Handheld Router carving out words & letters using freehand routing techniques.
Using the CNC router bits with reducing collet in a Makita router Im carving out the letters for the 'Luci' piece of fan art I made recently.

I set the depth and lock the router into position. As its only a depth of about 5mm then using the plunge function would be dodgy and far better to tilt the router in an out of the work by lifting the entire unit.
Let the router get up to full speed, then drop it in, it can grab if not fully up to speed. When lifting it out hold it up until the router comes to a full stop before laying it down. Lay it down on its side so it doesnt mark or damage your work. These bits can be v.sharp and pointy so watch catching it with your hands.
Actually moving the router once youve got it in your work is easy enough, the bits are small and running fast enough that you can work in any direction. Pulling the router towards you works well as you can see the line youre following and you have a lot of control over it.
I do it all in one pass rather than multiple shallow passes, going back over your design a 2nd,3rd time increases your chances of going off line and making mistakes. Ive used these bits to a depth of 12mm without problems.
To clear out i did small circular motions using the same bit as they were just that bit too small to use a upwards spiral.

Had my router bits 12 months and just done a couple of pieces and needed a pointer as I wasn't happy with the results (probably to hard on myself) but it's so therapeutic. Cheers for the tips. Hope all's well in bongo land👍🏻

Nice one..I use these cnc bits on all my projects. I did order the wrong size collet first time ,but now iam good to go. The best bit is they are really cheap to buy,but work brill.why pay silly money for a sc 50 when these are just as good...
@thepoultrypeople
@thepoultrypeople 6 лет назад
They are superb, the only ones ive broken are either by dropping the router or hitting a nail, yes they wear a bit but not by that much. Easy to get the sizes wrong, a lot of places call a quarter inch router 6mm which is too sloppy and its the 6.35mm thats the one. Working on anything nice at the moment?

Do you think, with a bit of practice, someone could do this with carbide bits in aluminum stock or plate? Not trying to go very deep at all with each pass. Mainly just concerned about control

Great video, what did you use to stick the paper to the wood?
@thepoultrypeople
@thepoultrypeople 4 года назад
Usually its really cheap PVA glue, from the local ironmongers its £7 for a gallon and its quite thin. I did have a lot of success with spray glue from wilkos but its not that cheap.

@thepoultrypeople

Just updated the description with a link to the base from Clearview, its worth adding something like this to your set up, I was sceptical at first but the extra wide base makes for a more stable carving.
