the Triton doweling joiner. I think Tomasz's review here may have converted me away from the Triton.

I think the real competition isn’t a biscuit joiner but a normal router that you already have and a free ten minute build jig made of scrap. Is it faster than clamping your jig? Yes. But the jig is free, not $400. Unless you already have the two routers it works with and the bit. But it’s till $250 vs a free jig. The domino is a professional tool for people that do it so often the time savings adds up to profit. If you’re a hardcore “woodworking is my only hobby” and you make projects filled with loose tenons then it also makes sense to get a domino. I don’t see a huge market for a knockoff that isn’t exactly like the domino. We already have normal routers with jigs on the low end and dominos on the high end. The middle ground doesn’t make sense to me. Either time is money to you or it’s not. I’d rather a hobbyist buy a quality hand plane than this jig.

It’s not metric, any size tenon, deeper tenons, more bit options, they updated the depth stop, for me better than my domino for those reasons. Never use the angle feature, hate metric bits, hate limited sizes and short tenons, hate the cord and the vacuum hose.

Well as I mentioned in the video you can clamp it down and have no problem with holding this. You would have to be very weak that this would become a major problem.

@@Voxa54 if you are a carpenter and you got a need to make that many slots then a Domino is a way to go as even with the hefty price tag over time it will pay itself off. However if you are a DIYer and don't want to spend so much money on a tool you will use occasionally than I think this is a good choice. And I agree with you after 50 slips with this jig you would be quite tired.
